Intuit Quickens the Pace of Reverse Change

By Ed Foster, Section The Gripelog

Even mature software products are supposed to keep changing for the better. To hear some Quicken customers tell it though, you might think that Intuit is actually trying to subtract features from its venerable personal finance package.

Intuit's dedication to sunsetting older versions of its products often leads it to remove features. "It comes as no surprise to see that the folks at Intuit are at it again, with Quicken 2004 now being sunsetted in favor of 2007," wrote one reader. "As you noted in 2005, the 1999 version sunsetted after five years, and now we are down to only three years. But the worst thing about this is that 2004 is the last version that supported QIF file import and at least one of my financial institutions does not support the newer methodology that I believe Intuit charge them pretty heavily for. If I switch to 2007, I will be able to download stock prices, but NOT my 401K data. If I stick with 2004, I will lose the ability to download stock prices but will be able to download and update my 401K data. Whichever option I choose will give less functionality than I enjoy today. So if I switch, I lose the ability to import; if I don't switch I lose the ability to download stock prices etc. Switch or not - I lose! Intuit's programs in themselves are good, but their predatory marketing practices stink."

Other readers complain that even some basic features seem to turn off for periods of time. "Many users of Quicken are frustrated by Intuit's apparent lack of interest in addressing a specific issue that has been occurring recently for users of the program," a reader wrote last month. "It incorrectly downloads equity closing prices, assigning the prices to the next day's record. As you probably know one of the major reasons many of us subscribe to Quicken is to track our financial investments and if quote data is missing or inaccurate, our records are compromised. Similar issues have arisen from time to time in the past, but now it's taking much longer to get the attention of Intuit's management and get them to fix the problem. And if they do fix it, whether it will continue to work and for how long is a concern."

Perhaps the oddest Quicken complaint involves a problem that seems to be the result of both Intuit's fondness for crippleware and indifference to customer support issues. "My latest nightmare with the increasingly irresponsible Intuit tech support transformed a one-minute solution into a six-hour nightmare," a reader wrote. "I've been using Quicken to manage our personal finances since 1993, so our data file has gotten kind of large over the decade and a half, but it worked very well until I upgraded to Quicken Deluxe 2006 and had a heck of a time getting the file to open. After much effort I found a way to open it -- after Intuit support kept telling me the file must be corrupt and put me through reconstructing it via Quicken' s tools. But after upgrading to Quicken 2007 this year and converting the recalcitrant file into Quicken 2007 format, I could open it once and that was it. Subsequent attempts to open it resulted in Quicken instantly closing."

The reader again had to work his way through more layers of Intuit tech support who insisted the file must be corrupt, even after he discovered it would import perfectly into a free trial version of Microsoft Money. "Finally I got a response to an e-mail I had sent with a link to what turned out to be an incredibly simple solution that Intuit keeps pretty secret. Apparently beginning with Quicken 2005, Intuit has imposed a secret file-naming scheme that does not comply with Windows' conventions. Keep in mind that Intuit never sought Windows XP certification for some of its products like QuickBooks and Quicken because it didn't want to comply with some of Microsoft's technical specifications. It turns out that Quicken data filenames cannot be more than 8 letters and numbers long and that the full filename path cannot exceed 39 characters. Once I used my file manager to change the name of my Quicken file to a shorter name, the file opened without any difficulty. I certainly can live with this restriction, but it is astounding that Intuit would change the file naming convention and not shout it out to purchasers of its software. At a bare minimum, there should be a sheet included with the boxed software that alerts customers to this change or the installation program should alert you at the beginning of the installation. Heaven only knows how many hours of customers' time (not to mention the anxiety of possibly losing access to 14 years of financial data) has been wasted due to this inexcusable oversight! Heaven only knows how much tech support time has been taken up due to this oversight! And only heaven knows why so many Intuit tech support people do not recognize this possible -- and easily solved -- problem! What an industry."

It is indeed an odd business where a company seems to think that giving its customers less capability is technological progress. Have you seen any examples of technology going in reverse? Tell me about it on the Gripe Line voice mail at 1 888 875-7916 or write me at Foster@gripe2ed.com.

Not just with versions - also with updates[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#1)
by mzuroff on Tue Mar 06, 2007 at 01:08:29 PM PDT

Not only with versions does Intuit remove features, but they also make changes to functionality with updates. This is in QuickBooks 2006 (not even a sunsetted version - yet).

Recently, payroll for my company was processed (manual payroll - we do not subscribe to the Intuit payroll service). The next day, my accountant installed the latest update to QuickBooks Pro 2006. When going to run the forms 940 and 941, she was cordially invited to subscribe to the payroll service. Without the service, the program will not allow printing of these forms, or the data needed for them. Prior to this update, the interview process would run, and the data was generated.

