Is HP Recovering its OS Recovery Costs?

By Ed Foster, Section The Gripelog
Posted on Tue Feb 07, 2006 at 12:10:02 AM PDT

Ever since HP instituted its no-recovery-CD policy for some PCs, one thing has always puzzled me. Why would HP do it when any money saved on its Windows OEM deal with Microsoft would surely be spent several times over on the additional support costs, not to mention the bad will of frustrated customers? Recent gripes suggest that one answer might be that HP thought it could charge customers for that support.

"I had to pay HP for system recovery CDs because I wanted to reload everything when my computer was malfunctioning," one reader wrote. "My computer is over four years old, so of course it is no longer under warranty. I could not get the computer to recognize the recovery CDs that HP sent me, so I had to call the HP tech number again. Now HP wants to charge me $45 to tell me how to make the recovery CDs they sent me work. They said this happens a lot with these CDs."

A reader whose HP Pavilion dv4000 was only a few months old had a similar experience recently when an error message told him a Windows file was missing or corrupt. "I did exactly what it said and finally got into the recovery console, which only had a C: prompt and a message saying to type 'exit' to quit," the reader wrote. "They do not show any instructions on how to work in the recovery console -- if we are not given any documentation on how to use the recovery console, how am I supposed to recover it? I called HP Support and they said that this is a very complicated case and our 'senior support experts' can help you. The guy was literally selling the expertise of the technical support expert; and said I can buy 30 minutes for a charge of $60 and the resolution is not guaranteed. I asked him to just tell me how to fix the XP installation, but he said I would risk losing data if I tried to do it myself without their experts walking me through it."

The dv4000 customer decided to buy the 30 minutes of support time and was put in touch with the HP 'expert' rep. "The guy told me to do the same things which I'd done by rebooting from the setup CD, trying to access the setup windows, etc.," the reader wrote. "Finally he asked me to type chkdsk/r in the recovery console and said this would bring my computer back, which worked. What I don t understand is why they had to play this drama just to issue a DOS command. In the absence of a recovery CD, they should put the instructions either in a document or the recovery console should provide the instructions. I am pretty sure there may be a lot of customers paying HP for such support activities even though the product is within the warranty period. I believe they are knowingly profiting from a problem in their recovery process and are applying scare tactics to rip off the customers."

Some customers even find out on day one of their HP experience that the disk-based recovery partition may not work when needed. "How about when you need the recovery disk fresh out of the box?" wrote one reader. "I just opened up (a new PC) and need the disk to get it started. I was told by tech support that I could take it back to the store where I purchased it or give them $25 for the recovery CD. What a deal."

But the best deal might be avoiding PCs without recovery CDs altogether. "I recently went through this 'lack of recovery CD-ROM' that so many others have experienced," another reader wrote. "The computer manufacturers lying in bed with Microsoft thought, 'what a great idea, store the install software on a hard drive partition! We can save $1 for every computer we sell!' Yeah, that's great until the customer's hard drive crashes and s/he has NO WAY to recover the system. I say, stop buying these computers that do not come with the original install software on external media. If you do not look into this ahead of time you will eventually pay for it in the long run. Usually with either NO or expensive support. This policy is essentially a consumer scam. Stay away from these systems!"

Disposable computers[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#1)

I wrestled HP notebook problems awhile back. It ended up that the CPU's heat sink had lost its ability to transduce heat. While I was researching the issue there was a particulary interesting post something to the effect of "HP makes disposable computers". Very insightful...

The rational but unfortunate alternative[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#2)
by srynas on Tue Feb 07, 2006 at 06:49:13 AM PDT

I'm throwing in the towel on this issue.  I would advocate going to Ebay or a local computer store and buying the retail version of WindowsXP, even if the computer manufacturer provided you with a so-called restore disk.

The reason for this gutless act is that many of the computers are preloaded with a bunch of garbage software that has to be deleted. Using the manufacturer's system restore options simply reinstalls all this junk.

I hate to pay twice and I realize that I am not standing on principle, unfortunately the rationale approach is to take the "low" cost/effort option.  I believe that the costs (time, money, aggravation) associated with using a restore disk outweigh the cost of simply buying the retail version of XP.  Maybe one of these days I will take the leap into Linux.

Yeah, I'd throw in the towel, too. I got a Kanotix CD and installed Debian Linux on my Pavilion 542x.It works beautifully. If you don't really have to run Windows, say for the sake of some required Windows-only application, there are some great options out there.

