Norton 2007 Incompatibility Warning Breeds Insecurity

By Ed Foster, Section The Gripelog
Posted on Tue Oct 10, 2006 at 12:18:15 AM PDT

Many users like to take a best of breed approach to security products rather than locking themselves into a security suite from one vendor. But the experience one reader just had with Symantec's Norton AntiVirus 2007 identifying his favorite firewall and anti-package packages as "incompatible applications" makes you wonder how much longer such an approach will be possible.

"I have been using Norton Antivirus 2006 in conjunction with Spy Sweeper and ZoneAlarm Pro, and this combination of three top-rated products worked very well for me," the reader wrote. "In anticipation of my subscription to updates expiring on Oct. 6, I ordered the NAV 2007 product. When I tried to install it, I got a message saying that both ZoneAlarm and Spy Sweeper had to be removed from my system before installation could continue."

Since NAV 2006 had coexisted with Spy Sweeper and Zone Alarm Pro without a problem, the reader wondered whether the NAV installation message was correct. "I tried ignoring the warning message, but the installation wouldn't proceed," the reader wrote. "The obvious solution, as Symantec's reps explained it when I called them, would be for me to abandon both of my non-Symantec stalwarts in favor of their bloated Internet Security package. The first rep simply said that the message was accurate and that Zone Alarm and Spy Sweeper would have to go. The second told me that the two programs would conflict with the spyware protection and firewall that were part of Norton AV 2007. I assumed that to be wrong, because if it were true, what would be the point of spending more money for Norton Internet Security?"

While it seemed highly improbable that Symantec would deliberately make NAV incompatible with two popular security products - particularly when it's busy complaining about alleged anti-competitive moves by Microsoft - the responses of Symantec's support reps made him wonder. "I refused to be bulled by these tactics," the reader wrote. "I was able to get the charge for the 2007 version rescinded -- or so I was told -- after another marathon conversation with two Symantec representatives on the Bangalore hotline." The reader decided to reinstall NAV 2006 and extend his Live Update subscription instead, which became another struggle. "I did exactly what I was told and borked my system so badly that I had to restore my C: drive from an image. Norton Antivirus then demanded to be reactivated, which I did, only to again discover that it couldn't be updated. Bottom line is I'll restore from backup one more time and start looking for a competing antivirus product for when this last subscription runs out."

A little Googling shows others have run into the NAV 2007 incompatibility message with these and other products, but just how widespread the problems are and in what circumstances they occur is not clear. When contacted yesterday, spokespersons said that all actual incompatibilities will be corrected soon. "Many security software vendors, including Symantec, have worked closely for years to resolve similar software conflicts and will continue to do so as new security technologies emerge," said a Symantec spokesperson, who was not able to confirm what Symantec knows about NAV 2007 conflicts with ZoneAlarm Pro or Spy Sweeper by press time. A ZoneLabs spokesperson said the company is not aware of conflicts with NAV 2007, but that any that emerge will be temporary. A Webroot spokesperson told me there is a known issue with how Spy Sweeper identifies NAV 2007 that can lead users to halt the install, and the problem will be corrected in the next release of the anti-spyware program.

So perhaps, at least for the time being, users can still choose the products they prefer in each security category. One thing for sure though is that Symantec support's handling of the situation has cost it one NAV 2007 customer. "Whatever the source of the incompatibilities, the way I was told to address them was wrong," the reader wrote. "If anyone else runs into similar problems, and doesn't want to waste a day on the phone, I'd suggest they think twice about referring their issues to Symantec support."

I am a techie. Symantec products have become bloated resource hogs. The Internet Security package will slow boot times by 60%. Additionally I have found that the upgrade via online will bork a PC real quick. What happens is the uninstall of the previous version is incomplete and the install of the new over the remnants freaks everything out. OF course theres the issue of the forced upgrades. When NIS 2006 came out anyone using 2004 or earlier got screwed as the regular updates being pushed by Norton broke them. The Norton trouble shooting is a joke. No matter what path you follow you end up at uninstall/reinstall. The Norton uninstall tool has never worked. It always takes a manual uninstall complete with registry edits to completely remove the damn thing. Live update constantly breaks. The activation keeps forgetting the product was activated. I don't know that any all in one product is any better. I have never been a big fan of somehting that promises to do everything. I find they do nothing well, just everything half assed. I personally never use nor recommend anything from Symantec. I have seen NAV detect something as simple as VunDo but be unable to remove it. Doesn't prompt for a reboot to remove items resident in memeory that are detected...just shows detected and leaves you on your own. As far as I am concerned NONE of the big name companies products are worth buying.

