Roxio Takes Vista Compatibility to New Level

By Ed Foster, Section The Gripelog
Posted on Tue Jul 17, 2007 at 12:41:48 AM PDT

Since we've just seen how some hardware manufacturers might be dragging their feet on Vista compatibility, it's only right we take a look at application software as well. And if there's one third party application you might assume is as compatible as can be with Microsoft's latest OS, it would be Roxio's Easy Media Creator 9. Yet readers say that not only does the program have many problems working with Vista, the fixes promised by Roxio are beginning to look like so much vaporware.

From the day Easy Media Creator 9.0 was introduced last September, Vista compatibility has been a point of emphasis for Roxio and parent company Sonic Solutions. Roxio was touted as a "Windows Vista Premier Launch Partner" during the Vista rollout, and Sonic even bragged that its DVD burning technology was being incorporated by Microsoft in Vista itself. Then in early May Roxio announced that the presumably already Vista-compatible program had received the Windows Vista Certification logo from Microsoft and that the "Windows Vista Certified version of Easy Media Creator 9 is now shipping to major retailers and e-stores and is available direct from Roxio."

In spite of the Microsoft certification, however, readers report that Easy CD Creator 9.0's Vista compatibility has left much to be desired. "I've used Roxio products in the past, so when I saw 9.0 was Vista certified, I ran out and bought it for my new PC," writes one reader. "When I next go to boot up my system, I get an error from Vista saying there's a conflict with an incompatible driver -- Roxio's DLA driver. This is Vista compatibility?"

The reader was in for a bigger shock when he contacted Roxio tech support. "They told me the version I have isn't the one that's certified for Vista," the reader wrote. "This is in spite of the fact that on the package I just purchased it says it's Easy Media Creator 9 and that it is Vista compatible. But, no, they say the real Vista compatible version is 9.1. If I want, I can go online right away and 'upgrade' -- pay them more money, in other words -- to get the 9.1 version. Or I can wait for a free patch that will make 9.0 Vista compatible. This is unbelievable! What does Vista certification mean if it can be this bad?"

The reader is hardly alone in his suffering, which means at least he was ultimately able to get help from other customers on Roxio's discussion boards to work around the DLA driver issue. But the boards also reveal that there are any number of other compatibility issues with Easy Media Creator 9 - and perhaps 9.1 as well. "There are all sorts of bugs in 9.0 that require the patch that Roxio has been promising 'soon' for many months now," says another reader who bought his version early in the year. "The drag-to-disk feature doesn't work correctly. The Dazzle DVC90 that comes in the 'Deluxe' suite doesn't work in Vista. Many in the forums have had problems just trying to copy disks."

The second reader says that it's been clear to all, including Roxio, since Vista first shipped that Easy Media Creator 9 has serious compatibility problems. "It was being sold as being Vista compatible, and they knew it wasn't," the reader wrote. "Roxio claims Microsoft changed something in Vista at the last minute. Rather than focusing on fixing it though, they decided to go for Vista Certification from Microsoft. They are supposedly now selling the 9.1 certified version. But some posters in the forums have claimed that the version you get downloading directly from Roxio is still 9.0."

In fact, identifying just which version of Easy Media Creator 9 you're buying seems to be a challenge in itself. Microsoft's Vista Certification page lists the build they tested as 9.1.45, but it's not clear whether that version is actually available from Roxio or in stores yet. What is clearly not available as I write this on July 16th is the "9.1 update" -- the promised patch that will provide the needed fixes for all those who bought Easy Media Creator 9 in the mistaken belief that it was Vista compatible.

"My specific concern here is why such an 'update' is taking so long after the 9.1 certified version has been announced as being available?" the second reader writes. "If they are selling 9.1, why is it so difficult to post a 9.0-to-9.1 patch? And if it is difficult for some reason, why couldn't they just let registered 9.0 users download 9.1 for free and forget the patch? While the Roxio representative in the support forums keeps saying that the free update is coming, others say Roxio has told them there are no plans to update 9.0 to 9.1. And Roxio is already working on version 10 that is built for Vista, so they may have no incentive to ever get version 9 working properly. Help!"

Unfortunately, there may be no help coming. After all, be it hardware or software, any vendor can decide that it will make more money on new products by dragging its feet on Vista-compatibility promises for its older products. The real lesson Roxio is teaching here is that those who believe that a "Windows Vista Certified" logo means there will be no problems are perhaps themselves certifiable.

If Roxio is advertising a previous (and non-comaptible) version as Vista compatible, Microsoft should pull the certification. Roxio should go on to a list of untrustworthy vendors, and have to prove itself worthy of the certification again. Otherwise, Microsoft is not protecting the value of the Vista certification, something they should have great interest in.

