HP Wants to Replace Defective LCD Display With Smaller Screen

By Ed Foster, Section The Gripelog
Posted on Sun Aug 21, 2005 at 10:19:03 PM PDT

Is the new HP going to be any easier for customers to deal with than the old HP was? One bad sign is a recent story relayed to me by a reader that sounds a lot like stories we heard in the Carly era. You may be able to get the service you deserve if you're willing to fight, but only by going over the heads of those who are supposed to be helping you.

"A year ago a friend purchased an HP PC with a 17-inch f1703 flat-screen display, and recently the monitor died," the reader wrote. "She called HP for support. We won't bore you with the details of her more than one-hour wait on hold before she could even speak to a service rep. But she did not want it to be a total waste of her time so she also went to the HP web site while on hold and found this link explaining the defect was due to a manufacturing process error. What this site doesn't tell you is that HP has decided that it is too much trouble to give their customers a like-for-like replacement. Therefore, users are getting a 15-inch flat-screen instead of a 17-inch because, in their own words, 'they're having too many problems with 17-inch displays.'"

The reader said his friend was not going to accept the downgrade of the monitor she'd paid for without a fight. "When they shipped the 15-inch monitor to her, she refused delivery and it was sent back," the reader wrote. "She called the customer support number and was again fed the line that all 17-inch displays were being replaced by a 15-inch displays. She refused to accept this and asked to speak to a supervisor. The agent refused to connect her with a supervisor, and at this point she was fed up with having to deal with the arrogance of an agent half a world away. Does that take the cake or what? You would think a company like HP would bend over backwards to provide a like-for-like or better replacement, not a lesser quality product. A quick visit to their web site shows that they are still selling 17-inch flat-panel displays, so I don't understand their substitution of a lesser display when replacing a defective one!"

By the time I heard from the reader's friend directly, she had taken the step so many readers have found necessary in the past: she called HP corporate headquarters to demand help. Ultimately she spoke to an HP senior case manager who said the overseas support reps had misinformed her. HP did not have a policy of replacing the defective f1703s with 15-inch units, he told her, and she would be shipped a 17-inch replacement display.

Even then she wasn't completely out of the woods. "Unfortunately, I still have not received the 17-inch monitor that I was told I would have by today," she wrote a few days later. "I called the corporate office to make sure everything was still on for today and the case manager still hadn't gotten a FedEx tracking number. He promised he would get back to me in an hour, but he didn't." Days later she was waiting to hear if and when the replacement monitor was shipping. "What is going on here? Whatever happened to customer care and genuine concern for the customer? I have been fortunate enough to have a neighbor let me borrow their old Gateway screen so I can work, but this nightmare seems endless."

Finally, two weeks into the ordeal, a package arrived. "Around 11:30 am today the FedEx truck delivered a package," she wrote. "Would you be willing to bet that the resent me a 15-inch screen? Well, they did! Another f1503, like the one I refused before." The shipping mix-up was soon corrected, however, and the reader's friend reports she now has a 17-inch replacement display that seems to be working fine. "All this shouldn't have had to happen," she wrote. "I have always thought of HP as a respectable company who always puts the consumer first. I've learned my opinion of HP has to change."

I gave up on HP years ago for computers. We purchased a new computer (from Best Buy) and the floppy drive was installed wrong. In order to report it, on an Easter weekend, I had to dialup (this was before the Internet) and let HP's reporting software work.

Unfortunately, the modem was also dead. We returned the unit the Monday after Easter.

Many years later, we looked at an HP unit at CompUSA and wouldn't you know it, the floppy drive in this unit was not installed correctly.

I'm still trying to figure out how a person can install a floppy drive at a 45 degree angle in the floppy bay and get the connecters in.

HP, ugh![ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#2)

After years of building my own PCs, I bought an HP last Christmas. How bad could they be, I thought? The motherboard had a bad keyboard PS2 connector, which I was able to confirm by wiggling the cable and losing keyboard input. I spent hours on the phone with HP as they demanded over and over again that I reboot and reinstall Windows from the CD.

