Getting Dell Media Becomes Endurance Test

By Ed Foster, Section The Gripelog
Posted on Fri Mar 24, 2006 at 08:48:09 AM PDT

As we know, it can be awfully hard to get some computer manufacturers to give you media for the software that comes with your system. But one reader has found that Dell can't seem to ship him all the media he ordered no matter how hard it tries.

"Our organization purchased a Dell Inspiron 9400 -- the latest and greatest," the reader wrote. "Our organization's policy is to wipe and re-image all systems to prevent any issues from arising, such as Google Desktop which is now standard with Dell systems. Since this is the first 9400 we have, we needed to wipe and rebuild it. As many are aware, you have to request the media when purchasing a system from any major manufacturer any more, and I diligently did this, ordering the software kit that is supposed to include all the software installed on the system. Little did I know that this meant I would only receive selected items and media for a completely different system."

The reader received the Windows XP CD and a Drivers & Utilities CD with the system, and at first he thought everything was fine. "But the Drivers & Utilities CD ended up being for the 9300 series Inspiron and as such did not include any of the correct software or drivers for the 9400. Completely missing were the discs for the MediaDirect application and the Sonic Solutions CD/DVD authoring package."

The reader tried downloading the missing drivers and applications, but ran into problems there too. "The support.dell.com site does include most of the hardware drivers, excluding the Intel SM Bus Controller, but unfortunately there is only an update for Sonic Solutions and a reinstallation/repair tool for MediaDirect, both of which do not work without the original application. Going to technical support, they told me that the driver disc was probably for the 9300 because they did not have the 9400 disc ready when our system shipped, so I would need to work with Dell Customer Care to order it. To their credit, the person I dealt with in Customer Care seemed extremely diligent in digging around to try and find a method to get me either application, but to no avail. After the better part of an hour working with the Customer Care team, she was able to send what she believes will be the Sonic software, but was unable to find a way to send the 2.0 MediaDirect media that will work on the 9400. That's a frustration because MediaDirect's ability to play media without booting the OS was one of the factors in our choosing this system -- we could have easily found a similar system without this feature and paid a lot less."

Several weeks later, the reader was still waiting for any of the software to show up. "So far I have spent about six hours on the phone with Tech Support, Customer Care and my Dell inside sales rep and have little to show for it," the reader wrote. "Everyone that I have dealt with sees the software kit SKU on this order and sees no reason why I did not get full media. In fact, almost everyone I have worked with recommends that I return the system, then reorder and I would 'likely' receive the correct software with the new order. While a return is an option, this system has already gone out on a business trip and won't be back for a couple weeks. Beyond this fact, it is exceptionally wasteful for both my organization and Dell to have a system returned just because the ordered media was not initially delivered. After all of my frustration, it just feels like there is a broken system within Dell. Everyone I have dealt with genuinely seems to want to help, but has been unable to do anything."

Several more hours of work on the reader's part finally managed to get most of the software headed his way. "I finally found someone in Customer Care that was able to ship the Media Direct 2.0 reinstallation CD -- SKU DH371 for anyone that needs this," the reader wrote. "This did allow me to regain the ability to play DVDs/CDs without having to boot to Windows which is exceptional. Unfortunately, we are still unable to use the Dell Media Experience which does the same thing when in Windows (similar to Windows Media Center Edition). I have now spent more hours between my inside sales rep, web chats and calls to Customer Care trying to acquire this software. At this point, I do think I will finally get all of the software if I continue to be tenacious. Unfortunately, it is costing my organization literally days of effort to acquire the software kit that was ordered with the system."

A month after I first heard him, the reader reports he is still waiting for the Dell Media Experience CD, but he has received six different shipments from Dell, much of it incorrect or duplicate items. "As much as I appreciate the effort and flurry of shipments, I can't imagine this has been a cost effective experience for Dell," the reader wrote. " And after my experiences, I strongly doubt someone with a failed hard disk would be able to get their Inspiron 9400 back up and running to the level it shipped since the various pieces of media are near impossible to acquire. After many years experience issues with bleeding edge technology, I am not overly surprised to have issues with this system. I just didn't expect it to be acquiring the media to use it."

I'm not entirely surprised this is happening-- I've heard so many horror stories about Inspiron units it's not even funny. This is why I tell people to pass up the Inspirons for the Latitude-- the support and reliability of the individual systems seem so much better.

why re-install as a policy[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#4)
by JimB on Fri Mar 24, 2006 at 09:57:22 PM PDT

Because it is impossible to buy a Dell system pre-configured without their junkware, spyware, and malware. It's one of the reasons that I use to show that the dell price doesn't include the cost of fixing their silly software install. Add up all the timecost it takes to build a decent corporate image for the dells and you've priced yourself into any other brand.

