The Worst Vendor Poll

By Ed Foster, Section The Gripelog
Posted on Tue Jan 01, 2008 at 11:02:42 PM PDT

Yes, it's time to make up your mind and cast your vote. And it's going to be really hard to choose, because there are so many worthy candidates. But a breathless nation awaits your verdict, so I know I can count on all of you to do your duty by voting in the GripeLog Worst Vendor of 2007 poll.

If you think voters in Iowa and New Hampshire are going to have a lengthy ballot to consider, this year I couldn't pare down the list of Worst Vendor candidates to less than 25. And even then I know I'm going to hear legit complaints about some of the companies I chose to leave off the ballot. But, hey, at least I can honestly say I consider every one of these 25 names to be viable candidates deserving of your consideration for this much uncoveted title.

So how do you decide which company was the Worst Vendor of 2007? If you're one of those conscientious types who likes to study up on the details of each candidate's positions, take a look at my overview of notable 2007 gripes to help with your research. But you can also just go with your gut - in other words, the name on our list that gives you the yuckiest feeling in the pit of the stomach is probably the best choice.

As always with my GripeLog polls, the vote tally itself will be interesting, but it's the comments readers post to drum up support for their favorite will likely be even more illuminsating. This is one vote where electioneering in the polling place is definitely allowed. So find the Worst Vendor of 2007 poll on the right-hand side of this page to cast your vote and see how others are voting. Then post your comments below or write me at Foster@gripe2ed.com and tell us why you voted the way you did or which vendor that wasn't on our ballot was nonetheless your Worst Vendor of 2007.

Glad I'm anonyous cause I voted "Apple"[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#1)
by Anonymous User on Wed Jan 02, 2008 at 08:31:53 AM PDT

I've had trouble with many companies in the poll, but only with Apple in 2007. Reasons:

1. "Mighty Mouse" that stops working on a regular basis due to poor design of scroll ball.

2. Late OS upgrade (Leopard) that is very buggy, perhaps more so than Vista?

3. iWork '08 (actually a very late '07) officially replaces the now discontinued Appleworks, but still doesn't have drawing or database programs and  is still missing an equation editor.

4. iLife '08 (actually a very late '07) replaces iMovie with a dumbed-down replacement, forcing upgrade to Final Cut.

I know it's been popular to bash Leopard for being buggy but I honestly haven't had many problems with it. That said, I should admit that after hearing all the problem reports I waited for 10.5.1 and then did a hard drive clone, clean install, and user migration rather than an upgrade in place.

As for the missing database and drawing programs, I agree - but as for "dumbing down" iMovie, that's kind of the point of iMovie - it's an introductory program, not a professional tool. For $80, you get iPhoto, iDVD, Garageband and iMovie.

Complaining that iMovie isn't as good as the $300 Final Cut is just ridiculous.

Leopard Bugs and iMovie[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#37)

Disagree on #2. It was late, not as late as Vista (by YEARS not that late). I've yet to encounter show stopping bugs (Spaces needs work, but I still use it). On the other hand, Vista may have actually shipped with fewer bugs -- everything I've seen on it indicates it's the actual working functions that are so annoying as to be considered bugs. So I guess it's up to your definition of bug. For #4 Apple offers a free download of iMovie HD 6, the iMovie from iLife '06. I fail to see a valid complaint here. http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovieHD6.html

Three Macs[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#58)
by Anonymous User on Wed Jan 16, 2008 at 11:02:57 AM PDT

Assuming you are addressing me, the first poster.

1. The iMacs came with that not-so-mighty mouse. I was forced to pay for it.

2. I never said "graphing utility", I said "drawing". Appleworks had it. I now use EazyDraw, but had to purchase it separately. I was first turned on to the Mac in 1984 because of the MacDraw program.

3. iMovie '06, while still available is no longer supported AFAIK. It is an abandoned product, like Appleworks. If you rely on it, you might find it doesn't work in OS 10.6.