They still "certify" apps?[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#8)

I gave up over 10 years ago on the value of Microsoft's certification. Back then, M$ refused to issue a "Designed for Windows 95" logo for Novel/Corel WordPerfect Office Suite for Windows 95. This move was purely political on M$' part, despite the fact the product worked under Win95 (albeit buggy, but most of the bugs were corrected with free patches).

Maybe it's time we start taking everything Microsoft says with a grain of salt. Then again, I haven't trusted Roxio's crap for years, so who cares...

But then, I've said it once before and I'll say it again--Americans have gotten lazy in their use of class-action suits. If Roxio puts out v10 as a paid upgrade and leaves Vista-v9 users with no choice but to upgrade, then it's time for a class-action lawsuit against Roxio.

There are too many class action suits[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#12)
by Anonymous User on Tue Jul 17, 2007 at 07:23:57 PM PDT

Class action suits are bs. The lawyers get a huge payday and the customers who were ripped off get coupons for products they don't want to buy. They need to pass a law where the lawyers get paid the same way as the members of the class - if the customers get coupons, then the lawyers get coupons. If the lawyers want cash, the customers have to get cash too.

Class action suits don't help the members of the class.  Those coupons are almost completely worthless.  However they punish the companies and they hurt the companies where it counts, in their wallets.  For that reason they are worthwhile and companies will work hard to avoid a legitimate class action lawsuit.

Perhaps by giving customers one more reason to boycott the company? :P

P.S. what's with the subtle colors in the captcha now? Since it's still plain text it's obviously not to confound OCR software...

P.P.S. when will the default be changed to Auto Format again? And when will it be nailed in that setting and never fiddled with again?

Those class action lawsuits cost a lot of money.  The attorney's fees are huge.  The payroll to find the customers, mail them the coupons, verify that the customers are legitimate, the bad publicity, and the cash payment to the attorneys who successfully file the class action lawsuits all add up.

They're not perfect, but they do cost companies money, even when the companies win them.

Roxio software[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#3)

I had so many compatibility problems with Roxio Ez CD Creator software, starting with version 7.0, 7.5 and 8.0, that I simply removed it from my PC. I started to use Nero at that point, and have never had any problems since.

Nero's not the best answer[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#13)
by foxyshadis1 on Wed Jul 18, 2007 at 12:24:14 AM PDT

Nero has its own problems since the release of 7.0, the biggest being the weekly patches, which come in the form of originally 120 meg and now 180 meg updates off of a woefully overloaded server that tends to time out, or gets 10K/s when lucky. I'd never bother if it all worked, but what the patchman giveth the patchman taketh, each new one has some ridiculous new problem like Vision fails to save properly, the burner loses compatibility with the external drive, nero codecs stop working outside Showtime (this was intentional, they locked them until there was an uproar), and on and on.

Still better than Sonic, who's been the last to support a new OS and the first to abandon an old (in the 98/2k/xp transition period), but I've moved myself and clients over to individual, mostly free apps to do what the Nero suite did: Imgburn, Audacity, DVD Shrink or DVD-RB, Handbrake, Daemon Tools, MPC or GOM Player, Vegas, Retrospect. All of which are more stable and at least as easy to use as their Nero counterparts.

Vista has shown itself as a piece of beta software foisted upon an uneducated public that falls for the M$ company line. Why would you even think of buying a piece of garbage like Vista until it's been around for a year or two? Buyer beware ,and in this case, if you know anything about how M$ works, you should have seen this one coming.

I don't think this is just a Vista compatibility issue. I think Roxio has dropped the ball. We recently upgraded a few of our XP machines with Roxio 9 and had issues. I had 5 copies of Roxio 9. Four of the copies were one version, the last was version 9.1. The 9.1 worked fine, but the v. 9.0 kept asking me to register. It would "remind you" to register 3 times, then that message was supposed to go away. Instead it reset itself and--of course--started the countdowan again. So I finally registered the product. And the countdown continued. Our users couldn't run a CD/DVD without having to say "no thanks" every time. We switched to Nero and couldn't be happier.

I have used Sonic/Roxio for years and was a licensed 8.0 user. So when I put Vista on my notebook I immediately upgraded to the "Vista Ready" 9.? version online, paid my money, and dowloaded the software. It immediately broke Vista with the DLA Driver issue. So I removed that feature. What I really wanted was the DVD Burning and their Audio applications. Nothing worked. I tried removing it and reinstallling it. Nope, just made things worse. I am one mad guy over this. And to make thing worse, since I am a "valued customer" I get weekly e-mails promoting their Deluxe version. Over my dead body! Perhaps if they update me at no cost, nada, zip cost, I might give them another chance. But Sonic/Rixio are dog poop in my book. And I am never shy about telling anyone who ask. I found "Burn My Files" a few months back and it works absolutely perfectly. I highly recommend Burn My Files to any Vista users. It works reliably, is fast, and easy to use. www.burnmyfiles.com <- Highly Recommended Dalton W. Williams dalton@dwill.com

