Cost of Shopping at eCost Goes Up

Checking out the messages that have accumulated in your spam filter can sometimes pay off. That's the way one reader discovered that web retailer eCost was about to sock him with a membership fee for a "club" that he hadn't joined.

"I have been using eCost.com for some time and have been quite satisfied until now," the reader wrote recently. "During one of my recent purchases, they offered me a 'free' gift. When I examined the offer, I found out that it was one-month free subscription to their premium Bargain Countdown Platinum Club, and that I would be charged an annual fee of $29.95 later on. I was not interested, and I closed the browser window."

A few days later, however, the reader spotted an e-mail from eCost that his spam filter had placed in his junk mail folder. The message, purportedly from eCost CEO Adam Shaffer, informed him his free trial had begun and gave him his password to access his membership benefits. It then stated that:

"Your 30-day trial membership offer expires on Jan 05, 2006. As a convenience, your membership will be automatically renewed for you after your trial membership expires. The primary credit card that you use at eCOST.com will be charged $29.95, extending your Bargain Countdown Platinum membership an additional 12 months."

Not wanting to be charged for a membership he had never signed up for, the reader tried writing the email address provided in the message for canceling prior to January 5th. "I sent a message to the cancellation address, but it bounced back, saying the address did not exist," the reader wrote. "Examining the source of the message, I found out that the address was really a link to a trial cancellation page on their website, so I went to that URL and canceled my membership. Then, just to be sure, I went to my account, changed my credit card on their record to a temporary one with a $5 limit that will expire shortly. And I changed my e-mail address to a non-existing one. If eCost still tries to charge me after Jan 5th, I'll have the charges reversed."

The reader says he has some questions he'd like to ask Shaffer if he had a way of contacting him. "How could they sign my up without my opting in?" he wrote. "Why did they send me an opt-out e-mail address that isn't working? And why would they send my user ID and password in an unencrypted message? I would like to suggest to him that he stop these practices immediately. They just lost a frequent shopper forever - I wouldn't go to eCost ever again if they offered me everything free for life."

I have bought a lot of stuff from eCost, they were really good. I stopped buying stuff when I could never get a price unless I signed up for the Bargain Countdown Club.

Reseller Ratings don't always tell the whole story[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#4)

There is more to a retailer than their rating. There are placings like CompUSA and Best Buy that I think have poor ratings there. Do you avoid shopping there? And when was the last time you positive a positive feedback for a store? People typically only post negatives, which skews the numbers. Obviously there are going to be problems with any store.

Maybe you can explain how Newegg, for one example, has a high score if "people only post negatives".

Though I'm not the one who posted the ratings link, I'll answer your question. Yes, I do avoid shopping at Best Buy and CompUSA whenever possible. If they're selling something I need at a loss-leader price, I'll take it, but otherwise avoid them like the plague they are. (Especially Best Buy)

A month or so ago I noticed an email from Amazon telling me there was a "problem" with my credit card, so I checked it out.

Seems Amazon had signed me up for a "free trial" of their new "Prime Free" service at $79/year, and as part of the "free trial" had tried to verify the card they had on file for me. Fortunately, that card had expired and thus couldn't be used, and I was able to successfully "un-trial" the service.

Amazon quickly verified that I had cancelled, but I have no idea how I got into the "free trial" in the first place.

A few days after Ed wrote about my experience with e-cost, I received a catalog from e-cost with their street address on it. I decided to write a short letter to Adam Shaffer. I included copies of Ed's column and the bounced e-mail message. Honestly, I did not have much hope for a reply. I was really surprised to get a phone message from their corporate offices. The usual phone tags, etc., then I received a call from a very polite and pleasant gentleman, Brian Blackburn. He apologized for the mishap, saying that about 4,500 customers received the same message that I got. He said that they addressed the issue and corrected it. He offered me a $50 coupon for a future purchase. I kindly declined and suggested that he could donate $50 to his choice of charity.

He followed it up with the e-mail message at the bottom. If you were happy with e-cost, continue to deal with them. At least they listen and respond.