And as far as your insults are concerned, that's just why I'm glad I post anonymously for protection from people that worship Apple and think they can do no wrong. I noticed in the polling that Apple is only one percentage short of that demon Dell! I know I'm not alone.

It was a tough call...[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#2)
by Anonymous User on Wed Jan 02, 2008 at 10:20:36 AM PDT

...but in the end, I chose Palm.

Symantec, Sony, and Comcast were all worthy contenders for the title, and Intuit could certainly win a "Lifetime Achievement Award", but, as someone who has had both a Treo 650p and a 700p, I have seen how pathetic Palm has been at customer relations, only finally opening up when the floodgates of upset consumers reached a breaking point. They have also failed to accelerate software development as needed (rhetorical question --How long has PalmOS been around in its present-day format again?), causing them to lag further and further behind their competitors, and unless they can pull a magic rabbit out of their hat, and actually provide a far better customer experience than they currently do, I believe their assets will be bought out in the next 1-2 years.

Note: Unlike many other companies, I don't attribute this to malice; I attribute it to the inability to make good business decisions and to form a cohesive company. But either way, it ends with the same results.

I voted Symantec but it was a toss up between them and Sony. Both impacted my life in a significantly negative way this past year with Sony effecting my home computing life drastically but Symantec was effecting my work life on nearly a daily basis and so gets my nod. What do you prefer; having your pocket picked or having your purchase suddenly end up being a loan instead? This IS like voting for a politician; do you vote for bad or worse? Doctor Smith

I really wanted to vote for Computer Associates, but they likely already have a "lifetime achievement" award for being a bad vendor. Instead, I'll go for Microsoft. They give us many, many reasons to win this award, but the release of Vista alone makes them the best choice as the worst vendor.

I didn't know whether to vote for Msoft as worst vendor for 2007 driven primarily because of the onerous digital restrictions management built into Vista or recommend them for best vendor since the release of Vista drove me into the loving arms of Linux. In the end, I went with choice as worst vendor since so many others are going to be entrapped even further in the Msoft tentacles.

Close Call, but Verizon wins on Frequency[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#8)
by Anonymous User on Wed Jan 02, 2008 at 11:39:34 AM PDT

Verizon has carefully watched the marketplace, and broken, disabled, or charged more for every feature and upgrade that would make their cell phone service user-friendly. I should limit my Verizon vote to Verizon Wireless, as they distinctively make you log in to that web site, rather than making the mistake of trying to access your Verizon account at verizon.com. Comcast and Symantec have equally crippled their usability, but that has contacted my life less frequently, although using equally vile methods.

Earthlink is the stinker du jour[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#9)
by Anonymous User on Wed Jan 02, 2008 at 11:55:45 AM PDT

I've had trouble with several on the list in the past, but Earthlink is my latest pain. They used to have pretty good customer service, but the same old story, overseas outsourcing, changed that. The problem I was having was that they had changed me over to a new access number with a new modem pool. I was getting a busy signal much of the time. My theory was that one of their phone numbers wasn't rolling over. (Turned out to be right.) But trying to get ahold of someone who could actually fix that was frustrating. The clueless people somewhere in Asia kept wanting to run me through their scripts, even though it did no good. I finally called sales and asked, "If I sign up for Earthlink dialup, will it take me 45 minutes to log in?" The salesman was aghast and gave me a direct number to Drew, who handles the "escalated calls." Now why couldn't the yayhoos in Asia give me that number? Drew, by the way, did an excellent and fast job on getting me up and running, but his company needs to reexamine its support structure.

Too many reasons to really list. We used to use HP printers for their reliability. A reputation which the last year has toasted. A couple of servers that were DOA and took too damn long to finally get working. Issues with laptops that had minor problems that took major time and money to get repaired. Overall, a bad year for HP around this shop.

HP has to be right up there with me as well. We had nothing but good luck with HP printers lasting for years, then both of our recent and latest large format HP plotting printers went from $10k devices to worthless pieces of junk even unworthy of a landfill. Actually...not entirely worthless, since our equipment supplier DID take them in as trade-in...for less than 10¢ on the dollar.

