SanDisk Leaves Customers Sans Rebate

By Ed Foster, Section The Gripelog
Posted on Mon May 01, 2006 at 09:31:17 AM PDT

In my ever-growing collection of reader complaints about deadbeat rebates, I've noticed one name surfacing with great regularity in recent months. SanDisk, maker of memory products, seems to have a strange lack of memory when it comes to fulfilling the promises of its rebate offers.

"I bought a SanDisk flash memory from MicroCenter who printed out a rebate form to send in," wrote one reader. "The rebate was rejected by the rebate processor as being outside the purchase dates which it was clearly not or MicroCenter would not have given me the rebate form. SanDisk promotes these rebates as a way of increasing sales. Since I felt cheated, I now avoid the SanDisk brand when I purchase any products that they make."

Even when SanDisk acknowledges it made a mistake in processing a customer's rebate, it often still forgets to send the check. "SanDisk Corporation admits their errors on my rebate for an item purchased, but still does not send the rebate after many months," another reader wrote. "I believe SanDisk rebates are fraud, period."

A certain amount of forgetfulness seems to be built into SanDisk's online rebate tracking system as well. "I bought a SanDisk USB drive because there was a $40 mail-in rebate," wrote another reader. "When I went online to check the status, I got an 'invalid receipt error.' I called SanDisk and was told it's only a $20 rebate. No more CompUSA or SanDisk for me."

But some readers suspect that rebate offers don't move through the system at all unless you check up on SanDisk frequently. "I purchased a 1-GB SD memory card from SanDisk, against my better judgment, because of a very good rebate offer," one reader wrote. "I mailed all the necessary items in early January and promptly forgot about the offer. I happened to come across my copies of the documents in late March and decided to visit the rebate website. It actually showed my request in the system, with a status of 'Pending,' but gave no further information. I checked again the next day to find the request in a 'Check Approved' status, but now with a 'pending' check mail date." The reader plans to continue to nudge the process along by frequent visits to the website, but can't help but think it an odd coincidence that after 12 weeks in limbo, it moved along right after he checked up on it. Had I not inquired, my request may still be languishing in that netherworld of 'pending.'"

One thing SanDisk apparently doesn't forget is to spam you after you fill in your e-mail address on the rebate form. "I just got an email with 'special offers' from SanDisk," another reader wrote. "It states, 'This email was sent to you because you expressed an interest in receiving special offers from SanDisk.' The only interest I have ever expressed in SanDisk is just to receive a $20 rebate on a card I purchased five months ago. The rebate documents required me to submit an email, supposedly to be contacted if there was a problem with the rebate. Well, I got the rebate; but for SanDisk it means I also have now opted in to receiving marketing material from them."

In my 20 years of filing rebates, I've only had two not show up. One from a company that went bankrupt, and the other from SanDisk. I dutifully tracked the rebate through their website, was told it had been sent, but of course, it didn't show up. They're on my 'never buy again' list now. Just in case Sandisk is reading this, and this is not how you want your customers treated, change your fulfillment partners now.

SanDisk rebate Scam. This is blatantly a scam. I purchased a mini sd card from Circuit City with a $20.00 rebate. I followed all the instructions and mailed the rebate in March of 2006. It is August now, and still no rebate. I phone ScamDisk and the first rep. Brittany states that the computers are undergoing their daily updates (This mind you is during business hours which I find extremely difficult to believe) please call back in two hours. I wait three hours and phone back and get Lauren. lauren states that there is no record of my rebate searching by my name and address. OK, how do I get the rebate I ask, I'll enter your information in the system and we'll get is processed for you. Great (progress), now "In order to finish the processing I have to get a supervisor to approve the rebate, however currently there is a 30 minute wait and we are not allowed to keep customers on hold for that long, I suggest you call back tomorrow" Growing frustrated I agree. Call back tomorrow after incredible hold times I get Lauren again. I give her my information she states the wait time for the supervisor is 3 minutes (kewl) progress, ut not quite. the call is disconnected. Now I'm getting pissed (my wife is laughing) but it's principal now and it is becoming very clear that all they are trying to do is see who gives in first (a battle of attrition) that I refuse to lose. I phone back and get lovely Brittany who remarkably tells me that the rebate is showing in their system as being sent on June 1, 2006 but it was returned by the Post Office (you see whats happening very clearly now). Now I'm fuming because miraculously the rebate is in their system. I am assured that the rebate will be processed within 30 days and I am provided a rebate tracking number (this is insane). I will be taking this up with my local and state government and I will be litigating this scam with SanDisk.

