The Worst Vendor of 2006

Which company was the worst to deal with last year? That's a good question, and one that we should put to a vote. And just to make sure your voice gets heard, I'm going to let you vote more than once. Not only that, you can easily persuade me to give your vote more weight than that of other readers.


Based on the number of times they appeared in reader gripes in 2006, I'm nominating ten candidates for the honor of Worst Vendor of 2006: AOL, Apple, Dell, Earthlink, EBay, HP, Microsoft, Oracle, Symantec, and Verizon. You can vote for your choice (only once, please) by finding the poll in the left-hand column next to this story, and you can see how readers are voting. But there are other ways to cast your vote, and you're invited to try them all.

We've had a lot of fun with the GripeLog polls over the last few years, and we've learned a lot from them too. But, of course, web polls are very unscientific and prone to ballot box stuffing of various kinds. As readers often point out with our polls, you know going in that the big name vendors are the ones that will ring up the most tallies, so who the "winner" is in terms of sheer number of votes doesn't tell the whole story.

In point of fact, though, the greatest value in all the GripeLog polls we've done has always come from the comments readers have posted or e-mailed explaining why they voted the way they did, or telling me which vendor I left off the ballot that should have been there. Which makes sense. After all, my weblog is all about reader gripes, so getting to hear about the reasons why readers voted the way they did is more than worthwhile.

Two things have changed since I last ran a poll, though. One is the unfortunate fact that, as I explained a few weeks ago (see "Suspending Anonymous Posting" ), the link spam scum have forced me to require readers to have a log-in account in order to post comments. And, yes, so far that step appears to have been the right thing to do in bringing that problem under control. But it does mean it won't be as easy for casual visitors who come to vote in the Worst Vendor poll to post their thoughts, as they'll first have to go to the sign-up page.

Luckily, the other thing that's different provides a simpler way of making your voice heard. Now that I've started doing the Gripe Line podcasts, you can just phone your comments in by dialing the Gripe Line toll free number at 1 888 875-7916 and leaving a voice mail telling me who you think was the Worst Vendor of 2006 and why. It will be interesting to see how the results we get over the phone match up with the weblog poll tally and the online comments.

You don't have to choose which method to use, however, because you're welcome to do both. And, of course, you're welcome to e-mail your comments to me at Foster@gripe2ed.com as well. And neither are you restricted to talking about one of my ten nominees - if you have a candidate you think is even more worthy of this coveted title, let us hear it.

So vote once in the poll and vote often by posting, phoning, and/or e-mailing your comments. Toward the end of the month I'll do both a weblog story and a podcast announcing the winner or winners. And you'll also get to hear - quite literally in the case of the podcast - some of the choicest comments readers contributed to back up their votes. Whichever company you think earned the honor of being called the Worst Vendor of 2006, let them know how much you care by sounding off on the Gripe Line.

In January of 2006, Dell replaced my broken Axim X5 PDA with an X50, as the X5 is no longer available. So far, so good. However, they neglected to ship the sync cable, cradle, or power cord with it, and, except for the power cord, the X5 parts wouldn't work. A backup of the X5 data to SD card couldn't be read by the X50 (apparently, Mickeysoft made too many changes to the CE operating system). I called Dell to get the parts, and asked for next day shipping so I could use the PDA at CES. Four days later, I left for CES without the parts, and was unable to use the PDA, as with the backup/restore broken and the sync cable missing, I could get none of the old data onto it. When I returned from CES, the parts were waiting - two complete sets of them, and I had been charged for both, along with a charge for the next day shipping I didn't receive. They eventually refunded the extra parts (once I sent them back), but they never did refund the next day shipping. The doubled orders were probably because the person I was talking to spoke such poor English he got confused. Quality - NOT.

I am a customer of Comcast cable TV and high speed Internet service. I use the residential service at my home, commercial service at my place of business and my daughter uses residential service at her home. I have been a customer for many years, primarily because there is no real competition in my area. Comcast has impressed me as one of the worst vendors that I do business with. I could tell numerous stories of their arrogance, inefficiency, and generally confused way of doing business. I will provide two short examples. I recently had a commercial install completed where I work as a volunteer. The whole process over a month and they sent out eight different techs to complete the job. One was a residential installer who should not have been sent. One was a team that ran an outside line to a node that did not work. This was interesting because the previous tech did not do this because he knew the distance was too great for it to work. Through out this whole scenario most of the techs that did outside work never checked in with us to let us know what they were trying to accomplish so we never knew if progress has been made. If we did not see them outside our window, we would not even know they had been there. It was also evident that no two people in the organization had any clue about what anybody else had done or was scheduled to do. One of the techs showed up Christmas week when we were closed because they could not bother to call ahead to see if we would be present. Over the years I have called Comcast tech support for my home residential line. The first line customer support is abysmal. I always have to go through a lengthy voice menu and then I always have to wait ten to twenty minutes just to talk to someone. Many times I will get disconnected while on hold. Once I get through to a customer service rep it gets more difficult. A few weeks ago I reported a loss of service on my digital cable TV service. I told them the analog channels were also gone as well as my Internet connection. They immediately wanted me to start running checks on my equipment! I think it should have been obvious that if I have a HD DVR/TV and a second Digital Box/TV and a third analog TV and a separate Internet connection to my computer all not working, the problem is not my computer or DVR box it is obviously the connection to their network. After I resisted testing my equipment and recycling my DVR box they scheduled an appointment for a tech to come to my house in about three days (normally it might be a wait of a week or more). I told them I suspected a general outage in my area but they said they had no indication of this. I have learned from experience when they have a general outage, the customer service representatives apparently have no way of finding this out. They never seem to know about it and I doubt that I am always the first to call it in. Then they told me if it turned out to be a general outage they would automatically cancel the tech. Well it was a general outage, it got fixed several hours later and a few days later a tech showed up at my house. I was not home and my wife let him in. (She had not read the paper about a Comcast tech who recently murdered a customer.) The tech fooled around and replaced a splitter and declared the problem was fixed. Of course the frosting on the cake is the fact every year they provide their customers with a New Year's present in the form of a rate increase. This year was no exception. They have earned the number one position on my list of worst vendors.