Never again, not if they were the last vendor on the planet!

I too had PS2 keyboard connector problems with my HP motherboard (I bought a re-furb unit from the CompUSA EBay store). The seller did not hesitate to offer a replacement, even sent me a shipping box for the return and paid shipping. The unit is now almost 2 years old and has not missed a beat. My "old" HP is also going strong (it is 5 years old). I can not say anything BAD about my HP experience.

I have had nothing but GREAT service from HP! I had a bad hard drive after 2 years and they replaced it no questions asked and the tech even called me back to see if everything went smoothly in the reciept of the unit after they replaced the hard drive. It only took 3 days and it has been reliable ever since so I am one of the silent few (many?) who have had good results with my HP computer...but the squeaky wheels usually get the press...

Yep, that sounds like the "new" HP. I've refused to buy ANY HP products for several years because of this new, screw-the-customer attitude that Carly infused the entire company with.

Just last Thursday, I was in Costco with a friend, looking at a couple laptops. He asked me my opinion, as a friend of his had asked him for a suggestion. So, I looked at the available choices - a couple HP's, a compaq, a gateway, and a couple Toshiba's, plus some no-name. Told him HP/Compaq's support was essentially non-existant, as was their commitment to quality and the customer, Gateway only very (very) slightly better. Of the choices in the store, only the Toshiba would be reasonably safe. As I'm telling my friend this, a costco employee walks up, and asks me my opinion too; he knows someone who needs a laptop. Tell him the same thing, HP/Compaq worst possible choice, Toshiba only decent choice of the in-store models.

I told him Dell is a better choice than what's available in the store. I know Dell has support issues too, but they haven't sunk to the level of HP (Yet)

I guess if you must buy an HP, Costco is the best place to do it. Since you have 6 months to return it for a refund, you can mostly avoid HP "support"

Funny you should mention HP + Costco. I too had always assumed that HP was rock-solid in equipment and customer support, but I had only dealt with them as a corporate customer - even then mainly printer issues. I bought a iPAQ 3900 handheld right after Christmas 2002 from Costco. HP was just becoming H/Paq and Carly-itis was setting in. I immediately went to the HP support site to get my free upgrade to PPC2002, and fried my machine with upgrade. HP support was useless. I called and waited on endless hours of hold - only to have pages from the instuction manual read back to me. - badly. I wrote email and snail mail to support. Finally, as so many others did, I went straight to Corporate, and sent my frustrations to Carly's office. Further, I also copied Costco corporate in Washington - telling them how poorly HP support had treated me. I emphasized that Costco was still "on the hook" for my $400+ investment, since I was within my return period. After about two weeks of wrangling, I finally was sent a replacement device by HP. Of course, by the time I actually had one working, they were selling for nearly half-price at most outlets. I still stand behind HP printers. Friends don't let friends buy HP computing equipment.

That 6 month return is No-Questions-Asked -- as long as you have the receipt and the original packing materials.

We bought a Toshiba laptop.  2 months later, the display was dead (LCD or connection thereto).  We hooked up an external monitor, wiped and reinstalled from the recovery, and returned it.  No muss, no fuss.

Funny thing, something very similar happened lately to a coworker of mine. Her LCD screen went out, but it was a month out of the year warranty, so they wanted a hundred just to put a tech on the phone with her and a few hundred to repair/replace it. Right, might as well get a new one if they're going to pull that, she figured. I can see their point, but still, a year for a monitor is worth a prorated coupon at least. Why the black and white "it's either in warranty and fully covered or it's not"?

Her husband said he'd never buy HP again, and asked me for a good recommendation, but what am I going to say? The local shops were all driven out by best buy, the big brands sold their souls to wall street, and the only company I can think of that hasn't pulled all its money out of customer service is Acer, but I haven't heard much about them in years.

