Insecurity Over More Security Questions

By Ed Foster, Section The Gripelog
Posted on Fri May 04, 2007 at 12:11:55 AM PDT

With phishing scams and other forms of identity theft targeting our bank accounts, financial institutions are increasingly adding additional security checks. But one reader wonders if asking you more questions isn't just a recipe for more points of failure.

"All my online banking and credit card companies are creating three security questions which only I will have the answer to," the reader wrote. "Typically they will ask me to identify the name of my high school, the street I lived on when I was in elementary school or some other similar, seemingly obscure question. These should be easy questions to answer, and in a general way they are."

But with each company requiring its own set of security questions, remembering the precise answer starts to get more difficult. "Let's take an example like the street I lived on as a kid," the reader wrote. "When they re-ask the question to validate my security, I have to remember, did I only use lower case, or did I capitalize the first letter? Did I just type in the street name, or did I remember to put in the word 'street' at the end -- i.e. was it 'Main' or 'main' or 'Main Street' or 'Main St' or 'main street' I typed?"

"My solution is to write down the security question with the answer, so when it is re-asked, I can look up what the correct answer is," the reader wrote. "So now I have a stack of papers with my security questions and answers next to my computer. At least with my passwords, I had created a system where I could memorize them all and still have unique passwords for different sites."

The more security questions the banks ask, the less secure the reader is feeling. "Bottom line -- I find these security questions to be a false sense of protection. Anyone who really was targeting me can find the answers, and I have to keep a paper trail just to track all the correct answers. And that just increases the possibility that someone will find a way to compromise my information."

Is there a better way for financial institutions to increase security without increasing the complexity we must deal with? Let's hear your thoughts - post your comments below or write me at Foster@gripe2ed.com.

There are secure programs[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#1)

for storing information. My needs are met with Password Plus. There is also BigCroc (I think that is how it is called) and there are others.

They generally employee encryption and the better ones allow for naming/renaming fields as needed.

It has gotten to the point that I only remember key passwords and use Passwords Plus for everything else.

Peace,

For Mac users, the built-in password manager, Keychain, can store secure text files, as well as passwords.

I just ran into the problem recently. My first real job or the lab assistant job in college? And it turns out I misremembered where we were married when I originally answered the security questions. (The problem was a matter of subcities in a metropolitan area.)

I use PWSafe: "Originally created by Bruce Schneier's Counterpane Labs, Password Safe has opened its source." It's a SourceForge project now. I've used this for years, and it's great. You can great groups of passwords, attach web addresses and notes, etc. A great piece of free software.

Stupid security[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#4)

Ok, you make up a dumb requirement, and I'll figure out how to "game" the system. Mother's maiden name? I don't think so. I use ROBOFORM for all my passwords. So if site #1 asks "mother's maiden name", I plug in QXDEFLUP. (Roboform also generates random strings quickly and easily.) Now Site #2 ask "mother's maiden name", I plug in VDEJYNAF. If Site #1 wants to crack my id on Site #2, then they can't. Trust no one. And, if one of my relatives, or the clerk at the SS office, who knows my Mom's maiden name wants to crack my account, good luck! See these "security questions" are really just "extra" passwords. Having two passwords isn't two factor authentication. Sigh, but it makes their auditors feel secure. How it would fare in court is anyone's guess?

No additional security[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#5)
by Fushigi on Mon May 07, 2007 at 11:35:13 AM PDT

Authentication is generally comprised of the following factors:

- Something you know (passwords, mother's maiden name, etc.)

- Something you are (biometrics like fingerprints or retina scans)

- Something you have (token devices and their like)

To be considered 'more secure' one must do multi-factor authentication; i.e. have a response from more than one factor. Multiple responses within a single factor do not appreciably add to security. As such, asking for the last 4 digits of your SSN, your mother's maiden name, or any other questions do little more than expand the company's personal profile database. They do not add security.

Bank and Roboform[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#6)
by auctionhugh on Tue May 08, 2007 at 03:27:41 PM PDT

I use Roboform to memorize and fill in all my passwords with a click or two. Now for some insane reason my credit union first requires my account number and that I type in the four digit number from a random image. Then I can go on to the enter password page. Unfortunately this breaks roboform's ability to log me in automatically since I have to read and type a number every time. I'm sure it is more secure (no scripts can try every combo) but I hate it.

passwords, random[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#7)
by aoz on Tue May 08, 2007 at 04:07:33 PM PDT

I just generate random passwords for ANY of the questions. I use Password Manager XP; I store the questions there, and the answers. I dont' think the companies really care what you answer with; they've just made some questions that you might want to remember the answers for, but I don't want to remember ANY" of my passwords; I just use the password program to fill in answers, and store the answers. the only downside (and also upside) is that If I call one fo the companies, I need to be in front of my computer, to have access to my password program. BUT, that means that someone else can't call in either, as they have NO CLUE as to what my passwords are.

PC Crash[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#10)
by Garminski on Wed May 09, 2007 at 08:07:04 AM PDT

What happens if your PC crashes? You would lose access to your accounts (from the internet at least). I would think this would be a pain to try and resolve through customer service. Has anyone had all their passwords in one of these programs and then had their PC crash? I would not feel comfortable not knowing my passwords.

Password memorizers ...[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#9)
by Grim Reader on Wed May 09, 2007 at 06:35:33 AM PDT

only work well if you're on the same (secure) PC each time. If you use a shared one at the library, or a company laptop on the road, these programs won't fill the need all that well. If you and your spouse use different PCs, then synchronization is a challenge. On that last note, I got both of us locked out of an account: Spouse had entered security info on a credit card servicing site that handles multiple private brands. I have a different account at same site, albeit with a different user name as well. Between the two of us, we managed to get the security answers messed up, and ended up locked out of our account. Sure, we can call to try to re-activate it, but what a pain (and the reason I use Internet is so I can set my hours rather than cater to the credit-card service hours). Many years back, a credit card company shipped a dongle to use on any PC that needed to talk to them. That procedure died a quick death.

It Gets Even Better[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#11)

My bank's "multi-factor authentication" REQUIRES me to keep their cookies on my machine or it challenges me with the usual test questions. e.g. First Street, First Car, First School, etc. EVERY time I try to log in, and assigns a new "number" to my machine. I'm up to #24 at last count. It also, as I understand it, violates "best practices" which are to kill every cookie when I close my browser, so they're not left lying around for any flaw in the browser's security to pick up.

Passwords[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#12)
by Rey on Tue May 15, 2007 at 09:28:40 AM PDT

What kind of sitemaster mind thinks that changing passwords regularly adds to security?

Quite the opposite. Since we are buried under logins and passwords from many sites that we must keep precisely straight, forced password expiration requires us to write them down someplace.

Writing down passwords is many orders of magnitude less secure than keeping the same memorized one for all time.

So yes, when an online service requires that I use a fluctuating password, I don't deal there.

Additional information out there[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#13)
by newops on Wed May 16, 2007 at 05:59:42 AM PDT

Unfortunately, the new questions don't really solve the problem for long. It is simply more personal information out there that may be used to impersonate you if compromised. And some of the security questions go over the line. Three I saw recently were "Mother's Maiden Name", "Father's Middle Name", and "Your Place of Birth". All information requested for loan applications. One useful feature is that the answers aren't verified, and aren't even checked for reasonableness. So I've taken to answering questions with standard unrelated answers. For example: Q1: "Color of your first car?" A1: "DoG" Q2: "Mother's Maiden Name?" A2: "AlbuQuerQue" Q3: "Your favorite food?" A3: "MadOnna" Easy to remember, and gives away nothing if the information at that organization is compromised.