All right. It's already 2007, but my three hour horror show with an HP OfficeJet 5510 printer today reminded me how absolutely shabby the HP printer and scanner software is. I've have numerous similar experiences, dealing with HP printers and scanners that simply stop working without a clue as to why. HP's web site even has downloadable software which you can use to clean up after screwed up printer software, but there is none for the OfficeJet 5510. Instead, you have to follow a 3-page procedure to remove all the printer software manually before attempting a reinstall. Let's see now. HP can write software to clean up after the printer software, but they can't write printer software to install cleanly under all circumstances. So rather than solving a known software problem with an update, HP issues bandaid software to clean up. Okay, I get it now. Of course! Windows is at fault, because it is the most complex piece of software in the history of the universe. Because Windows is such a piece of work, and Microsoft has such draconian anti-piracy policies, I would normally vote for Micro$oft 364 days out of 365 as the worst vendor of 2006. I'm still for Symantec[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#7)

- Systemworks 2006 - no work. Initial support clueless (sounded Indian) working from script. Was referred to an expert that did not answer phone giving up after 40 minutes. - Tried to renew Internet Security 2005 via website, website would allow upgrade. Said renewal was $249.99 but errorred out if I tried. Had to call support after wading through website for a number (Indian again) and explain why I wanted to pay $50 for renewal and not the same for upgrade. I had to explain I'd rather pay double last year's renewal price for a product that was working than upgrade to one that didn't and wait hours for someone to who knew how to make it work. Ripping us off as usual.

Replace Symantec[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#26)

I replaced my Symantec security (firewall and antivirus) with AVG Pro from Grisoft. It's more reliable and less expensive than Symantec's software, and is good for two years as opposed to Symantec's one year. A year ago I had a user who wanted me to install the Norton Internet Security program and I advised her to take it back (she hadn't yet opened the shrinkwrap) and buy the AVG program. She did and has had no problems since. I'll never use Symantec's programs again!

I also replaced the Symantec antivirus software with AVG. My computer runs much better without the large overhead that Symantec requires and I haven't had a single virus in the 10+ months since I made the switch.

I used to think Amazon.com was a great business. Then I ordered a $800.00 lens for my new camera through them. It was back ordered - not their fault, the manufacturer couldn't make them fast enough. (It's a great lens).

Things were okay, I was waiting and every month I answered their email by visiting their site and checking the box that said: Yes, I really do want to keep waiting for this item.

Then after seven months, either the email got caught in some spam filter or their web page glitched my response, I never did figure out which. The next thing I know they've canceled my order. Repeated calls would not get them to reinstate my order. They wanted me to re-order and go to the back end of that eight-month-plus long line.

Talk about shooting themselves in the foot. Not only did they loose an $800 sale, I will not shop there again.

You can call Amazon.  I found an 800 number via google and called them about a shipping problem; the phone was promptly answered by a friendly person who was (to my ears) a native English speaker.  My problem was resolved to my satisfaction within just a minute or two.

I've ordered many dozens (if not several hundreds) of items from Amazon and the shipping problem was the only one I've experienced.  Better odds than most meatspace stores from my point of view.

My vote is for HP. We have paid for on-site support but they never come and want you to do the troubleshooting. I always remember that when you pay for on-site support and you have a new computer go bad, they come and fix it. Not so with HP. They want you to troubleshoot the computer via a off-shore India call center where the English is not good enough to understand what they are saying. It got so bad we had to pay for an independent company to give us on-site HP support. What a sham from HP. I am a busy IT person which is why we pay for on-site support. It should be enough that when I tell HP the new monitor does not work they should send me a new one. I should not have to take time to sit down on the phone a troubleshoot this kind of problem. On-site means on-site to me. Shame on HP!

Gateway's "Gold on site service" is just as bad.  I consider Gateway's warranty a joke and I disqualify them as a vendor based on their definition of warranties.