I fell into the same trap, saw the "Certified for Vista" logo and thought I could trust Roxio to have a product that would work effectively on Vista. Wrong. I have several issues and have gotten nothing from the program. I'm using my time trying to fix software when I could be doing more productive things. Roxio is a disappointment and John in Roxio's support forum continues to toe the company line: " Digital Master Group: Administrator Posts: 1,865 Joined: 25-March 06 Member No.: 4,564 First I want to apologize for the update taking so long to be released. I wont bore you with excuses but I will say that we are sorry and we are working on the update as hard as we can. I hope to have some news to report to you soon, but for now I just want to promise again that the update will be out as soon as we can get it finalized and tested. Thanks for your patience in this matter. FYI. Any additional posts regarding this issue will be linked to this message and locked. " I especially like that last part. Anyway I strongly recommend users bitch on every blog and forum they can find. Best, Almost-fed-up Roxio user

vista compatibility?[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#16)
by hispeedtech on Wed Jul 18, 2007 at 10:21:20 AM PDT

A few general comments on vista cd/dvd issues, and a specific suggestion that might help users with true compatibility issues.

First off, I haven't seen anybody that hasn't had some type of issue trying to write cd/dvd's in vista. It doesn't seem to matter what software they're using, they have problems. My own issue is that vista won't recognize there is a cd or dvd in the drive if it's blank or self made unless I run a factory issued cd or dvd first (music, movie, software, cd, or dvd, it doesn't matter). Want to make a bet that this doesn't have something to do with M$'s DRM? (How about looking into that one Ed?)

Now, if you're having true compatibility issues, try this. Right click the program you want to install. Choose Properties. Choose Compatibility tab. From the drop down menu choose the last known version of Windows that the software worked on (Win 95 thru XP SP2 are listed). Click Apply. Click OK. Now install the program as you normally would. Alternately, you can run the Compatibility Wizard by going to Help and typing "compatibility" into the search field. I had a couple of programs designed for Win 98 SE that I absolutely had to have on my new computer and using the compatibility mode worked like a charm! One caveat, DO NOT run security, system, or system tools programs in compatibility mode.

Good luck!
Ken

Hello! Bugs in software are acceptable, if quickly fixed (however it seems last times more and more bugtesting is made by users who've paid for this "privilege"). But total disaster that Roxio support presents (it looks like they don't even read the tickets they get) is not acceptable. Add to this extreme fragility of EMC9 (change some minor software component in your PC and BLAM!, you get crashes). Add to this forum admins who claim to be "users like you" yet with every post seem to say "it's your fault" and who silently delete threads with not convenient contents, and you get the picture. I have one piece of advice for all of you- avoid Roxio- there are another products with similar performance AND timely support and bugfixes.

"The real lesson Roxio is teaching here is that those who believe that a "Windows Vista Certified" logo means there will be no problems are perhaps themselves certifiable." The real lesson you should learn here is that those who believe that a "Windows Vista Certified" logo means they are certifiable should get a dictionary and check the meaning of the word "exception" and learn an old saying that goes "the exception confirms the rule". What Vista compatibility issues have you encountered?" In more than 60 software products I use, only 3: Norton AntiVirus 2006 (fixed with Symantec AntiVirus 10.2), ZoneAlarm Pro Firewall (fixed with ZoneAlarm Free Firewall for Vista) and Diskeeper 11 (fixed with Diskeeper 2007).

I'd take another look at that zone alarm firewall if I were you. I downloaded and installed it on 7/10. Everything installed correctly, except for 2 files. Two very important files; vsinit.dll and vsutil.dll. Without these the vsimon engine won't work. The result? ZA installs. ZA can be configured. But, the ZA firewall is never really turned on! The exception is if you allow vista to install it in XP SP2 compatibility mode. The problem with that is that leaves holes in the firewall you can drive a digital Mack truck through.

If your version is actually turned on please let us know. The version number and a link to it would be greatly appreciated!

The old saying is: "The exception *proves* the rule", not "*confirms*". The saying is hundreds of years old, and came from a time when "prove" meant "test"; what the saying means is that exceptions test the rule to see if it is true, or should be discarded.

Obviously Roxio is most at fault here. It claims the software is Vista compatible when in fact it is not. Return the product and demand a refund.

But, it is best to avoid Windows Vista as far as possible. Many hardware and software, especially older ones, may not be compatible with it. Not to say the intrusive DRM and "Software Protection Platform".

Microsoft is guilty as well as you virtually cannot buy a new PC with an OS other than Vista now (except in some cases), due to the PC companies' agreements and contracts with Microsoft. Demand XP while you can. Or, consider alternatives such as an Apple Mac.

First, email Microsoft and let them know your dissatisfaction. Roxio's complete lack of integrity in these issues with Vista virtually mandates some kind of action. I paid nearly $100 for a software that still isn't working on Vista even though it stated in December that it was compatible with Vista. 9 months later we're still at square one.
