A Proprietary Charge For Motorola

By Ed Foster, Section The Gripelog
Posted on Fri Apr 07, 2006 at 09:07:16 AM PDT

Standards often evolve in the marketplace because they make things easier on the customer. That's why one reader was particularly irate to discover that Motorola is messing with an emerging standard -- one that it helped create -- by requiring a Motorola-brand car charger be used with his new Motorola cell phone.

"It's great that manufacturers of portable devices are increasingly using a standard charger - one that can be plugged into a mini-USB connector like on the Blackberry," the reader wrote. "This means you can carry just one charger that you can use with your cell phone, GPS, etc. But now Motorola, which has been using the mini-USB chargers for many of its cell phones, has added a new wrinkle with its V325 phone. It has some sort of detection circuit that prevents a non-Motorola charger from working."

The Motorola phone comes with an AC charger, of course, so the reader did not discover the problem until he tried to re-charge it in his car. "I was using a generic USB charger that works with the Blackberry and lots of other devices," the reader wrote. "A message on the phone said 'Unauthorized Charger' and it wouldn't work. I've tried several other chargers with specs that are identical to the USB-type car charger Motorola sells, and they all produce the same 'Unauthorized Charger' message."

The reader doesn't resent the $30 Motorola wants for its car charger as much as he dislikes the idea of having to carry different chargers for different devices. After all, if he had been aware that the Motorola V325 had this charger-authorization technology, he simply would have a chosen a different phone - maybe even a different Motorola phone -- that actually supports the mini-USB standard. "Motorola has actually been one of the leaders in using these widely-available chargers with the RAZR and other models," the reader noted. "That makes it all the more frustrating they would take this approach to force us to buy only Motorola-brand chargers."

Say "No" to proprietary accessories[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#1)

Now that I have a range of devices that all charge from mini-USB there's no way I'll go back and use devices that are locked to the manufacturers accessories. I'll boycott products/manufacturers who try this shabby trick.

If Motorola want me to shell out for their charger they'd better make it smaller, lighter, cooler, or cheaper than the alternatives.

Anyone who knows anything about LiIon batteries and battery safety should applaud Motorola for this approach. What they are actually saying is that in order to safely use the product without hazard they have designed a system which includes the battery the phone and the charger to the highest safety standards and that they are trying to keep you from blowing up. You're welcome Dolphin 1

You either missed the entire point of the article or work for Motorola. Motorola has either taken a standard and bastardized it for themselves (i.e. the phone uses a higher voltage, amps, etc.) or has made the standard incompatible (i.e. same voltage, amps, etc. but requiring an extra chip). USB IS a standard, regulating things like voltage, etc. It's just a cheap trick to make a buck.

Motorola Charger & Safety[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#10)
by Anonymous User on Tue Apr 11, 2006 at 12:16:40 PM PDT

First, let me mention up front that I do NOT work in the cellular industry and I DO NOT work for Motorola. I do, however, work in an electronics-based tech industry where I have a fair amount of exposure to Li-Ion battery technologies and consumer products that use these batteries.

I have had first-hand exposure to the special Motorola version of the Mini-USB connection used on phones such as the Razr V3 & Slvr L7 and Pebl U6 models. I am convinced that safe battery charging IS the primary motivation behind what Motorola has done in this matter.

If you doubt this, use a search engine to look for information about "Li-Ion Rapid Disassembly". Ignorance is bliss. If you don't understand the risks you cannot appreciate what you are being protected from.

In this case, my personal opinion is that I can fault Motorola for using an industry-standard connector in a non-standard configuration (which confuses and sets-up unrealized expectations) but not the motivation behind their charger design.

