An Invite to a Symantec Bash

By Ed Foster, Section The Gripelog
Posted on Tue Jun 06, 2006 at 12:31:03 AM PDT

Symantec has lately been going through something of a rough patch, if you'll pardon the expression. With Microsoft taking aim at its core market at the same time that security holes in Symantec's corporate products have been coming to light, it seems like everybody's been picking on them. And that's certainly all the invitation Gripe Line readers need to join the fun, so let me kick off this bash by offering another of my periodic collections of recent Symantec gripes from readers.

"I've subscribed to Norton AntiVirus for at least 3 years and never had a problem, but then I purchased Norton's Internet Security 2006 and have had nothing but problems since," wrote one reader. "Trying to contact Symantec has proved to be futile. When I log on to their website, I'm directed to their automated support where I get no help. After numerous tries at that, I went to their customer service page and found, finally, a way to send them an e-mail message. I received no reply. I tried again a number of times in past months with no results. I fail to understand how they can pull this and expect people to lay down and forget that a product they sold does not work and they refuse to address it."

Indeed, many Norton customers seem to find it virtually impossible to communicate with Symantec at all. "Is there any way at all to complain to Symantec, on line or by phone?" a reader wondered. "I recently tried to upgrade to the tune of $60 on my credit card -- and the damned program wouldn't install. Now I have no one to ask about how to do this -- extremely frustrating."

Those who did succeed in getting through to Symantec will often find -- as we've just been discussing concerning software publishers in general - that their only answer is to pay for the support. "We have used Norton Internet Security for the last six years on five computers," another reader wrote. "Last week when the Live Update box popped up on the screen and I clicked to order the update, the first bar froze about one-quarter of the way through. It did that twice more that day, so I was never able to install the update. The next morning I called their customer service number and, after instructing me how to uninstall the Live Update feature, the tech support person sent me an email about how to re-install it using their website. I could not re-install it. I called customer service again and another tech support person told me that I would have to pay $69.95 to remove about seven adware and spyware files before I could re-install Live Update. Since this was not a problem of my making, I've cancelled the service on all the computers in our office. I have loyally stayed with Symantec and Norton through the years and ignored all the free download offers, but their greediness ended that."

As we see every time we hold one of these little Symantec bashes, the problems for Norton AntiVirus customers often seem to revolve around the product's bug-prone product activation. "Not only did NAV keep asking me to activate, after some fixed number of time it decided I had activated too many times and I had to call tech support to fix the problem," wrote one reader. "But here's the kicker: when NAV decides I need to activate again, it shuts itself down! Now not only am I being hassled after paying for a product, but it's not protecting me as well. After two years of this runaround service, I switched vendors and haven't looked back. In a small victory, I convinced our internal systems support at work to switch away from NAV as well. With over 15,000 licensed desktops, their sales guys made a pretty big push. I provided our IT guys with the e-mails and web information I had received over the years and they decided to trust an actual user experience instead of the sales guy's pitch."

Of course, those who can't get answers from Symantec do have another alternative: choose from one of the many anti-virus products Gripe Line readers have recommended. "This last weekend my lady friend and I wasted a couple of hours 'upgrading' her Symantec Internet Security after she'd purchase a renewal," another reader wrote. "Pardon me if you've heard this before: Download, try to install ... oops, you have a previous version you must install first ... OK, uninstall ... oops, must use the Symantec uninstaller ... OK, install new software ... oops, virus definitions out of date, 'needs attention' ... OK, virus scan finally compete ... oops, attempts to update virus definitions failed. Now, in a normal world, one would contact the manufacturer and try to get information about how to solve the problem. Unfortunately, unless you have photographs of a Symantec board member having sex with a prune, you have no chance of getting their attention. I went through this crap a few months ago myself, so I no longer use Symantec for my Internet security. I've found a better product -- NOD32, which I went for after reading the reader responses to your survey from last August. It's unfortunate that so many people out there are still having their time wasted by Symantec. I would be very naive if I were to presume that this missive would result in any changes in the methodology within Symantec, but there will be no tear in my eye as their stock drops."