As a consultant in charge of support and day to day ops of 45 networks that run Symantec products, I can honestly say that no other vendor has negatively impacted my work life like Symantec. Not only does their web site registration rarely work on the first try, their excessive licensning and complicated upgrade procedures are consistently a source of frustrations for me and my clients.

My single most frustrating support moment of the year was the two hours I spent on their website, trying to "activate/register/certify/log/whatever-they-call-it" a new NAV subscription for a small business. I am not an idiot, but their website sure made me feel like one! Their multi (and I mean MULTI!) step process is ridiculous beyond belief. In addition, Qwest and Verizon did basically everything they could to send me running into the arms of their ISP competitors. In my case, that is Comcast, and I have a great rep, so few complaints there.

Navigating Symantec's licensing site and successfully registering software (Backup Exec and Backup Exec options, in my case) made me feel like I'd just finished the most difficult PC game I've ever played. Maybe that's the problem; is Symantec hiring game developers that do web sites in their spare time?

What support?  When I upgraded Systemworks, it took over my floppy drive, would intercept email but not scan or release it.  Called Customer support, India I think, found I knew more about there product than they.  Was given a phone number to call which was answered but no one person for over an hour.  Wound up uninstalling Systemworks and reinstalling older Internet Security with many patches.  When I updated the antiviris license picking an extension instead of the cheaper upgrade, the help desk did not understand why I wanted to stay with a version that worked instead of saving money to upgrade to one that didn't.

I have been trying for two years to get a simple question answered: How do you manually adjust stock splits (in Quicken) to account for a beginning share balance that has a fractional share? (You do not want to "double" the whole share balance because only whole shares are split.) The goal is to have the correct cost basis, especially if shares are sold (but not all the shares are sold). I am still waiting for an answer. They keep responding with canned answers that have nothing to do with the topic. BTW, does anyone out there know the answer? Thanks. Honorable Mention: Customer Service at QVC (telephone or via "chat"). It is terrible!

I've fixed this a couple of times, but I forget the exact procedures.  One approach is to remove shares, the other approach is to sell shares for $0. The trick though is to keep your invested dollars and capital gain (loss) from changing.

Tough choices. I'd say Symantec, since their Norton AV screwed up my computer so badly that I was forced to reformat/reinstall Win2K. Microsoft, on the other hand, gets second place on my list of baddies since the bad reviews on Vista, problems with so called Genuine Windows forced my dad to repurchase a license for a legit copy of WinXP Pro. The two companies together drove me to purchasing a MacBook Pro, which has not given me a lick of trouble in the year that I've owned (and heavily used) it.

PayPal.. Which ranks right up there for lack of responsiveness to any inquiry about what is going on with a users account. It's not that they give bad answers - they don't answer AT ALL. No response. Zilch. HP has also slipped a notch here - in trying to get service under warranty on a server - it took days to get a response that should have been immediate. It will make me rethink our future server purchases.

I have had three major problems with Internet Explorer this year. Each of the three problems made important web sites unusable. Only one of the problems was resolved by Microsoft.

"Why is Microsoft putting out a new operating system that few people want or need when they can't keep their widely used operating system working properly?" The answer is simple. Greed, arrogance, and uncontrolled desire for conquest drives Microsoft, not customer satisfaction with quality products. They continue pushing the envelope of customer dissatisfaction and driving people away in record numbers - those that aren't stuck with them.

They know that eventually people will get new hardware, and when they do it will have Vista on it. And then sooner or later a Vista-only Office version's documents will start to become widespread enough to force everyone else to "upgrade" to Vista too.

Their ability to force OEMs to preinstall the Windows version of Microsoft's choice on all machines and fix the price of older, manageable versions like XP result in MS not having to care about user satisfaction or anything else.