Linux[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#60)

Absolutely, there are a number of good linux distributions which are both far less hassle for most users to install than windows and provide a more complete desktop by default. If you don't have much Windows only software tying you to the platform, though even if you do Crossover office may well run it perfectly, go and download the Ubuntu Linux LiveCD from http://www.ubuntu.com/download, or alternatively, ask them to send you a copy at https://shipit.ubuntu.com/ You may find that a Linux LiveCD is an excellent option if you wish to extract data from an unbootable windows machine, just boot from the CD, plug your USB Flashdrive or network cable in and mount the Windows partition to copy the files over.

Throwing In the Towel[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#4)

My son's HP (sans recovery CD) croaked yet again about a week ago, and this time the disk-based recovery system crashed each time he attempted it.

I was waffling on ordering a recovery CD - some symptoms imply a possible hardware failure, and I hate to throw good money after bad. I'm tempted to just load Ubuntu on it instead and avoid all the Windows migraines.

But rest assured, I will never ever ever purchase another computer product from HP. This one has been long on frustration and short on satisfaction.

Question: Is it possible to recover the Win XP installation keys from the HP, so that I could reinstall from a clean (non-HP) Win XP disk?

Thanks for any suggestions along these lines.

Try this. I just downloaded, it works on WinXP Pro[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#15)

Go to the link below and follow the path to several freebies. I personally use Everest Home Edition but I no longer see where the Windows XP Product key is listed in that program. I downloaded "Keyfinder" from this web site below and it worked, but it only runs in Windows. Note that "ViewKeyXP" no longer works with SP2. Without a working Windows, you'll have to go into Recovery Console to try to resurrect it, or go to a DOS based solution. Several geek web sites -- CastleCops, Experts-Exchange, Annoyances, Elder Geek, Major Geeks, Kelly's Korner -- offer search options that may lead you to the extremely complex and tedious task of recovering the key from a bootable CD that you will have to create. Unless you are truly a geek (I am) then it's going to be very difficult for you! Try this for a Windows based program: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/ViewKeyXP.htm I hope this at least points you in a helpful direction. If it makes you feel any better, I bought a non-Dell for the first time in 15 years, and I was shocked to discover, after the fact of course, that I didn't get all of the CD media like Dell gives you with its systems. I couldn't believe my eyes! Next time I'll know better. Live and learn, eh?

Since you suspect that there might be some hardware problem, why don't you boot it up with knoppix or kanotix and make sure everything is working and stable before your fork out the money for XP? That way, if there is any hw problem, you fix it first. Who knows, your son may like it so much that he may actually move away from XP and save himself all the problems associated with XP.

You can't just install using the code on the label? You have to use the same XP version i believe (xp-home-OEM probably) I had no problem rebuilding my buddies emachine that choked on the magic recovery disk by installing my copy of xp-home-OEM on it and using his number on the sticker. or is HP so far out in left field that this doesn't work on em? Boss's laptop is HP, so it wouldn't hurt to know ahead of time if i should be imagining it more ;)

The XP key that is on the side of your HP will work with almost any plain vanilla OEM XP CD. The key you "discover" using Keyfinder will not work at all... YMMV

I have several HP Desktop PC's which were downgraded at purchase to Win 2000 and are now being upgraded to XP Pro. I am using my personal copy of XP Pro and the license key located on the sticker on the box, and during the installation process, I am told that the license key is not valid. I have tried this with 3 seperate boxes & 3 different license keys now, all HP, and am dissapointed by the results. I have also called both HP and MS and am told by both that my only option is to purchase a copy of XP Pro. What a joke!

If you are going to buy MS OS at retail anyway -- "manufacture" the PC yourself. Do some research (lots of online resources) and settle on the mix of hardware you want for your useage. THe only tools you need are patience and one small Phillips screwdriver, plus a ground strap. You get the full retail warranty on each component, and you get to use the component makers' drivers instead of HP, Dell, etc. proprietary drivers. Plus, if you can go Linux/Open Source, there is major cost advantage. Corporate buyers won't do this, but if enough individuals and small businesses start -- just maybe they will notice and wise up.

Is it possible to buy the hardware without the OS? If so, just buy a clean box and install the retail version of the OS. If enough people demand this, maybe the PC vendors will receive the message. After all, given XP's "phone-home" qualities anymore, m$soft's profit is assured whether they sell through an OEM or through a software retailer.