Obviously, you don't work in corporate IT...[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#5)

why on earth would anyone as a 'policy' decide to format and reinstall every new PC? too much time on your hands? if you want a business computer, don't buy an inspiron. dell is by far the best vendor for providing media... try getting any media from HP.

Let's suppose that a company orders a hundred of these laptops. Let's also suppose that a company keeps a software image of laptops on their network, created with DriveImage Pro or Symantec Ghost, so that if a salesperson, VP, or other person FUBARs the laptop, it can be quickly reloaded in about half an hour's time, limiting lost productivity.

You simply cannot do this with the default install of software. The standard install of Windows has Windows Product Activation, and you'll run into all sorts of problems trying to run the same image on multiple laptops. So your corp. does the smart thing and buys a Corporate License for Windows XP Pro, which allows for multiple installs since it includes no Windows Product Activation. That corporation does what EVERY corp. I know does, and installs Windows from scratch to create the image, which also has the bonus effect that the IT department knows exactly how Windows is configured down to the last setting. They only do this once (and then reimage all the other laptops with this first image), but they need all the original software that should be included in order to do this.

Heck, let's look at it this way. Suppose the hard disk b0rks two months into ownership, and this software isn't included...what does the customer do now? They're in the exact same situation as the one who reinstalls Windows...would you blame them for their failed hard disk? Or should Dell have provided the software in the first place?

The systems above will only come with Windows/OpenManage/Any other programs that you CHOOSE. They do not install "junkware" on them unless you ask for it. Not sure how it took the above poster 3 days to remove software from his Precision... I just got a new Inspiron 6400 and less than an hour later I had removed all the unwanted software (and with only 1 reboot required). Another hour and I had all of the latest Windows Updates installed... not too bad IMHO.

You can make a copy from image of Windows, Office, Notes etc faster than taking the windows install that comes by default and adding Office etc. Since this came up... We bought 20 corporate XP licenses. Which I have installed on about 200 computers. The computers all came with XP so I have a license for each of them. This seems okay but I have never looked into if it is actually legal or not... anyone know for sure?

Billy G. wants you to buy licenses for every computer and I imagine if you alter the configuration from single to corporate then that voides the single license. But I'm not a lawyer so you should ask others with more knowledge...

They are different product and are licenced differently. This has always been a double bill for businesses you purchase the license with the computer(unless you get a barebones system) they you have to use a license for your corporate version.

Enterprise licenses are upgrade-only. You're only allowed to install them on machines that already have a licensed copy of an OS.

You can't buy "os-less" machines or build your own from scratch and then install your enterprise XP on them.

I already have the software I need, so I order the new system with the cheapest software bundle avaialbe and wipe the hard drive to get rid of all the trial software and unecessary registry stuff.

The Reader May Actually be "Lucky"[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#3)
by srynas on Fri Mar 24, 2006 at 10:41:24 AM PDT

I sympathize with the reader's predicament and I agree that the reader is entitled to the software.  So Dell should cough this stuff-up.  Now for the "However". Most of the software may actually be junk/trial versions that you wouldn't want anyway or would have to pay to upgrade to get any real functionality.

For example, I bought a Sony multimedia computer, as an emergency panic purchase when our existing computer had a meltdown and the kids were in the middle of homework, the antivirus program that came with it was a "trial" version that would nag us about upgrading. The computer came with Sonic Stage, which seemed never to work and slowed down the computer. I am still perplexed about the Viao Action Center(??). It ran and ran but never seemed to do anything.(Probably just phoned home.)

Anyway, overtime all these programs have been deleted and have been replaced.  However, when we have to reinstall the operating system we have to delete this stuff all over again.  My advice, only get the operating system when buying a computer, but then that advice is pointless in this situation.

Add a netgear router[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#10)

I think it was netgear router. Our purchasing agent (yup, thats the guy to piss off) ordered a dell for home with the packaged netgear router. He gets it and the driver CD to install the router is broken (seemingly the only piece of software on the planet not already loaded!) Of course it is not dell's problem or netgear's or anyone elses. NOONE will simply send him another CD. Yup, one actually suggested returning it all as above. One said to download it, but was stumped as to how to set up the router to access the internet to get the software to access the internet...... Just love customer service in the modern day :/ I decide what to get for the office and he orders it, what are the odds of getting a Dell in here now dude :) ---- Personal favorite is my MB that comes with the install instructions on CD...So you need to assemble the computer to read how to assemble the computer !!