I had the same thing happen to me today. I went to Best Buy to complain. The manager dialed customer service for Best Buy, handed me the phone and walked away. I am now being told that if I fax my rebate to 1-866-843-9980 that I will receive my rebate in 4-6 weeks. I have already waited 3 months. I am not holding my breath. I am going to report this to every agency possible. I will even file a suit in small claims court if necessary and bring a copy of every complaint regarding this matter that I can find on the internet. I guess it is time for a class action lawsuit.

Same experience with an added twist after buying 2GB card at Future Shop in Canada and submitting claim to Canadian claim center: "web-rebates.com" on 11 October showed my rebate submission as "check approval processed", two days later no trace any more. After sending email to web-rebates, received polite but totally useless response, to resubmit with all documents to the Arizona address. Conclusion: NEVER AGAIN SANDISK - rebate offers or not. It is not worth the time and effort.

...there's a way around these rebates.

Simply go to the manager of the store (or to the business counter) and explain that you have a PO box (I do), and that rebates can't be sent to PO boxes, according to the terms.

Then... ask for the rebate at the register. If you don't get it, politely walk out.

Simple, and it works when I've tried it at CompUSA, much to their credit.

Also, they'll be gently "reminded" that we all hate rebates.

What an excellent idea. I will try that at Office Depot since we don't have a CompUSA here.

I'm never buying from Sandisk again[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#4)
by jmw on Tue May 02, 2006 at 11:29:51 AM PDT

I just don't think they're an honest company.  I bought replacement caps for a USB drive through their online store.  They showed backordered at first (apparently lots of the crappy things get lost) but I went ahead and ordered, thinking I'd get some when they were in stock.

So I didn't think about it for a while, and FIVE MONTHS later I still hadn't received them.  So I e-mailed them. I got a note saying my order would ship out that day.

That was eight months ago.  I never received the order, but they didn't have a problem charging my credit card for it.

So it's not just rebates, folks.

The rebate did arrive[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#5)
by Anonymous User on Tue May 02, 2006 at 11:44:32 AM PDT

In fairness to SanDisk, I am the purchaser of the 1GB memory quoted in Ed's article, and the rebate did arrive about two weeks after being "nudged" by my visit to the web site. It did take several days before the rebate moved from Check Approved to Check Mailed status, but the actual delivery was timely. Total time from purchase to rebate? 3 months! So my better judgement is still to avoid anybody's rebate come-on, be very leery of SanDisk, and only purchase with rebate if the deal is still reasonable at full price. I do like the PO Box idea. Any idea how the merchant covers the rebate at the register? Do they eat it themselves, or are they able to pass the cost on to the manufacturer?

by Anonymous User on Tue May 02, 2006 at 12:25:49 PM PDT

I have had problems with rebates in the past. One time, I went back to the retail store and talked to the manager, and they gave me the rebate right then and there. So, it works, when you talk to a real human they want to make things right. I recently purchased a SanDisk USB key at Staples. At Staples, you don't have to fill-out any rebate forms, they do all the paperwork for you. I received the rebate in a timely fashion with no extra effort. SanDisk and CompUSA[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#8)
by bobackerman on Tue May 02, 2006 at 04:29:54 PM PDT

It sounds like SanDisk is using the same rebate company as CompUSA.

A few years ago I bought a wireless card and a wireless router for my laptop at CompUSA. CompUSA was offering a large rebate for both and on their sign it said, "Allow 4 to 6 weeks for rebate processing."

So I purchased the products, filled out the cards, carefully copied them and mailed them in. After a few weeks I checked on line. "Processing Rebate" it said. But, my mailbox was full of stuff from all kinds of company traced back to this rebate company.

I checked every few days and check. After 8 weeks I tried calling the rebate company, with a number buried in the web site, and waited for more that 30 minutes on hold a couple of times.

