It's Hard to Say Goodbye to AOL

It's been true for lo these many years, and to judge by what I hear from readers, it remains ever so. AOL loves its customers so much it just can't bear to be parted from them ... or, at least, not from their money.


"We are going through some interesting times trying to cancel AOL service," one reader wrote recently. "Last spring my wife decided she needed a separate account for some reason and signed up with AOL. Around about July she realized that it was not being used when I got after her about the $9.95 a month, so she called AOL to cancel. They talked for 20 minutes and eventually refused to cancel the service but gave her two months 'free.' I called the next month and clearly told them we did not want the service and to cancel it, and then I wrote them a letter. They again refused to outright cancel it, but I figured I was OK, with the letter on file. Around October they started sending dunning notices for $29.95 a month. After several phone calls I finally was told that after we told them to cancel the account someone ran up over 2,000 hours in a month using her screen name! I told them in no uncertain terms that we had cancelled their service and that this charge was not our responsibility. After they sent another dunning notice, I sent them a registered letter and asked the State Attorney General to investigate."

Sometimes it seems the only way to cancel your AOL account is to cancel the credit card they're billing. "I'd heard all the stories about how AOL keeps billing you, so I was very careful to follow all the correct notification procedures for terminating the account," wrote another reader. "Didn't matter. A couple of months later, the AOL charge was still showing up on my credit card statement. I called to complain, and AOL told me that they had no record of my canceling the account. What's worse, my bank wouldn't reverse the charges. When the charge showed up on the next month's bill again, that was it. Now I've got a new ISP, and a new bank!"

Just saying goodbye to AOL after a tech support call can be hard because of all the promotional offers AOL support techs try to sell customers. "AOL tech support seems to revolve around upselling and cross-marketing," one reader posted recently. "They can't fix it, or even tell you what's wrong, but they'll sell you something that does it or replaces it. New modem? Modem config software? DSL? AOL shopping? Sure!"

In fact, the best way to get AOL to be short with you may be to try to get them to deal with a real problem user. "Several days ago I received an offensive and vaguely threatening e-mail from another AOL member," wrote a reader. "I do not have any idea who this person is or why they would e-mail me. I called AOL and was told to forward the e-mail to the 'TOS General' address, since it's a violation of AOL's Terms of Service for a member to harass other members. A few days later I received a form letter from AOL telling me what a TOS violation is. I believe that is why I wrote to them in the first place? I already what a TOS violation is. I then proceeded to call AOL and tell them I was upset, only to be met with outright hostility by tech support. One AOL rep yelled at me and another hung up on me. Another could not speak English. All of them were rude, condescending, and insulting. I have no idea whether they are going to do anything about the actual offender, because they won't talk to me."

I managed to cancel AOL three years ago, but I mailed a letter with delivery confirmation so I had proof that they received it. I received a letter back stating when my service would be discontinued (three weeks after the date on the letter, for some reason). It actually worked. I must have been very lucky.

I really must have been lucky. I had been paying a yearly pre-pay for AOL for about 6 or 7 years (a yearly Christmas gift to my parents who otherwise could not afford an Internet connection) and decided to move them to another, cheaper ISP. Yes, I got the hard sell from AOL, and yes, they tried their best to keep me, but after continually saying, "No." about 50 times, they finally relented and cancelled it. I was never charged another dime. Lucky me. Yes, it was a fight, but a fight that I won. Never again will I EVER use AOL, nor will I ever recommend it to ANYONE.

    Way back in 1992 or 93 I signed up for AOL's free trial and gave my checking account information over the phone. They assured me that they would not charge my account until they received my written authorization in the mail. Lo & behold, a charge shows up on my checking account statement in only five days (instead of at the 14 day point). When I called AOL to complain they assured me they had my written authorization on file. I assured them that I had the authorization form still sitting on my desk. It took almost 2 months to get my $19.95 (I think that's how much it was) back.

    As far as I'm concerned the AOL company always has been and always will be a bunch of friggin' crooks.

    I got $10 discount at CompUSA by agreeing to a "trial subscription." They gave me a screen name and password. When I tried to log on with the screen name it came up as unknown. When I called AOL to cancel they told me the account and screen name didn't exist. A month later I was billed $29.95! Took three months and countless calls to get the non-existent account cancelled. Fortunately, Citibank reversed the charge without question.

    Similar situation, myself. I signed up at CompUSA, I'm being charged for the account, but I've no idea what the screen name is, and they frankly won't help me, even though they're LOOKING at the account. And it was under an long-expired card, so if they ask for that for confirmation, no dice. Sucks for me.

    Back in '95, I used my Visa debit card to order and subsequently cancel AOL. I intentionally made sure there was less than $14.95 in the account to make sure AOL didn't get the money. Of course, they charged after I cancelled, and of course (given the "customer-friendly" feature of banks letting underfunded charges go thru)--the account overdrafted. So I filled-out the paperwork with the bank, got my $14.95 back, and the bank charged AOL the $20 overdraft fee.

    Needless to say, AOL never tried to charge that debit card again.