Image the BOM before 1st boot...[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#11)
by Anonymous User on Wed Mar 29, 2006 at 02:29:31 PM PDT

Image the drive before it first boots; that way, you can always get back to the way the machine was delivered to you by blowing that image back to it, booting it's initial setup, and removing offensive software and / or adding what you want to get a working machine. Even if just for interim use. Get the OS product key(s) for the BOM load (KeyFinder usually works), and you can reuse to sysprep / reimage... no XP OS activation required. If you're hell-bent on using your own OS load... you usually have the option to pull specific files from an offline BOM image, which may allow you to obtain drivers manually. Not pretty, perhaps, but not "weeks and weeks", either...

Recent Inspirion 6000 Purchase - CD's No Problem[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#13)
by Anonymous User on Fri Mar 31, 2006 at 08:03:51 AM PDT

About two months ago I purchased a new Inspirion 6000 from Dell. After placing the order I realized I didn't specify that I wanted the CD's. I was a little worried I wasn't going to get them as I too wanted to blow all the pre-installed junk away and start with a clean install. However after a short phone call to Dell, the CD's were in the mail and they arrived a couple of days after the computer. They sent exactly what I needed and things went smoothly. My only complaint is that they don't automatically ship them with the computer or at least offer it up as an option on the configuration screen? Anyway, just wanted to let folks know that sometimes Dell actually does come through!

MS REQUIRES THEM TO SHIP THE CD'S, according to[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#16)
by Anonymous User on Tue Apr 04, 2006 at 10:59:52 AM PDT

Microsoft's OEM System Builder contract requires the OEM to ship the offical Microsoft CD's. At least, that's what Microsoft's website says.... (this may require a Passport login) http://oem.microsoft.com/script/contentpage.aspx?pageid=557166 Look on the right side for the FAQ: Here's the cut n paste: Q. Can I create my own recovery disks and sell these with the computer systems that I build? A. No. System Builders may not create their own recovery solution with removable media (e.g., a recovery CD). A full version of the Windows operating system is provided on a hologram CD in the Microsoft System Builder Pack for each end user and the CD is required to be transferred to the end user at the time of distribution. The hologram CD acts as the recovery media. However, System Builders can offer a hard disk recovery solution in addition, but not as a replacement, to the distribution of the hologram CD. There are third-party software companies that can help System Builders do this and they are outlined in a white paper document that is published to the System Builder Web site at: http://oem.microsoft.com/script/ contentpage.aspx?pageid=516572. This white paper includes the legal, licensing, and technical requirements for this type of hard disk-based recovery solution.

MS REQUIRES TO SHIP CD'S... uh... not really....[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#18)
by Anonymous User on Tue Apr 04, 2006 at 08:49:46 PM PDT

Well Microsoft's website is wrong then. Dell ships us about 40+ PC's a year which we many times open and customize prior to the customer receiving them. Never do they contain any hologram M$ discs. They do contain a greenish labeled Dell "Recovery Disc" which contains a copy of XP.

Here's something that confused the heck out of me though....

One of the folks in our office transferred her laptop to another user. User-2 got a "DOD-wiped" box, with no software at all loaded. User-1 "couldn't find the discs".
So our buyer called up his Dell rep and the next day we got a new "Recovery Disc" by delivery. No charges at all for it. I was absolutely amazed.
I would never have believed that Dell would send a new disc with a fully loadable copy of XP on it with just a phone call and a plea. Further, we have, ...ahem..., "seen information to suggest" that one could take that same CD and pop it into a blank brandX PC and watch XP load up and run seemingly normally... somehow never asking for any key...
Maybe we just "got the magic disc" or there's something here I don't understand...and I've been working with PC's since DOS 3.0... Kinda moved on to Linux for the most part myself, but I see these Windows boxes running through work all the time.
This happened just last week and seemed very unusual to me; as controlling as I know M$ to be.

Quit wasting your time and money! As you said, "In fact, almost everyone I have worked with recommends that I return the system, then reorder and I would 'likely' receive the correct software with the new order." Reutrn it and re-order it. Make Dell fell the pain!

This isn't the first time I hear complaints about Dell, but at least this time they seem like they wants to help out. It's a pity that they can't get it right, and it's bad that the customer company loses money and time because of this. I hope Dell will find a better way to deal with this in the future.