Motorola is just covering their butt over Li-ion charging problems cause by cheap chargers - and probably batteries. Unfortunately, they took a very stupid approach. Several chip companies have recently introduced specific power control chips that go in the phone - where they belong - to handle unsafe chargers and pirate batteries. With these in the phone out-of-spec chargers and batteries become a moot point. My feelings on the matter - if a company has a dumb product, don't buy it!

use of standards that are not standards[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#18)
by Anonymous User on Wed Apr 19, 2006 at 07:23:54 AM PDT

Typical motorola 1. take an standard, incorporate into product. It good marketing. 2. come up with some reason to change standard (safety is alway a good one 'cos no-one aver disagrees with that) 3. Change the standard to prevent anyone else producing something using the standard. 4. Charge huge amounts of money for a standard that is no longer standard, but still claim you meet the standard (still good marketing) For those who shrill that Motorola is only doing it for our safety ('think of the children'), the andwer is very simple, If a standard is not good enough, DON'T USE IT.

Standards[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#19)
by Anonymous User on Wed Apr 26, 2006 at 01:59:37 AM PDT

You are supposed to design the phone to the standard - not the otherway arround. GM would prefer I bought the tires for my car from them, and they are certainly capable of making possibly valid safety arguments for that. But they would be in deep do do, if I could not pick tires of varying costs and quality from a variety of manufacturers.
Basically the phone should recharge correctly and safely with any cable conforming to the standard. In fact it should work safely with anything even close to conforming to the standard. And I thing we all know that Motorola has good enough engineers to do so without altering the cost or usability of the product.
Safety is important, but it is not an excuse for ignoring standards.

I have the same issue with my V325 phone, the funny thing is that what ever firmware they used to detect an un-authorized charger in many cases provides an un -authorized charger error when I use the Motorola charger that was provided, which was the case as soon as I took it out of the box.

I am on my 2nd V325 and about to get my 3rd. My phone had charging issues from Day 1 that eventually esclated to the point that it wouldnt charge at all. Verizon moaned and groaned and was incredibly rude and then finally replaced it. But not the battery, only the phone, which is apparently their new policy. Well 1 month after getting it replaced it refuses to charge again. I think I'm gonna just ebay a differnt phone rather than try to deal with Verizon again.

An even bigger issue ...[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#4)
by DatabaseMX on Sun Apr 09, 2006 at 11:25:50 AM PDT

There is even a bigger issues with the manufacturers and carriers. Dropped calls, spotty reception and non-user friendly menu systems continue to be the norm ... in favor of somewhat useless (in my opinion) 'features' ... ALL geared toward upping the recurring monthly cost of operation.

I have virtually no interest in watching a 2 minute NASCAR clip or a segment of American Idol or browsing the internet on a 1"x1" screen. Wherein a camera *might* be occasionally useful, I would gladly trade that feature for core technology and user interface improvements! Last I checked, even if I take a picture with my Moto E815, I cannot directly download it onto my PC ... I have to EMAIL it to myself ... of course using up minutes! And don't you just love it when you're driving along ... talking ... and suddenly realize the 'call ended' (read:dropped) TWO minutes ago!!

As far as the proprietary accessory issue, possibly the one post is correct ... in that it is being done truly for safety reasons ... I sure don't know.

"Last I checked, even if I take a picture with my Moto E815, I cannot directly download it onto my PC ... I have to EMAIL it to myself ... of course using up minutes!"
I have a Motorola V635. I have the following options to quickly get pictures (or movies, ringtones, or any other file) off (or onto) my phone for free:

1) Bluetooth
2) data cable
3) trans-flash card (remove it and put it into a card reader attached to a PC)

It sounds like you either chose to go with a provider who removes/restricts the features of their cell phones (like Verizon), or you did not choose the proper phone to meet your needs. In this case, however, I'm not sure the fault is Motorola's.

In all fairness... I've run into the exact problem mentioned in this artcle with the Motorola V3 RAZR. Luckily, my V635 doesn't use mini-USB and generic chargers work just great (such as the quality Belkin one I picked up for work).

Verizon[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#7)
by sremick on Mon Apr 10, 2006 at 04:49:22 PM PDT

That could be part of it. Verizon is well-known for disabling or removing stock features from phones (especially Motorola's) that would be convenient for users, forcing the customer to do things in a less-convenient way that instead generates more revenue for Verizon. The V710 saga is one particularly well-known example, which resulted in a class-action lawsuit and settlement.