Moving my clients away from Symantec[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#1)
by wantobe on Tue Jun 06, 2006 at 03:03:54 AM PDT

Whenever a client calls with a slow computer or connection problem, the first two questions I ask is "did you reboot" and "do you have Symantec or McAfee system software." If the answer to the second question is "yes", I'll make a service call just to show them the difference between their machine's performance with the software enabled and without it. Then I explain how I can try to fix the problem while leaving the software installed, with no guarantees, or I can uninstall the software, install an antivirus product that works (and firewall and stuff, if they want), and it will only cost them an hour of my time.

It's very rare that the client doesn't take my suggestion and make the switch almost immediately.

Symantec...a downhill slide...[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#3)
by Anonymous User on Tue Jun 06, 2006 at 08:48:13 AM PDT

McAffee's been bad for years (since version 4 and possibly earlier).

As for Symantec, I think their slide started later. Their corporate AV product still works quite well, but the 2006 version of their home product is a dog. Norton Internet Security is unnecessarily complicated for the average user, and does so much at once that it's hard to figure out. Online help is reasonable if you're a techie, but not for the novice. Phone support is good if you're an enterprise customer, but lousy if you're a home one.

I've been moving home users I know over to the free version of Avast! Antivirus. It works extremely well, doesn't use a ton of CPU time or RAM, has a realtime scanner that does e-mail and files, an auto-update that works as well or better than Symantec, and finally, it's free. I've used AVG as well, but found that Avast's update component works better (even moreso for dialup users). In 2003/2004, I recommended Norton AV. It's no longer a product worthy of recommendation.

Hey Symantec...what happened to a lean-and-mean AV program that did what it needed to with a minimum of glitz, and a minimum of resources? You'd do well to learn from your competition...they're obviously hungrier for success than you are these days.

SAV Corporate[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#26)
by Anonymous User on Tue Jun 06, 2006 at 06:51:27 PM PDT

Upgrading SAV Corporate was a horror from V. 8 to 9. I have 10.1 but the migration as outlined by Symantec looks pretty gruesome. Why can't they simplify this? As far a performance, SAV has been quite reasonable. I'm still running NSW 2002 (with NAV disabled) on my workstations but was disappointed by everyone's comments about NSW 2006.

I'd never run Windows (FreeBSD rules), but for the clients of my computer ministry, I recommend:

 - AVG Antivirus (F-Prot for older machines)
 - ZoneAlarm (watching this one) and the last free version of TinyFirewall for older machines
 - AdAware and SpyBot S&D for spyware
 - ToniArts Easy Cleaner for various admin tasks

One thing I get to do at work is track our Veritas backup licenses. Symantec bought Veritas. Lovely.

Since then I have yet to have more than 1 of 20 licenses renew correctly. I have support dates that start in 2007. I have license packs with different support dates on every single one, even though they were ordered and renewed together.

We've tried everything possible to get these licenses to match up and I've pretty much given up completely. We have so many of them I know we're covered but it really screws up my tracking system to have 16 month gaps in the support dates.

Just say NO to bloatware[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#6)
by CzarKasm on Tue Jun 06, 2006 at 09:43:07 AM PDT

The last time I used NIS was the 2003 edition. It sucked the life (and performance) out of the computer. What a bloated piece of junk! I can only imagine how much worse it got with the activation nonesense. I then switched to F-Prot for a couple years. It was easy on the system, and not a resource hog. However, it lacked any antispyware functionality, so recently I switched to TrendMicro's product (antivirus / antispyware / firewall). It's a nice fully rounded product, and if you have multiple machines to protect, a 3 PC license is available.

I ran Nortn Internet Security on my home machine until two months ago. It expired, and I had pop up reminders every 20 seconds that my computer was at risk. I actually started to renew it, but after the fifth or so reminder interrupted my renewal process, i decided that Symantic really didn't need my business after all.

by Anonymous User on Tue Jun 06, 2006 at 11:30:11 AM PDT

I have NIS on one machine. The antivirus expired and and no longer operated. I wanted to just upgrade the NAV. No can do. You cannot update just one part of NIS - you have to uninstall NIS in install even a full retail version of AV. In short, antivirus is not part of Internet Security. The two are separate products and you cannot upgrade just part of Internet Security.

I use AVG at home myself and recommend it, though I have had to uninstall and reinstall a few times in the past year when the updates refused to update.