Symantec "Support"[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#23)

I concur - LiveUpdate gets hosed; activation gets messed up. The ActiveX programs that are supposed to help you are deathly - I used one to upgrade LiveUpdate at the request of the help page and I ended up having to uninstall/run a separate uninstall from Symantec/manually edit the registry and then reinstall everything to get it to work for another 90 days (LiveUpdate broke with LU1815 a week ago). The tech support is as bad as Dell support - I have more success (yes, I'm a techie too) on my own than with them. Symantec has become a joke - but McAfee is far worse - I disabled SpamKiller because it was actually crashing my system because it used so many CPU cycles - couldn't do PowerPoint slide shows in real time with it running.

After having a similar experience with NAV 2007 and "incompatible" software message for SpySweeper, I contacted Symanec LiveChat. I asked them for the list of "incompatible" software products. They said "There is no list."!! Since the message comes from NAV 2007's own software code, surely the programmer that wrote the code knows. The list is in the code! Hard to believe ....#$%@

Here is the FIRST install screen from a Symantec produc called "Client Security" V 2.0.4.a corporate all in one spyware/AV/ etc. My point is Symantec is aware of the incompatibility of it's products. Did it include this screen in the NAV2007 install? EXACT screen text from FIRST page of install: WARNING: To avoid conflicts and resource problems that can occur, if you have anti-virus or firewall products from other vendors on your computer, we strongly recommend that you remove them (and any consumer editions of Symantec/Norton) prior to proceeding to install Symantec Client Security (SCS) 2. Click Next > to proceed with this SCS installation, or Cancel to quit this program.

I gave up on all Symantec products years ago when they moved their customer service to India. They insisted they are right, yet they can only follow the scripts they are given, which invariably leads to removal of non-Symantec software and/or upgrading of Symantec software. They simply don't know what a customer is or how to treat them.

Oh, but they do know what a "customer" is.

A "customer" is one of those things that you blast with obnoxious, repetitive advertising until they hand over some money. Then you bug them some more until they hand over still more money.

Some of them have an annoying tendency to start making lots of noise back at you, especially if something stops working; when this happens, you cover your ears, accidentally-on-purpose hang up, connect them to your online ADVENT server ("You are in a small, cramped dark room with dusty walls and no windows. You already feel depressed. Press 1 for a maze of twisty passages, all alike. Press 2 for a maze of twisty passages, all different. For service in Punjabi, press *"), or transfer them to the Thick Accent Department headquartered in West Bahmfaq, Tajikistan or someplace similar.

Trend "Free Upgrade"[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#21)
by Anonymous User on Tue Oct 10, 2006 at 01:01:35 PM PDT

I have been running PC-Cillin Internet Security since the 2005 version, and recently received an email for a free upgrade to the 2007 version. It hosed my PC, after it complained and deinstalled Windows Defender (which I wanted rid of anyway). The error message coming up stated that it could not "start the com service". Strange, everything else worked. I could not revert to my active 2006 subscription, supposedly good for 7 months yet. Their instructions, furnished over and over again by three separate "Tech Support Persons" do not work. I can install the expired 2005 version, but its dead after that. So far, no comment for my request for my money back. I'm running free AVG right now. Will have to restore and reinstall everything in order to fix this and will NOT be going with Trend, Symantec, or Macafee.

After purchasing a PC for my son I decided to upgrade NAV to the three-pack version when my subscription expired and get all of our home machines on equal ground. This went well until it came time to renew the subscription. I purchased the 3-pack upgrade through their website and successfully apply the key to the first copy. It failed on the second. After much wasted time reviewing their website on how to apply multple keys, I called support. A rep identifing herself as 'Baby' told me that when I purchased what was clearly identified as a 3-pack upgrade, in reality I only had purchased one upgrade, but she would be happy to take a credit card number to fix the situation. I wish I could have spoken to an adult about their deceptive practices, because Baby wasn't much help.