AT&T gets my vote by far - mainly because they bought Those Lying Bastards BellSouth (TLBB from now on). TLBB pulled the ol' "Bait and Switch" on me about a year ago. The story is funny and sad, and could be perfect as a Gripeline subject one day. Short story is that I'm paying about 3 times what they quoted me originally. I'm now resting my mind and plotting strategies for another go 'round with them... MS comes in a close second, for Vista. Looks like I'll be upgrading to XP soon.

When I first heard the list, I said to myself "Gosh, I hope AT&T is on there!".  It was, and I didn't even look at the others.  In addition to billing issues like the previous reader mentioned (what's with this $120 "adjustment"?), they had a major (I mean major! Nationwide!), DNS server outage about a month ago that lasted for hours.  HOURS!

Luckily, I happened to have the IPs handy for some of the servers I maintain.  I was able to borrow their DNS IPs (happened to be of another ISP who has piss-poor configurations in terms of DNS, but at least they worked) until I found a suggestion for an alternate, upstream DNS (level 3?).

Oh, and then there's the random disconnects.  Luckily, dialup is included with the DSL... it was often necessary! When teleworking, a loss of Internet connectivity meant a loss of work.  At least with dialup, I was able to maintain e-mail, chat, and SSH access.

MS wins, mostly because CA isn't on the list. Microsoft's choice to roll out Vista when the OS wasn't ready for prime time gave me flashbacks to ME. OK, it wasn't quite that bad, but come on, how far in are we with this OS and there are still so many issues with hardware and software compatability? Thank goodness we could roll back to XP SP3 (and that Dell still sells XP and I have a PC guy who had to do all that work).

I had to leave some vendors off the list or we could have had hundreds. Oracle and CA have certainly been GripeLog stalwarts in the past, but I really didn't hear much about them in 2007. (I would have left SCO off the list too, but so many readers protested last year when I didn't include them that I felt obliged, and SCO did wind up drawing a share of votes.) Maybe we should do a "Lifetime Achievement" GripeLog poll one of these days -- that might be a pretty fierce contents. -- Ed

tough, though choice to make this year ...[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#25)

Hard to choose between Microsoft and Symantec, and they both have also deserved life time awards.
But between the two of them, I'd have to go with

  • eBay

'cause a vote for eBay is also a vote for PayPal !

  • AT&T because....[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#28)

AT&T may be the only company where not only didn't the representative offer her condolences when I called to cancel my mother's service after she died, they actually refused to pro-rate her monthly bill and wanted to charge an early termination fee. When I tried to discuss this with the agent (discuss, not yell) she disconnected the line we were speaking on. And, yes, she did know I was using the service we were canceling. I eventually got a manager to waive the early termination fee, but they still charged a deceased customer for an entire month of service. Nice company.

Comcast is the only ISP available in my neighborhood, or I would have switched to any other provider because 2 years of nagging intermittent connectivity poblems. Apple selling a phone for $600 was ludicrous; you can get a laptop for $600, but a freakin PHONE? Fortunately for those two, Microsoft is even worse. How can a company make an OS with only 40 percent the speed of it's predecessor and call it an upgrade? ...with at least three times as many bugs? ...and force everyone to pay $200 or more for it just to have some hope of tech support in the future? If an individual did that it would be called extortion.

In most cases you don't have to put up with the company you "voted" for here, there are alternatives. Major exception being some people have no choice for ISP or phone company.

I've got no gripes this year about Sony, Intuit, Symantec, or Roxio, companies I've had serious issues with in the past, because I no longer have any of their products in the house!

Verizon got my vote because Ernestine still lives. My last query for fiber service, in Culver City California was responded to by Verizon with "We have no plans to provision your area with fiber." The cable for fiber feeding the wealthier neighborhoods of the Playa Vista Development and the wealthier neighborhoods north of Venice Boulevard run under my street. So, I can go out and spit on the fiber feeds every day. I could have picked HP, Microsoft or Dell but, they were easy targets.