Still... and I know this comment will be swimming upstream, but my guess is that with the huge installed base of symantec AV products, there are a lot more satisfied Symantec customers than Avast, AVG, etc satisfied customers. Its just the way it goes.

There are too many alternative to have to put up with the arrogance of Symantec. I hope Microsoft cleans their clock. I realize that huge amounts of money smooth over a variety of ills, but I really wonder how someone like Norton feels knowing his name is on a product that has degraded into such mediocrity.

I remember old corporate slogans that said, "treat each job like you have signed your name to it". Norton actually has his name *on* a product; that was OK when it was a high-quality, well supported piece of software, but now?

I used to use Systemworks faithfully, until the day I needed support. After going through the same problems mentioned by others, I decided a change of scenery was in order. I switched to ZoneAlarm suite and it is the best change I've made in a long time. I have problems with the initial installation of ZoneAlarm and contacted their tech support and didn't have any problems getting answers quickly. In addition, their updates are smooth and yes, sometimes they have messed up, but ZoneAlarm is quick to fix it. After seeing what a company that has real tech support, I will never go back to Symantec. In fact I'm mad at them for buying and trashing Central Point software. Good Luck!

I have been a faithful user of Symantec / Norton software for 15+ years and have highly recommended them, at least until now. I have Internet Security 2005 on my XP box and needed support to get the Antivirus to not stall while scanning my email. Called them up last year on this, got an American support specialist, cleared it up quickly. Two months ago I installed Systemworks 2006. Antivirus intercepts email, will not scan it, just freezes and something is trying to use my floppy drive but what unknown. Call tech support, get someone from India clueless, as an I/S professional, I know more about the product than he. After doing the things he said I knew would not work, it didn't, he gave me a phone number to the next level, they didn't answer after 30 minute hold. Call back, no answer. Kicked off Systemworks 2006, had to remove and reinstall Internet Security 2005 and update same on dial-up (an 6 hour process total) and got me email back and no phantom floppy drive job. Tech support went from a eight or ten to a zero in a year. Now recommending my clients, friends, and associates not to buy Symantec. Out some $80 for a worthless product. Hope to cost Symantec much more.

Certainly anyone who has been breathing in the IT world for the past decade or so has known that anything tied into Norton/Symantic should be avoided.

I tried installing their AV product about 10 years ago - and after a frustrating week of no luck, with catch-22 situations like I had to install a 2 year old version (that was shipped to me) and then use it to update to the current version, I banned it from our company.

Things haven't changed. Same story as 10 years ago, just 10 years later.

As someone noted - Symantic purchased Veritas - which has me in fear of when I need to update any of our backup servers. Somehow I just don't have a warm fuzzy feeling about Symantic handling the upgrades gracefully, so I may be looking for a different backup solution soon. Too bad - I have 4 server licenses now - which put some amount of $$ into their pockets.

Oh - as far as Peter Norton - aside from a 20 year old photo of him on the boxes - do you REALLY think he has anything at all to do with the company besides collecting royalties? I don't think so..

I stopped dealing with Symantec when Norton Disk Defragger Ver 2 for NT was published. I have watched and listened ever since to all the screaming over P. Norton's once wonderful code get taken directly to HELL by Symantec. I seriously can't believe anyone buys any of their products now. Says a lot about the average person these days... All client machines that come with anything Symantec new are immdiately destroyed in a bonfire here. You might wish to give V-COM's System Suite a try - great utilities, excellent Spyware/AV and even a decent firewall. Have used it for many years (since Ver 3) with only one hand's worth of glitches in all that time.

Frequent online updates, excellent protection, and good reference material at www.sophos.com I was an early McAfee user, but fell away after Symantec took it over, and I've seen family members get into trouble relying on Symantec's Antivirus software. But I'm happy with our Sophos setup. Claire_T Vancouver Canada

After 15 years of running and recommending Norton, I, too, made the error of upgrading to NAV 2006. Along with losing six weeks of subscription, acquiring an extra icon in my already full system tray and a naggy extra menu on my desktop (which I finally managed to turn off), it incessantly wants me to turn off Windows auto-updates, even my innocuous "just tell me" option. Why is Symantec "LiveUpdate" OK to blindly run (can't even turn it off), but Windows Updates are bad? Even Microsoft gives you the option to turn off the nags. I'm going back to my 2003 and renewing, until I can research a decent replacement.