Why even run AV on such a machine?[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#28)
by foxyshadis1 on Tue Oct 10, 2006 at 01:42:34 PM PDT

For old machines with limited memory, I've long given up on system antivirus. Email host antivirus I can still dig, since that's the #1 virus vector and most people don't have antivirus firewalls, but most antivirus is useless against the threats of spyware, trojans, and keyloggers, and Windows Defender is just enormous.

Forcing them to run as a limited/guest user is far more effective than defensive software, and easier on resources. Combined with scheduled runs of antispyware and/or antivirus from a priveledged account, it works better than real-time scanning.

Sure you can. The upfront application of a few hours of work (if that, it usually takes me five minutes to set permissions and ten to change the appropriate policy settings) is more than worth the frustration and time lost of dealing with an obnoxious trojan. As I was unfortunately reminded recently while cleaning a friend's hard drive using the admin account. For most people, I just make some basic tweaks and tell them to use the extra (passwordless) admin account when they need to install something. Most pick it up pretty quickly.

If you're really hardcore, you can always run the system in a reversible VMware session, but that's often overkill.

Unless VMWare is now free, please don't recommend it here. Yet another expensive thing is not what the less well-to-do are looking for in the way of solutions -- not when nothing can justify such expense in a product whose marginal cost of reproduction is close to zero, anyway.

OTOH, hours of extra work isn't going to appeal to anyone either. Until the needed permissions are set up by application installers, people will, for the most part, just run as administrator. Especially as numerous applications won't work properly (with whatever permissions!) in a limited account anyway.

Like I said, hardcore, I don't expect your average person to work with VMs. VirtualPC is free and the basic VMWare server is free, though you need a server OS for that one. (A linux host + windows xp guest works.)

And if marginal cost is going to set pricing for software, hey, everything should be mandated free. Not like programmers need to eat. (I will grant you that VMWare makes excessive profits, especially with their so-called "support".)

Anyway, lots of applications are moving to working well in limited user mode, and there are compatibility tools for those that won't yet; the couple hours is how much I have to spend customizing mine, not the 4-5 programs most people use. I'll keep pushing for it because those who have the most trouble with working around limited accounts are usually the ones most at risk of being hijacked. Even if it's easy side income, I hate getting called to clean up after spyware, viruses, and 0-day exploits, and would rather help people actully be safe than install an antivirus just to feel safe.

"And if marginal cost is going to set pricing for software, hey, everything should be mandated free. Not like programmers need to eat. (I will grant you that VMWare makes excessive profits, especially with their so-called "support".)"

Funny you should mention that. A more recent gripe (the copyright durations one) has a rather lengthy, but well-structured and intelligent comment on almost precisely the subject of "why software copyright is evil". This included a cogent explanation of "why software copyright isn't needed", and thus of "why abolishing software copyright won't starve programmers". As I recall, it noted that programmers don't see copyright royalties from code they write at all, and moreover that most are employed coding for the user rather than for a vendor that intends to sell the software at an inflated price, and that even big software companies can survive by shifting to a sell-the-blades model of give away the software, but sell maintenance services. (Corporate buyers are the big source of cash for Microsoft and friends right now; and they already pay through the nose for support or software "assurance" or whatever. They will keep doing so, even if they can have the software for free. Either they hire an outside company to keep things working and up-to-date, or they hire employees to do so. So the techies (including coders) stay in food, either working for vendors that make their money from support contracts or working directly for the end-user.

It's the three-piece-suited middlemen that stand to lose, which is why it will never happen.

(There's a followup making the milder suggestion of merely instituting compulsory licensing for software copyrights, like there is for things like elevator music. Yeah -- "non-dramatic" music can be compulsory licensed; now you know why elevator music, hold music, and the like seems to come from Pfizer's insomnia-remedy R&D subdepartment.)

When you come down to it, the current economics and pricing model for a lot of stuff is seriously out of whack. Information, in any form, is non-rivalrous and has a marginal cost of reproduction approaching zero. Coding skill, on the other hand, is definitely rivalrous, and somewhat scarce; really good coding skill is definitely quite scarce. So even if people don't pay for the code, they will pay for the coder. Economics 101.