Symantec Of Course![ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#36)
by Anonymous User on Fri Jan 04, 2008 at 02:49:42 PM PDT

Symantec without a doubt. As someone new to IT and just taking over a recently vacated position, one of my first tasks was to upgrade the licenses for our small business. I would have had an easier time if I just drove to Symantec and got a printout. The website was a bust and every time I clicked a link I would get a 404 not found. I called Symantec and got what could only be considered the slowest man in India, who took an HOUR AND A HALF to get me my number. I didn't have to wait on hold, it was just him slowly tapping away at whatever they tap at.

Worst Vendor[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#40)
by sunnyboy on Wed Jan 09, 2008 at 12:02:28 PM PDT

Well, Sony is not on my list because... Sony is not on my list (as in NEVER, EVER BUY SONY AGAIN! - thanks rootkit). You can't have a bad vendor experience with a vendor you will never, ever use again! ;-) So - my worst vendor nominee for this year is NVidia. Decent hardware (I think), but WORST driver maker around. I had an older NVidia card, worked OK but finally the fan died. Rather than mess about with the fan, I opted to buy a newer card (faster, better, higher...). Card is OK, but with each driver update, the performance gets WORSE. Worst case? Old card, DVDs and videos would play quite well. New card, screen looks great, but videos all play totally "washed out". First two drivers, if you clicked other parts of the screen, the video would eventually become good. Howver, with the latest driver (needed by one application), the video is even more washed out and will NOT become decent, no matter what setting is tried or adjusted. (for example, on a letterboxed DVD, the black top and bottom are a wishy-washy grey, while the monitor outside the DVD player is jet black!). NVidea gets my vote as worst vendor of the year for their video drivers. -S

SCO should not be on the list[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#41)

To be a bad vendor, you must have a product in the vending machine. All SCO has to offer are bogus claims of ownership to other companies' property.

    Symantec for non-support[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#43)
by Anonymous User on Wed Jan 09, 2008 at 02:40:49 PM PDT

I am willing to accept that every product will at various times have trouble that needs tech support. I am willing to accept that outsourcing support to another continent is more cost-effective for the vendor, and the savings might even get passed on to us customers (not likely). However, when the support person's accent is so thick as to make him unintelligible, and the vendor uses low-grade phone lines or low-bandwidth VOIP circuits so that I have to repeat my question umpteen times, along with repeating "please say again" umpteen times squared, then I am not being supported. That's our Symantec experience - forced to call a far off land, to talk with mumbly minimum-wage script readers who are no more technically savvy than a midwest redneck. But at least I could understand a redneck. (With apologies to all tech savvy rednecks - some of my best friends are smart rednecks.)

Tough choice, but I'm going to go with Apple. I've got Leopard on one machine and Vista on another. As many problems as I've had with Vista, I still prefer it to Leopard. I can't count the number of frustrations and problems I've had with Leopard. It's actually got to the point that if I just want to get on the computer and surf the web or check email I now dual boot to Ubuntu.

Microsoft for me[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#49)

Between wrangling with this archaic licensing scheme on Office and WinServer, a Vista 'upgrade' that required me to downgrade back to XP on any machine that was built anytime prior to 2007 because of driver issues, and hell even the Xbox 360 was filled with bugs. Worst computer vendor of the year by far.

    Driver issues[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#54)

I'll grant that new (2006+) hardware is ideal for Vista and would even go so far as to say upgrading an XP system to Vista is a mistake and I would only recommend buying all-new hardware to get something with sufficient capacity (RAM/CPU) to run Vista. Flat out, Vista does more (much of it under the covers) so it takes more resources.

That said, driver issues are a result of the hardware vendors not creating good drivers. How is this Microsoft's fault?

OK.  I agree with your comment about drivers in general, but Microsoft keeps changing the inner workings of their Windows OS to the point that new drivers are necessary.  Why can't they allow XP drivers to function, until the hardware manufacturer's catch-up?  The answer is, of course, they can, but they won't.  Microsoft's business model is to change as much as possible between OS versions so that you need to rely on them for other software.  However, time and time again, Microsoft has trouble keeping up with itself.  They just have less trouble then most other software companies.