Then I contacted CompUSA. Even though the rebate sign in the store (boy I wish I took a picture of that) said it was CompUSA doing the rebate, CompUSA repeatedly told me that CompUSA does not manage the rebates and has no involvement in the process.

Hmmm. The rebates print on CompUSA register tape, and advertised with CompUSA labeled signs.

After 12 weeks my rebate checks arrived. I cashed them promptly and I will NEVER shop at CompUSA again.

By the way, when they changed their name from SoftWareHouse to CompUSA, back in the early 90s, I worked for them and rebates were handled quickly and promptly.

Now, I don't do CompUSA and I don't do rebates. I just thought of something. By the way a lot of stores treat their customers, my list of places not to shop is getting pretty big.

What ever happened to real Customer Service?

CompUSA[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#9)
by Anonymous User on Tue May 02, 2006 at 05:18:57 PM PDT

I no longer buy stuff at CompUSA because of the way I have been treated there. However, their shrinking inventory selection is still pretty good so, for particular items, I like to look over that item in the store and perhaps get help from one of their more experienced sales people...and then buy the item on-line. I have used that buying technique for up-scale printers and monitors where I needed to see print samples or tinker with user setups before I could make a good selection. I buy a lot of computer equipment and supplies on line now which works far, far better overall. So thanks CompUSA for just being there.

I could say the same thing about Sears where I used to buy a lot of stuff but now only buy the occasional hand tool. Good customer service has become a rare occurance these days. I have learned to go only to those who provide it. I am shopping more and more on-line to fill the void created by my local merchants who no longer demonstrate that they want my business.

I have always made soft copies of all of the forms involved in a rebate and if I do not get satisfaction in the time alloted I file a complaint with the BBB and the State Attorney General. I make sure to include this information in an email sent to the rebate company along with the soft copy of the forms. This has changed a rebate company's repsonse from receipt missing or not filled out correctly to the check is in the mail. The State Attorney General usually will not pursue this sort of fraud though. Unless you live in New York and can get Elliot Spitzer fired up.

Getting Their Attention[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#11)
by Anonymous User on Tue May 02, 2006 at 08:21:40 PM PDT

From past experience, some of the culprits of which we speak read this column. Some of them respond positively when loud voices complain, especially when those voices call for a campaign to effectively boycott their company. The MBA types in many of these companies have been universally schooled to squeeze every so-called extra cent out of operating costs. But they soon learn that customer service, contrary to the teachings of their greed-motivated, value-engineering focused MBA education, is in fact an important contribution to positive bottom line profitability of the company. It is impossible for a company to exist and then to thrive if no one buys their products. Money talks, eventually even to Microsoft, and all of these greedy organizations fear down to their bones any attempt by their customer base to somehow bond together into a united force against them. (This is a major motivation for software companies to prevent the publishing of bench mark tests of their software.) This column can be one of those bonding forces that has the opportunity to do a lot of good to the entire computer industry.

Shop at stores but buy online[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#13)
by Anonymous User on Wed May 03, 2006 at 05:16:04 AM PDT

This "technique" is probably partially to blame for the reduction in customer service and the reduction in the number of stores lately. You use up the retailers' "customer service" time by shopping in their store and then don't pay for it by buying the product there. That's unethical and self-defeating.

[ Parent | Reply to This ]

Unethical? NOT!![ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#15)
by Anonymous User on Wed May 03, 2006 at 09:19:55 AM PDT

I am a feature shopper who wants products that provide particular features I like to use. Customer service is also a primary consideration. Price is secondary. Why would I buy from any company that refuses to support what they sell? Or takes my extended warranty money and then refuses to honor their commitment to support the warranty? Or refuses to accept my money for payment at their cash register just because it is in the form of a traveler's check?

When I need to buy technical books, my first stop is always Amazon. Why? Because Amazon is unique in providing reviews on books by readers which are often extremely helpful to know which particular book covers the subject best. Does that obligate me to purchase the book from Amazon? Absolutely not! Any particular book may be less exexpensive at Barnes & Noble either online or in the store.

I use the same process process for computer equipment. My first online stop is usually PCConnection. Why? Their online catelogue contains over 30,000 products and I can quickly narrow my selections down to a select few.

