Ed Foster: 1949-2008

By Jeff Foster, Section The Gripelog
Posted on Mon Jul 28, 2008 at 04:59:24 PM PDT

I'm sorry to inform you all that my dad, Ed Foster, Died on Saturday of an apparent heart attack. He was 59. He was very proud of the work he had done and the community he had built here. He was very engaged in what you all had to say, and we had many running instant message conversations about comments or emails people had sent. He was an extremely smart man, and he loved to be mentally stimulated, whether it was a good book, an interesting conversation, or one of the many comments you posted that made him look at something in a slightly different way. As you can probably tell, I'm not half the writer my dad was, and it's very difficult for me to think of the words to say what I feel(It doesn't help that when I get stuck on a word or phrase, I think "I know, I'll ask my dad!") , but I just want everybody to know that this site and the people on it meant a lot to him. I'm going to miss him. More then words could express, even if he was here to help me think of them.

Services are going to be held on Saturday. For more information, Please email me jeffmfoster@gmail.com.

Jeff,

Please accept my condolences on your loss. I've been reading your dad's material since the late 80's, first in print with InfoWorld magazine, and then the last several years here on the Gripe Log. Your dad has an extended family in the IT world and we will miss him, his wit, his take on industry, and his willingness to help his fellow man through his actions and intervention on our behalf.

May God bless,

RocDoc (Gerry)

Jeff,

Please allow me to add my sympathies and condolences to everyone else's.

As with many other people here, I first became aware of your father through his print work, and followed him here.  While I never met him in person, I considered him an online friend.

Although it's a "natural" part of life, it's never easy to lose your father.  Please know that my sympathies, thoughts, and prayers are with you and your family.

This is extremely sad news, and my deepest and most heartfelt sympathies go out to Ed's family. I always looked forward to Ed's commentaries, as well as the chance to interact with him. His stimulating and provocative points of view were always designed to both make you see, think, and work to simply make things better. He was a real champion of balanced, fair and equitable treatment to all, even when the message might not be popular with some. I will always greatly admire that. May God bless Ed and his family. I will miss him a lot.

My greatest condolences to Ed's family on your loss. My own father passed suddenly three years ago at age 63 so I can identify with your family's loss. I came to Ed's column via the paper version of Infoworld in the mid'90s. I particularly enjoyed his pro-consumer slant of calling the "guilty" parties on the carpet by name. His loss is a great one both for his family and copyright freedoms and consumer rights. Surely right now Ed is in heaven reviewing the fit, finish, software, and power supply to his harp to make sure it does not use DRM to broadcast its songs... econobiker

I couldn't believe that headline when I saw it in my inbox this morning... A true loss to the entire computer industry - and certainly to the consumer. I have read Ed's stories since the early 90's in the print days of Infoworld. I made SURE to never miss his article even if I couldn't read the whole magazine. Still, his articles are the ones I cherish most in my inbox. I truly hope you can carry on what your father has done for us. My condolences to your family and as you can see, the world mourns with you. Don Hancock Alabama Gulf Coast

I've been reading your Dad's columns first in InfoWorld, then here on the gripelog for as long as I can remember. I used to look forward to the print edition of Infoworld, and always immediately flipped to the GripeLine column every week. I agree with others, he helped make the world a better place for the IT consumer. I had the pleasure of a few email exchanges with him where I tipped him to some shady behavior from ReplayTV back in 2003, and more recently with Logitech and the MX620 mouse. He was willing to stand up and fight for the little guy, and we need more people like him.

I'll miss reading his words every day.

Jeff: I am SO sorry to hear of your loss. My father died recently too and I know the waves of grief you must feel.

I've been a huge fan and reader of Ed's column for years. As someone said above he was the conscious of the industry.

Ed actually provided tremdous value to the industry although I doubt that they would admit it. He helped them be better manufacturers and service providers because he challenged them when they didn't do their job for the customers.

I'm sure lots of "real life" friends will show up at the funeral but I want you and your family to know that there are lots of Internet friends that are going to be sending their thoughts and prayers to you and your family.

His column has been a great resource over the years, as well as amusing and a good read. And we all owe him a debt for all his work on blocking UCITA. I too feel like I've lost one of my online friends, even if I only contacted him directly once or twice. Losing someone so young, so suddenly is hard. I couldn't believe the tragic news. I too was a 'distant friend' of Ed's. We had corresponded recently about a published gripe for which I was the unnamed reader whom he quoted in his column. Ed's perceptive insights and principled commentary will be sorely missed. From the beginning, his columns were the voice of Right versus Wrong, and he had a keen eye for the difference. His time came far too early, but his legacy will endure.

Why...[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#72)

Why is Steveanders posting things that are basically just copies of what he's replying to, with his own signature added?

The copies of parent posts are an attempt to look on-topic.

The spam is in his links.

Pointless -- nobody pays any attention to sig links, so without peddling a product in his body text he won't get any sales.

Dear Jeff, Like many others, I have been a long time reader of your Dad's. After these many years, I feel like I know him, and I will miss him, both personally and professionally. I recently loss a close friend, same age, to a heart attack, and I know the shock you must feel. Please accept my deepest sympathies and know that your Dad did a great deal of good in this world. My thoughts are with you. Sincerely, Dan Cullen

Heartfelt Sympathies[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#73)

Having just found out about your father's passing I had to do a double check to make sure I was interpreting the news correctly. I don't read as much tech news as I used to, but always looked forward to your father's columns because he managed to keep his finger on the pulse of what was important to so many of us, and through his efforts I was able to avoid many of the pitfalls of the IT industry. My condolences also to all of US as we have truly lost a champion and voice of how things really should work in this business. I always enjoyed Ed's wit and ability to get to the root of the issue (and often even get it resolved) and have been a fan for years. My sympathies to you and the Foster family. Rest assured your father's life and work touched more people than we will likely ever realize. You will not be the only one who finds himself/herself asking "What would Ed say about this?".

Steve in Omaha
