Mystery Book From Buy.com

Even the most basic e-commerce transaction such as buying a book online can still have its unexpected surprised. One reader was recently left scratching his head when his purchase from Buy.com turned out to be a Navy book - not a naval book, mind you, but a book that is stamped as being property of the U.S. Navy.

"I just purchased a copy of The Modern Library's edition of The Character of Physical Law by Richard Feynman," the reader wrote. "The book I got from Buy.com is brand new, not a used book. But it has a library-style plastic sleeve over the dust cover, a library spine label '530 FEY,' and a sticker on the inside front cover that says 'PROPERTY OF THE US NAVY.' "

The reader tried contacting Buy.com to see if he could clear up what had happened, but without much success. "I asked the Buy.com support e-mail people, but got only banal auto-answers about returning the item if I was not satisfied. I wondered if there was any way to figure out why buy.com sent me the US Navy's book. I wouldn't know where to start trying to figure this mystery out."

There are only a few clues to go on. "The USPS tracking on the package showed it was shipped from Atlanta, GA 30369," the reader wrote. "I guess Buy.com has a warehouse there, since some math books I ordered were also shipped from there. The book is brand new -- it even smells 'new' -- not used at all. I'm sure there is an innocent explanation -- perhaps a box of books intended for the Navy got switched with a box for retail? Anyway, I guess this isn't really a gripe -- I don't care as long as the book has all the pages -- but it's just such a perplexing mystery."

I'm not a librarian, but did work in a library for 18 years. 530 FEY would be a Science book, by FEYnmann. There are commercial services that will process books for libraries, doing the scut work of putting on protective jacketing, spine labels, "property of..." stamping and the like. I would guess that this book is part of an order for a US Navy library, and the order was most likely canceled. Can't put the book out on a commercial bookstore's shelves because of the Navy stamp, but selling it through a discount online seller is a possibility.

Interesting that the navy would order vintage Feynman physics texts. I figure they have more specific how-to engineering manuals on making their subs' nuclear reactors nuke and their radar dishes ray. Perhaps they're doing some sort of research? Just hope they don't blow us all to kingdom come with whatever they're cooking up. :)

The Navy actually does quite a lot of correspondence / distance learning, offering courses in basic sciences. Not unexepcted to find such a book available. When you're at sea you have time....

Well those of us that were career sailors were always learning something new and as an ex-nuke myself, I can say this would be at the top of my reading list. Heck, I still have his lecture series here whenever I need to brush up on mathematics and physics. Engineering manuals are nice but it's also nice to know why we are engineering something that way. The same applies to every other field of engineering I've worked in to date which are quite a few.

Worked in a mfg/dist that did considerable custom processing for large customers, which frequently had 'their' product placed in special locations, with item numbers that resembled the original item number but with a twist (ie. original ite,# BOOK, the one for the Navy would be BOOKN). Orders for this customer would only be pulled from these locations, but if somebody pulled from the wrong bin, you get a product that was customized for someone else. Not a good thing, but might explain what happened here.

I also was involed in Library book business as the above writer describe. A wholesale probably prep the book for the Navy and it was either missed picked for his order or the Navy canceled the their order for the book.

Wow, if this story is in the newsletter, it must be a slow news day. I was the one who asked Mr. Foster about this. I will point out that this is not sold on buy.com's web site as a surplus book, or anything other than a brand-new book. Other than the library markings and plastic jacket, the book is brand-new. The site's language does not indicate it is anything but a brand-new book. Also, this is not a slam on buy.com in any way. I love their site and order from them first if possible because of their low prices and good shipping alternatives. The book is not particularly dated, and would be a worthwhile read for Navy personnel. The chapter on the relationship between physics and math is probably the best. My only real fear is that some Navy seals are going to show up at my door and ask me why I have a book that is the property of the US Navy...!

This is kind of improbable, but it's just possible that someone in the Navy could claim that this was, in fact, their property. At some uncertain future date.

Sounds like a library book. Don't libraries mark de-listed titles with a stamp, something like "CANCELLED"?

I would prefer if no one replied to spam; it's obvious and pointing it out with a comment just makes for another comment to be deleted, and I have an aversion to deleting real comments. Now, emailing them off to one of us might work (the site doesn't have a "report" function, sadly, which would let regular users help), but I visit every few days and check at least the front page's worth of entries.