If it is a major cost item, I may check out online services at CompUSA, Staples, OfficeMax, Office Depot, Circuit City, and Best Buy to see which one offers the best deal. Then I will check out the manufacurer's web site especially for feature options that may not be available from ANY retailer whether online or brick and mortar. Each of these suppliers competes against each other for my money. If they choose to conduct their business such that they are no longer competitive, that is not my problem, it is theirs. Just because they have chosen to be uncompetitive in the past for a particular item does not mean that they will be uncompetitive in the future for another item. When I shop at CompUSA to get my hands on a particular item to check it out, CompUSA is competing once again but I am under absolutely no obligation to spend my money there if they choose to be uncompetitive in any way that is important to me. CompUSA has offended my so many times in the past over some really stupid CompUSA policies and procedures that it is highly unlikely that I will buy anything from them again. That does not mean that I will cut off my nose to spite my face by not giving them an opportunity to sell to me in the future. They have something that is important to me that noone else offers and that something is hands-on opportunity to try out a product. By the same token, I am under no obligation to spend my money at any online store just because I accessed their site.

There is nothing unethical about being a wise shopper. If enough people shop at CompUSA and then do not buy their products, then wise CompUSA management might want to know why that is happening. If their top management chooses to capture the fact that many people are shopping their stores without spending their money there, if they are wise they will want to profile the people who are doing that and learn why. It costs CompUSA or any retailer a lot of advertising money to bring people into their stores. If people take the time to come into the stores and then choose to not buy, that advertising money is wasted. It is NOT the customer's fault that CompUSA policies and procedures have been chosen such that they drive customers away.

SanDisk: OK, IOMagic: NG[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#12)
by bulova on Tue May 02, 2006 at 10:45:32 PM PDT

Purchased a SanDisk 1GB SD card at Staples. Came at a sale price that was nice enough, and there was an additional $8 rebate attached. It might be the Staples "Easy Rebate" process, or that Parago (the fulfillment center) is getting it right, but no problemo!

Purchased an IOMagic 16x Dual Layer internal DVD+/- RW at Circuit City on February 11. Came with a $10 CC rebate (got it within 6 weeks) and a $30 "manufacturer's" rebate, fulfilled by rebateservices.com. Sent the forms in postmarked 2/17.

I can't even get the status of my submission from rebateservices.com. They keep giving me some malarkey that the "mail" goes to some fulfillment center and they get no information back until the whole batch is completed...which they say will be 10 weeks after the offer period deadline of March 13!

This is the first ever rebate offer for which I applied, that I consider "troublesome." Every, and I mean every, other time, any problems have been addressed satisfactorily, and rebates applied for have been received. Maybe, until now, I've been lucky.

Rebate sizes[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#18)
by Fushigi on Thu May 04, 2006 at 06:20:26 AM PDT

I don't buy products if the price is only reasonable because of a large rebate. However, if the price is already reasonable and a small to mid-size rebate makes it even better, then it can induce me to buy.

For instance, buying a $350 LCD monitor that needs a $70 rebate to make the price palatable (end price: $280) is not the way to win me as a customer. But lower the purchase price to $310 and make the rebate smaller ($20) and I'm more likely to bite even though the net price is actually higher. Of course, the ideal would be to buy the monitor at $280 w/o rebate.

The larger the rebate the larger the risk and I don't care to take on any more risk than necessary.

The rebate fulfillment industry is the source of this problem. Their less-than-ideal treatment of their client's customers is causing their clients to lose future revenue.

product rebate = no sale[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#19)

I've finally taken to boycotting all product offerings where rebates are offered. I find this very frustrating and hard to do, because sometimes the items are things that I really want to buy. I am also simultaneously contacting the sales departments for the manufacturer of products where a rebate is being offered. This is one of the letters that I've sent... ---------------- I've been considering purchasing a xxxx for a long time. Recently I saw that a rebate is available from your company in the amount of $100.00 Unfortunately, I've had several problems with receiving rebates from various companies over the last few years. In fact, I've lost hundreds of dollars in non-honored rebates from manufactures. I've found theat rebate centers are often not responsive to my resending photocopies of my rebates and many times will simply never reply at all. I suspect that these rebate centers may not be playing fair with consumers. I have also have considered that mail fruad or loss may also be a factor. Since the rebate center you are using does not offer a physical street address, I am not able to send my letters certified mail through a notary public mailing service. Therefore; I am sorry that I cannot buy your product at this time. Presently I am boycotting all products with these rebates and I am actively encouraging friends and family to do the same.