That email contained both incorrect text and incorrect cancellation instructions and never should have gone out. I am completely agreed with your comments. Actually, I have had same experiences. All bad prices don't help those of us trying to save a buck. How could shopping engines make such mistakes? One of the biggest bonuses of shopping online is being able to quickly and easily compare prices--isn't it? After all, shopping comparison engines exist for that exact purpose: to help you find the lowest prices quickly. Simple, shopping engines are only as accurate as the last time they checked a retailer's site. To make matters worse, holiday competition is creating roller-coaster pricing on items. That's why eCOST and other shopping bots had a freshness date. When you scour its database for the best price on any item, it notes the last time it updated the price. Better yet, try a site that uses automated agents to scour the Web in real time. These huge prices are seldom wrong. When you search at Bottomdollar.com, for example, it checks prices on the fly. This guarantees the advertised price. You might think Web sites are pulling a dirty trick. Are they trying to entice you with low prices, to get you to spend more money in their e-shops? But what if they list a price that is actually higher than what the retailer lists? But even when the advertised price is right, things can still go wrong. There's nothing like paying double for the convenience of shopping in your slippers. "Shopping bots are a relatively new technology that (have been) slowly evolving over the last couple years.

I purchased a Bluetooth headset for about $30. Order number E7842065 I opened the box following the instructions and the device did not work. This is the first day after I recieved the package in the mail. I called ecost and I was told I need to contact Motorola and open a case, get a confirmation number from them and then it will be reviewed. THIS IS TOTAL GARBAGE!! I WAS SHIPPED BAD DEVICE FROM THE BEGINNING AND NEVER GOT A CHANCE TO GET IT REPLACED OR REFUNDED. Why should I have to contact anyone, the device was delivered bad directly from the warehouse. To top that off, I was denied the option to talk to a manager and the person I spoke with was EXTREMELY RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL. Rest assured, I WILL NEVER SHOP AT ECOST AGAIN. I was an avid shopper of the site, but I could not get help from customer service over a $30 item that never worked. I am in the market for an MAC Laptop, But I REFUSE TO BUY ANYTHING FROM ECOST AGAIN. IF I CAN'T GET HELP WITH A $30 DOLLAR THAT NEVER WORKED, I AM NOT GOING TO TRUST ECOST WITH A $1000 PURCHASE

I made the biggest mistake of my life when I decided to place an order for a projector from Ecost.com. Upon receipt I immediately noticed the projector not only didn't work when I plugged it in, but it also did not include any instructions, cables, etc. etc. So I immediately called them to get an RMA number and sent the projector back to them just as they require as well as sending it with signature required and insured return receipt. My real problem began when I returned a $650.00 projector almost a year ago using their RMA and my return receipt. I've called them for 51 weeks now, and I get the same set of lies every time. I can never speak to a supervisor because the phone jockeys will not transfer me. They (supervisors) are always in a meeting....their phone line is busy, or they have already left for the day. And the biggest brush off is when they say that they can transfer you to their voice mail box. I can guarantee you that the promised return phone call or email will never happen. And best of all for the worst brush off I am always told "the check will be mailed in the morning." As a retired U.S. Army Soldier, I can honestly say that I feel like I was treated better by the enemy than I am by eCost.com. I came home after serving my country proudly, and receiving a 100% medical retirement due to injuries while serving my country and protecting my fellow Americans, and now have to deal with the real terrorist of the US economy. We, as citizens work very hard for our money and then have to fight a loosing battle to regain what is truely ours. And although I may have been loosing this battle for the last year, the war still has not been lost. This is why I am sharing my story with my fellow Americans. Please do not do business with a company that steals from Disabled U.S. Army Soldiers. I don't know if there is anything you can do for me or if this company is truly full of theives. That sounds just so ridiculous. But sure it does happen every now and then. I never like the idea that things you signed up for gets automatically renewed. Isn't it basic courtesy/ common sense of the seller part to confirm/ check with the buyer. It's sad that they're after our money after all and wouldn't entertain such cancellation deals.

Now I will be checking my spam filters often to avoid such problems. I had a similiar experience before, but they had me opted out when I decline the offer. Si, I should say I'm kind of lucky. I had friends who shared the same problems too. And only to realised when the subscription had been renewed, and their money deducted. And when they asked for a cancellation/ refund, nothing was done.