I specifically chose a carrier that wasn't Verizon so I could use all the features of my cell phone. I didn't even get the phone through them, but ordered the one I wanted off the internet.

And that was one of the ones I was leaning towards. Now, I don't have anything else I charge in the car, and I don't want a camera, txt, pix, movies, tv, or web on my phone, so my ancient Startac is still working for me. But I broke off the antenna when it fell from the second floor balcony to the parking lot (it still works, but I get a bar less signal) One more thing to investigate, all over again. -Divinar

Ah the famous broken Startac antenna. Been there, done that. When I was in charge of our cell phone unit, I ended up buying generic antennas in bulk. They were around $5 each vs the $20 it cost at the cell phone store. You can still buy them for $5 on the web and they're easy to replace as I recall.

I still love my old Startac the best of all phones I've had. Instead of getting a new phone because of the antenna, you can replace the antenna, even with a flashing one: http://www.aps-cellular-accessories.com/index.html No, I am not connected with them in any way, but have ordered many flashing antennas from them, including for the Startac. You'll be disappointed with the modern phones compared to the old reliable Startac. Don't go there!

USB Charging[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#14)
by Anonymous User on Wed Apr 12, 2006 at 03:11:38 PM PDT

Battery safety is important. So is customer satisfaction. The best products are safe and have happy customers.

Motorola has chosen to link their car USB charger technology to the phone. They have barstardized the USB standard.

Motorola could have chosen to implement appropriate battery safety technology in the phone but for some reason chose not to. There might have been technical issues (space, power limits etc). The trade they made impacts customer satisfaction. Most users do not fully appreciate the technology in a phone today. But users do expect things that look like they should plug together to work together.

As a business traveller who is always looking to reduce the amount of electronic junk I carry, and knowing this "feature" of the motorola package, it would not make my shortlist.

I can see another after market opportunity. How long do you think it will take some one to implement whatever handshaking the charger does with the phone to come along with a new product? Perhaps a truely universal, Motorola/Blackberry/GPS/whatever compatible USB charger? Or a software mod in the phone firmware?

Poor choices Motorola, lost sales. But perhaps opportunity for others.

JTF

I recently purchased one of these Verizon branded razor phones. Sure enough, my car charger for my Pharos pocket PC cannot be used for the phone. I do not think Motorola had anything but profit$ motive. The USB interface provides a "standard" voltage. Also, the Motorola Razor does not complain a bit if you plug it to a powered USB port on your computer. In fact, according to the Motorola manual, it is a "recommended" option. So, the stories about Motorola putting some safety logic in their chargers are more than likely to be BALONEY! All they had is probably a simple ID. I am quite sure some one could develop a hack, or a compatible charger but then again DMCA is like the sword of Damokles hanging by the hair who attempts to do it...

Not just the USB chargers involved[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#22)

I have been a happy Verizon/Moto v60s owner for 2 years... and been using a Belkin branded car charger w/ replaceable fuse that I picked up for $12 some time back.  Now I just switched to a Moto e815 and it uses the same older style Moto power connector as the v60 series. But lo-and-behold... the Belkin charger yields an "Unable to Charge" error message.   If I plug the v60 back in, it works perfectly.

One of the reasons I picked the e815 over the Razr or a competing brands phone was that I knew I wouldn't have to go get a new car charger, and that I could use my iGo Juice charger w/o buying a new tip.  I haven't tried the iGo yet, but I'm getting a sinking feeling it won't work for me either.

Mini-USB should define a standard voltage and current. I find it annoying that I have a BlackBerry, V3 RAZR, and Garmin Nuvi, all of which have Mini-USB charging ports, that I need to carry different chargers for some of them. By the way, how come these all charge fine from my laptop when connected via USB?

Motorola is a complete joke, requiring us to buy their chargers. The USB standard is exactly that. STANDARD. I cannot even plug their God damn USB cord into a Sprint issued rechargeable battery pack designed to charge their phone!!! FUCK MOTOROLA. I AM NEVER BUYING ONE OF THEIR PRODUCTS AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
