Serious Reservations About Online Bargains

By Ed Foster, Section The Gripelog
Posted on Fri May 05, 2006 at 01:21:38 AM PDT

Not only do online shoppers continue to fall prey to sneakwrap scams, the shopping sites where they are at risk seem to be getting bigger and more prominent. That's certainly what one reader felt after his wife was victimized by the "Reservation Rewards" sting while shopping at SmartBargains.com.

"My wife is a customer of SmartBargains.com and has gotten some great values for the money there in the past," a reader wrote. "A few weeks ago, she spent about $160 on some merchandise. She clicks on a page on the SmartBargains website stating that she will get $15 off on her next visit. What she did not do is read the fine print, so she did not realize that to get the $15, she was agreeing to sign up with Reservation Rewards and pay $9.00 a month."

I first wrote about Reservation Rewards a few years ago, when they working with that epitome of sneakwrap scam outfits, Manay Software. (Thankfully, Manay appears to have finally gone out of business, at least under that name.) While there are many variations, the basic con game remains the same. The customer at an online shopping is lured by a "special offer' for a discount, cashback, or rebate that sounds like it's part of the trusted shopping site's promotion. Only by reading deep into the numerous sneakwrap "agreements" do customers discover they are actually signing up to have their credit or debit card charged $10 a month in perpetuity in exchange for vague promises of future benefits.

The reader's wife realized something was wrong when she started getting e-mails from Reservation Rewards. "The e-mail she got from Reservation Rewards had all her information including her debit card," the reader wrote. "The information had not been given to anyone but SmartBargains, and she was assuming it would be secure. NOT!"

The reader's wife immediately canceled her "membership" in Reservation Rewards and the reader plans to get his bank to reverse any charges that do come through. What he can't comprehend is why SmartBargains chooses to put its customers in position to be taken advantage of by such an outfit. "Much has been written on the Internet about Reservation Rewards doing this, so why would SmartBargains want their name on the same page as them?" the reader wondered. "If she were to use SmartBargains again, she'd have to worry about any offer of $15 off might be another attempt to rip her off. SmartBargains' customers shouldn't have to be looking over their should every time they make a purchase to see if a strange e-mail for they did not buy is going to suddenly show up."

Greetings From Charlotte, NC this 5th Day of April, 2008 via gripe2ed.com Same deal here with subject which is sonehow linked to PETCO.com as I recently made a purchase there for a friend in Delray Deach. Just a little 3 story Kitty Condo for her 2 Cats, I don't know how subject got in, but they used my credit card # given ONLY to PETCO, and I and sheer luck caught a $12 unauthorized use of my credit card aka additionally over the Internet. Today, April 5, 2008, I just got a USMail response from WebLoyalty.com concocted up a bunch of things I did to authorize same. Which was a rebuttle of my complaint on record with BBB in Wallingford, CT. The letter even mentioned: "OUR RECORDS SHOW Mr. Brown completed an online transaction at www.PETCO.com" What the hell are they doing in the middle of my supposed secure online transaction. Just Google the Subject as above Subject -writ and find 10-15 pages jammed full a big bunch say Very Uncomplimentary language, but nevertheless very fitting and accurate of the Subject. Those people have been at it for quite some time, and it's a wonder, a big wonder at that, why the likes of the FBI and IC3.gov haven't put these people away. Internet Fraud is only reason IC3.goc was created for. I will go to any court in this land to testify for sure the truth as to facts. I think that may be called compelling evidence, at the least. Well, I yaked too long, nite, nite, GeneB

This type of scam means that not only do you have to look over your shoulder if you do online commerce, but once you've even [i]once[/i] given out debit or credit card information online you have to [i]read all your spam[/i]. Because any email like your reader received that comes from a company you're not aware of ever having done business with and might clue you in in time is very likely to get deleted unread otherwise with all the other email that comes from companies you aren't doing business with...

HTML formatted means HTML, and there's no BBCode in HTML last I checked. ;) Also Auto Format translates text paragraphs to html paragraphs, whereas HTML format requires explicit < br > breaks, that's the main difference.

Somewhat on topic, ugh, I tried to get the $25 off from buy.com coupon by signing up with Great Fun, that was a dumb mistake. Buy.com didn't mention who it was for until it got to the sign-up page (or was it the confirmation? don't recall), they never sent the $25 coupon or the coupon book, even after saying they'd "resend", and their local deals all turned out to be at the crappy restaurants and stores anyway. :p

And I got one of those "cash me to sign up" checks, Pissed me off to the point that I wanted to burn it, especially since Chase is the only one that won't honor any opt-out requests anywhere.

Chase just sent me a check. This is not odd as I have a cashback card. The difference here was that this was not my cashback check but rather an offer to signup for a monthly service. The offer did say this in the fine print but since I expect checks from Chase, I easily could have missed this. I really think consumers need to actively engage in a war of forms and start making notes on their payments. See how this plays out.

I am really surprised that otherwise reputable companies like SmartBargains and Staples (and others I can't recall at the moment) offer something sleazy like this as part of their websites. You would certainly not expect a place like Staples to intentionally trick their customers into signing up for something. And the link on the order confirmation page certainly makes it sound like a great deal.

Now, I know people who have signed up for this place and remembered to cancel and it turned out to be a great deal for them. But I'm sure far more get sucked into something they were not expecting.

sneaky "agreements"[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#9)
by Anonymous User on Tue May 09, 2006 at 11:11:42 AM PDT

Bought something at a Best Buy a while ago. Cashier asked me whether I'd prefer to receive a free subscription to People or SI. Didn't really want either, but went with SI. Started receiving the magazine sporadically. Then I received a notice that my renewal had been charged to my credit card!

I called the company and asked them to cancel the subscription and refund the money. They told me they couldn't process a refund, which I know is utter BS, but I decided that, knowing how much time and effort would have to go into retrieving the money, I'd just consider it my own personal stupidity tax, and try to remember the old adage, TANSTAAFL.

by Anonymous User on Tue May 09, 2006 at 11:58:20 AM PDT

I understand the reluctance to spend time on what probably doesn't amount to a lot of money, but that's exactly what those companies count on.

A threat to go to your local state attorney general might have made the magazine more cooperative. If not, you could always do a charge-back through your CC company.

The problem is, every time one of us gets lazy about this, those sleazy companies win and get rewarded for being sleazy. So the behavior won't change.

State attorney's general. NOW.

That was fraud. They said it was "free", but then charged you? Dispute the charge and report it as fraud. If they said you "renewed" something but you never "renewed", ditto. They can't renew for you; that is also fraud. Same as if they sent me something out of the blue along with the bill for it, and then refused to let me return it unopened without paying.

Got the same offer from Best Buy but for Time magazine. All the cashier said was they were giving out free 3 month subscriptions. No mention that it would turn into a paid subscription after that. Luckily, I read the receipt when I got home and found it would morph into a paid subscription. Tried to cancel on-line like they said I could but no way. But they got my email address from that. Called the next day and canceled without any hassels. Started getting "offers" to renew so I put them on the block list. As for Best Buy, they've lost my (considerable) business. Take that you scoundrels!

I'm a cashier at Best Buy. The vast majority of us hate offering magazines as much as everyone else hates hearing it everytime. Please complain to your local Best Buy and tell them exactly why they're losing your business, because that's the only way to get through to them. Best Buy gets something like $10 from every sign-up, and stores are rated based on their performance in this area, so it's not going to stop on it's own.