A manual payroll entry had always been available without subscription.

Called the QuickBooks support line (Mark Pagarigan), whose suggestion was to re-install the program, and not to perform any updates. The call was then escalated to a supervisor (Elvin). Elvin stated that Intuit was aware of this, and we were directed to the website. The only information found on the site (http://www.quickbooks.com/support/faqs/docs/w_15r9notes.html) is in the description of Release 9, which states:

The IRS changed Form 940 for tax year 2006. This update to QuickBooks was required to fully support the new Form 940, in addition to changes that will be a part of a Payroll update for Payroll Service subscribers. In order to accurately create your 2006 Form 940 you will need this latest release and the Payroll Update that contains the new Form 940 for 2006. (R9)

This quote indicates to me that the update is required prior to updating for Payroll Service Subscribers. It does not in any way (that I see) indicate that non-subscribers would lose functionality that had been available prior.

Perhaps R10 will require a subscription to reconcile a checking account, or perhaps accounts payable will become an option.

Fraudulent deactivation[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#2)

As a user of Quicken 2004, I recently got one of those "sunset letters" and it has me steamed.

According to the EULA for Quicken 2004, "Online Banking, Online Investment Account Download, ... and any other online financial services available through the Internet and selected Intuit products ("Online Services") are provided by your financial institution or other third party, and not Intuit...." (Google quicken 2004 EULA and look at Google's cached copy if all else fails.)

So according to their own EULA, online downloading is NOT provided by Intuit but by my bank. So Intuit is turning off a feature which they don't even provide.

I purchased the software to do account transaction downloading. The box made no mention of this feature being good for only 3 years. According to the EULA, my bank--not Intuit--provides this feature. So what gives Intuit the right to turn this off?

If you want me to upgrade, create a new version with "must-have" features; don't cripple my current version. If you want me to buy Quicken in a software subscription format (like many anti-virus programs), sell it like that up-front.

Time to complain to Intuit, and if they don't resolve this, file a complaint with my state's attorney general's office. If this doesn't fall under a deceptive trade practice, what does?

Canceled features[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#4)

Didn't we read here how Intuit perfected their user-unfriendly practices with QuickBooks, and now they've it to Quicken. One reason I switched from my home-built budgeting program to Quicken was that it could download stock prices. Oh, wait, they decided that I haven't upgraded enough recently, so they're blocking a feature that they used to advertise as part of the program. I guess they lied about that feature. Looks like it's time to look into resurrecting my old program. It was ironic that I had at least three notes from Intuit in the past few months asking me to send my resume and apply for positions there. As if I'm eager to work for a company that you can't be proud of. Wonder if that's why they have so many openings.

Other Quiken Issues[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#3)
by srynas on Tue Mar 06, 2007 at 05:46:21 PM PDT

I have been using Quicken for 12 years now.  I guess I am a masochistic.

First, Quicken seems to be following the trend of the content industry to segment their products.  What this means of course is that some products have more features and others less.  This makes me nervous, especially with TurboTax.  I buy the Deluxe version, which used to be the top-of-the-line. But TurboTax has now introduced a new "Premier" version and I am not sure if the Deluxe version is still providing the same level of functionality or if it has been dumbed down.

Second, Quicken in the past has changed file formats with every annual version.  What this means is that if you buy the new version and test it out, you cannot go back to the old version. I think this type of business behavior is unethical.

Third, Both Quicken and TurboTax have embedded adds in the product. I don't want to see these little "helpful" reminders to spend more money to upgrade. Intuit should remove all its adds.

Fourth, when registering an update you enter the usual contact information; but if you want to opt-out, you have to go to a different screen and enter all the contact information over again!! Clearly they have designed the registration process to be cumbersome to make it difficult to opt-out.  I guess this is for our benefit to improve our customer experience.

Maybe someone from Intuit will take the opportunity to respond as to why they do this type of unethical business behavior. Ed, since these have been long standing "issues" with Intuit - would you be able to solicit a response from Intuit?

Sigh, I guess all we would get is a response that customers "approve" of these "features".

Use best of breed[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#5)

While I use Quicken for my bank accounts, I long ago decided it didn't have what it took to handle my investment accounts. Instead, I use Fund Manager (www.beiley.com), which is an incredibly rich program for handling stocks, bonds, and mutual funds (including full automated downloads for quotes and transactions). I think the author is a solo programmer, but he knows his stuff and is incredibly responsive; several suggestions I've made have shown up in the next versions, and he responds quickly to any comments/questions left on his bulletin board.

Solo writers may not be able to do some of the really complex stuff, but it's quite impressive what comes out of some of them, and they're always way too hungry to be arrogant.