As for monitors, I told him NEC, Samsung, Sony, since that's what my company's had the best luck with. Viewsonic if you're on a budget, Sony if you're not. (I love my new Sony screen, even if I can't read Tahoma on it.)

We bought my husband an Acer laptop at MicroCenter (not brick and mortar in all markets, but available on the web) about a year ago. We've had GREAT luck with it (and with MicroCenter). We've had a couple of Acers over the years, plus some peripherals from them, and I've always been happy.

I recently was looking up something about BenQ monitors that I had seen at MicroCenter, and it looks as though there is a relationship between BenQ and Acer. Don't know if it's a buyout, name change, or what, but based on my experience with Acer, I'd give them a try.

I'm about to buy a new notebook PC this week. It won't be an HP.

My personal experience with HP support has been good. I bought a dv1000 series laptop in January online from Circuit City. The HP seemed to be the best within my price range. I did not buy the extended warranty. The laptop arrived with many dead pixels. I took the unit into the local CC store, and they replaced it, no problem.

Then, I had problems getting the new laptop connected to my home wireless network. The Indian phone support people spent hours with me. They were all very pleasant and helpful, and never talked down to me or seemed like they were in a hurry to get off the phone. And it turned out my software problems were self-inflicted. (I never admitted that to them, though!)

I want to try out a laptop before I buy it. Can't do that with a Dell.

That brings up another problem; many stores including Circuit City, & Best Buy charge hefty re-stock fees (15%) if you return a laptop for any reason, unless you exchange it for the exact same model. So, if playing with it for 15 minutes in the store doesn't reveal various problems or annoyances that you discover once you've used it at home/work for a day or 2, too bad. You can return/exchange it for a different unit, but it'll cost you. I suppose you could dispute the 15% fee on your credit card bill, though. I haven't tried because I would NEVER buy a computer/camera/etc.. from a store that charges a re-stock fee.

For awhile, circuit city didn't assess re-stock fees on anything, then they brought them back. Now, CompUsa is not charging re-stock fees. Best Buy pretty much always has.

Of course, Costco is the best place to get a laptop with no re-stock fees and 6 months to return it. The in-store selection is limited, but there's quite a bit more available online; including some Dell models.

CompUSA?[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#22)

Since when?  Last October, I went to buy a laptop there (I needed it "NOW", so I had to buy retail instead of web), and they informed me of a 15% restock, if the box was opened.

I went to Costco instead (6 months no questions asked).

Ok, I was partly right. Around December they changed the return policy. Now there's no re-stock fee, but for opened notebooks and some other items you only get a compusa gift card. Buying from costco is a MUCH better idea. Don't understand how compusa/best buy/circus city, etc... expect someone to fully evaluate something like a notebook or digital camera  by playing with it for 15 minutes in the store.

And by the way, good for you for refusing to buy at a store that charges a re-stock fee. If many more customers did the same, the re-stock fees would end.  I highly doubt the store takes any loss on a return, They probably send it back to the manufacturer, and deduct the cost from their invoice.

I think re-stock fees should be made illegal. Apparently they are in Hawaii, since circuit city's restock fee excludes Hawaii.

Returning Computers[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#26)

When I worked for Inacom a few years ago, none of the vendors would accept an opened computer.  We took a loss on every computer which was returned that the customer had opened and we resold them at an "open box" discounted price.

The 6 months  return policy that Costco has is financed by Costco, not the computer manufacturers.

Maybe; but I have my doubts. I suspect costco requires the vendor to take back a product for 6 months as a condition of costco selling the product in their stores. The huge volume of products sold probably more than cover the cost of the occasional return.

I suspect the same at CC/BB, etc.. They have a lot of clout with the vendors; if they drop your product line, that's got to hurt sales pretty badly.

Inacom was a huge distributor, slightly smaller than MicroAge.  Even Ingram Micro couldn't return an opened box computer to the manufacturer, and I think that Ingram Micro is the biggest distributor in the country.