Eh? How is the spelling relevant? It's not an ad, it's an ultimatum. It could say "if u dont stop the shit tricks w/rebaits i will never buy your crap and ill tell my friends to stay away too" and it would still convey the appropriate threat. The danger is if people swear off rebates, then bite anyway when a particularly juicy one is dangled in front of them with only the barest hint of steel showing through.

Because if you spell like a 12 yr old, you won't be taken seriously in the business world.

If you spell a bomb threat like a 12 year old, you will, so why not a loss-of-customer threat? :)

In reading your complaints about the shonky Sandisk rebates, I am amused that some of you take the time to be-little a person due to their poor spelling etc. Give me an honest person who cannot spell, and I will pick them over a smooth talking, high fallutin' spin doctor, who has a way with words that may still be shite in practice. Are you as clever as you make out, or do you just want to appear a cut above the rest of ???? The Phoenix

Positive experience w/ SanDisk[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#23)
by kamnet on Wed May 10, 2006 at 03:15:07 PM PDT

In March I purchased two SanDisk memory cards through Staples, both cards had rebates attached. Staples notified me when SanDisk had recieved my rebates (submitted online) and then SanDisk notified me a few days later when my rebate checks would be sent out. I expected a minimum of 2-3 months to process the rebate, I received my rebates in four weeks.

Staples was also very good about getting me my other rebates in a very timely manner.

Sandisk rebate, on week 7[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#24)
by Anonymous User on Fri May 12, 2006 at 05:59:12 PM PDT

After getting ripped off by a CompUSA rebate (*after* the FTC penalized them for their fraudulant rebate practices) I don't do rebates - except through Staples. On 3/16/2006 I purchased a Sandisk 512MB SD card from Staples and went through their Easy Rebate Program. 7 weeks later the status is still "Processing". I haven't had any problems with other rebates through Staples so I may just stay clear of Sandisk rebates in the future. -Chris Bennet, Nashua NH

I propose we rename the company, by force if necessary, to "Sandsik". :)

SanDisk Rebate[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#28)
by Anonymous User on Tue Jul 04, 2006 at 10:23:58 AM PDT

I also have a comment that after getting off the phone with SanDisk, I looked at my girlfriend and said this is such a scam. When I sent in my rebate I did everything they asked. Sent a copy of the sales slip using best buys extra copy that is made just for rebates, the UPC. When I filled on the rebate form I decided I would use one of those stickers mailing addresses that I have and then just writing my Phone number in the space provided. Somehow the card saying that my rebate was incomplete made it to my house even though they butcher every part of my name and address. Jones was spelled Joner my first name got an I and few extra letters. The View in my street address be became Vaiw and the Lane became LD. All this from a type perfect sticker... wow I think someone needs to take 5th grade typing classes again. Well I called and the card said it was missing the UPC. I told them I taped the UPC to the sales slip and highlighting around it in pink hightligher do it stood out. She said actualy it was not rejected for the UPC rather that it was not the original sale slip but instead a copy. I said but it came right from the Besy Buy... right out of there registers. She said that she would be let it go this time and fullfil my rebate... I sure hope she typed my address in correct this time

First the rebate is returned as no such address, so I call and they give me a totally different address. 2 months later I get a card saying that it was declined because purchase was made outside the qualifying period. NO WAY I double checked everything was in order so I call and the girl asks me question like when did you buy it how much was the rebate, what was it. THE SHE SAYS no problem rebate is on its way. So I ask what was wrong and she said somebody mistyped when my rebate was processed. Bottom line part of the rebate is to make copies and call when it doesnt come, otherwise they pocket the money.

I just received a SanDisk rejecton postcard for out of qualifying date reasons. I called the number on the card, gave them my info, and it turns out that I received the postcard in error. My check is on its way... If you receive one of these notices, dispute it kindly. Be firm but not defensive or accusatory. They know they're being watched now, so if your rebate was valid, you will get it (hopefully) Thanks Ed for getting the ball rolling.