An excellent reason not to. It sounds like an addicting drug, for which the pusher oh-so-kindly provides a free sample and then demands money you probably can't afford. Better to go with one that's just plain free for personal use, no strings attached, like, oh say, AVG?

After Systemworks frogged up a couple PCs of mine almost beyond repair, and reading about Symantec support here and elsewhere (never have been able to get through to their tech support in a reasonable (< 1h) time) I dumped Symantec and was amazed how much faster my PCs run. AVG seems to do the trick along with Windows' firewall and some hardware firewalling. My employer (PC workstations numbering in the thousands) has recently switched from Symantec (alright it was to McAfee, wasn't my idea). Symantec may wake up soon and wonder, 'wha? what happened?'

...when *Peter Norton Is God* seemed a reasonable proposition -- those lifesaving early utilities! I still install the ancient Norton Commander for DOS first thing on any new computer, and use Total Commander as my XP shell, which I believe was developed from Nortons Commander for Windows, an excellent utility in its own right. Still using Symantec Q&A DOS database. Stayed with Norton/Symantec for many years out of loyalty, but but I've switched to AVG for antivirus and let XP firewall block the nasties. (Occasionally check with Steve Gibsons Shields Up and Pest Patrol to be sure.) Just too many hassles with the Norton stuff these days.

Is Peter Norton even remotely connected with this stuff anymore? I can't imagine he'd want his name on this crap Symantec has been producing recently, much less that he's making this stuff...

Peter Norton had a steller reputation for innovative computer tools several decades back. Unfortunately, not only did he sell his tools, he sold the rights to use his name as well. I'm sure he received a great deal of money for both. My question is, would he do it again, Was it worth it? Knowing what happened to his name should make everyone (companies included) think twice if this type of opportunity presents itself.

Do not buy anything Symantec![ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#27)

I stopped using Symantec products when they start requiring users to activate. So I was spared the problems many users were having with their buggy product activation. When other people ask me for advice I recommend them to dump Symantec and use AVG. I now use AVG AntiVirus only and just the Windows XP Firewall in SP2. I use Firefox to browse the internet. I also have a Mac mini and no antivirus package is necessary on it. Can browse the internet with Safari, Firefox and Camino with no worries.

Don't Use XP Firewall!![ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#32)

To all those who say they use the XP firewall, DON'T!! It doesn't even look at outgoing packets, so if you have somehow picked up an email zombie, or a Trojan horse sending your banking info to a server in Estonia, it can't do anything about it.

Zone Labs (makers of ZoneAlarm) have a very nice free (for home use) firewall you can get from their web site. Except that it nags you on install to use their paid version instead, it works very nicely. And, if you mess up and let Windoze Update install the Windows Genuine Advantage Verification Tool, you can tell ZoneAlarm to not let it contact the Internet. I have installed it on LOTS of PCs running XP with nary a problem.

I used norton 2002 system works for 4 years virtually with out trouble. Than norton said they were not supporting it any more. Than mysterious security holes came out for it and hole in other products. F.U.D to get people to update??? I help in security forums and see and know of many symantic problems. So i just switched from norton to nod32. its trouble free passed every test i could through at it in virtual machine. I don,t agree with microsucks getting into the anti virus anti malware game. For now they can keep shoddy work up and make money off of protecting you from their built in holes!!! They can turn a double profit on half the work.....

Just spent 5 hours installing Norton Internet Security 2006 and having all kinds of trouble getting Live Update to retrieve the latest virus definitions...followed all the "solutions" offered to fix errors (and restarted my computer a zillion times!), chatted with tech support who ran me through the same "solutions" the website offered and then told me to uninstall and reinstall...and guess what??? IT STILL DOESN'T WORK!!! I'm returning this product tomorrow, but what a HUGE waste of my evening!!! Heed the warnings to stay away from this product...! (Thanks to everyone for all the alternate product suggestions)

Anyone want to lay odds on whether next week's batch of gripes includes someone who is being denied a refund trying to return certain software that wouldn't work?