    More than two years ago my house was broken into and my checkbook was stolen. At that time, one of the thieves or their cronies signed up for AOL through my checking account. I went through a variety of things (including changing my checking account number) and nothing has worked. AOL will not cancel the account without my screen name information. It states that it cannot find my checking account number or confirm the account in any way. However, after my last conversation with them (05/06/05) they sent me a letter stating that I have continued my account. This is insane. They have my name and address, and can send me a letter but cannot cancel my account. At this point, all my bank says is that I should close ALL my accounts and open them up under new numbers. So I need to get another bank, and I am afraid AOL will put something on my until now excellent credit report. I don't know what to do.

    I had a similar problem (although not with AOL) and my bank gave me a similar line, "nothing we can do", etc. When I told them that, yes, there is something they can do and they're legally rquired to do it, then they got on the stick and made it happen. People are lazy and it's a difficult process for them to go through, so they's rather just tell you they can't do anything.

    I would also complain to your state AG about AOL making unauthorized charges to your bank account. No matter who opened the AOL account, the bank account belongs to you and if you tell them to stop taking money out, they have to stop, otherwise they're committing a felony.

    then they will have violated Federal law. You could sue them in small claims court for $1000 and win by default - your credit would be clean and you'd get $1000.

    One of the most important things regarding credit is to know your rights.

    Last year I decided to go broadband so I tried to cancel my Tiscali dialup service.  

    I first tried looking on their website for any way of cancelling a service.  Nope - nothing.  They appear to operate on the principle that no-one in their right mind would ever cancel their wonderful service - just upgrade and enhance it.

    After finally finding a number I could call, the customer service operative informed me that in order to cancel I had to quote to them my original order number.  The order number was on the order paperwork sent three years previous and of course I could not find it. You would have thought they could look it up if it was the one piece of info needed to close an account, but that was completely impossible.  My customer account number, email address, postal address, bank account info nor any other piece of information was sufficient. No matter what information I could give them, they could not look up my order number, and without it I could not cancel the dial-up service.  I tried ringing up again to see if someone else would give me a different answer.  Nope.  I tried speaking to a supervisor to see if that would help.  Nope. Tried an email explaining the problem and pleading for help.  No response.  Tried several more emails - no response.

    I had a word with my bank, and they were willing to stop payment, but pointed out that if I had not formally cancelled, it could build up as a bad debt against my name and could affect my credit rating and, in extremis, result in court action and baliffs.

    I finally tried a different tack and phoned up with a general query against my account and asked for my order number. After a bit of a Q & A session as to why I needed it ('for my Accountant's records' cough), I was given it straight away.  

    Note the response to the two different approaches.  If I just needed information, they could provide it straight away.  But if I needed the same information in order to cancel a service, it was completly impossible.

    All of this couldn't possibly be a deliberate policy to make it difficult for a customer to cancel a revenue stream..... could it?

    You made your intent clear, they should have cancelled. The one time I had to cancel dial-up service I didn't have any trouble once the guy understood I was switching to cable. He realized that there was no point in trying to keep me.

    Not much has changed in the last 15 years or so. I signed up with QLink when I used a Commodore 64 to go on line. It took me 4 months to stop the service, including hassling with the bank to stop the automatic payment. The fledgling company learned some valuable information of revenue stream cancellation and it's been taken to a new high with AOL. I still can't believe that people let AOL rip them off, when they could get almost any ISP for cheaper. I guess it's like MCI's Friends and Family; once they have you, they never let go

    I too could not end AOL. I kept saying I wanted to end it. They kept giving me counter offers, saying I was such a valuable customer becuase of my many years with the company. Finally, out of exhaustion, I accepted a free year of AOL service even though I never, ever use it nor read my email which is really just spam anyway. So I only put off the problem. But reading this article has spurred me to call in again to cancel the service and stand firm. We'll see what happens. Perhaps I'll say I'm aware of the AOL runaround game and I don't want to play it.

When that's up, I'll get more. AOL just "fired" all the hosties and Community Leaders. They are oh-so-thankful to their "boss" CL who set them up with a special message board. They don't realize that it was done so that they wouldn't start blasting AOHell on the regular message boards. And so they continue to be taken advantage of....oh, and they are also complaining that they haven't gotten their "service certificates" from AOHell. That same boss is telling them that they will get specially designed certificates. But will they really say what they should - "AOL took advantage of me as a CL for ____of years"?

    After my brother died I was managing his remaining bills and I noticed new AOL charges on a credit card.  I cancelled the credit card and called AOL to cancel service.  AOL wouldn't cancel because I wasn't the customer, then they wouldn't cancel because I didn't know the secret that they couldn't tell me what a secret is or they'd be fired.  Then they offered to give the the password so I could take over the account with one months free service.

    Eventually they just hung up on me.

    I'm sure the next time they tried to charge, the credit card would refuse.

    As already repeated by others.  I will never use AOL.

    Given AOL's history of poor service and high prices and their reputation as the ISP for idiots, it's hard for me to feel too sorry for these people who have had trouble with AOL. I've held AOL in complete contempt since I got my first 1400 bps modem. I can't help but think you're getting what you deserve if you're stupid enough to sign up for AOL.

    It may not have been insulting, but it was intellectually *weak*. You didn't have to think about anything new to criticise the parent. How constructive is it really to publicly correct someone's typo? Did it explore a new idea? Did it advance the discussion?

    If you are going to post it for all the World to see than you should at least make it worth the while. Try harder next time.
