Dell Has Three Prices For One Part

By Ed Foster, Section The Gripelog
Posted on Mon Nov 07, 2005 at 12:12:38 AM PDT

Dell's pricing has always been very much "subject to change" at a moment's notice. But one enterprise customer of Dell's recently discovered that, subject to who you are and what you think you're buying, two or more prices can exist at the same time for the same thing.

"We've got a Dell Precision M20 notebook we needed a docking station for," the reader recently wrote. "A search of the Dell website while logged into our corporate account returned Manufacturer Part # 8W925, Dell Part # 310-3995, $417.57 as the docking station for the M20. However, further searching revealed Manufacturer Part # 8W925, Dell Part # 310-2873, $348.74, which fits the M60 among others, but was not listed for the M20. A review of the details and technical specifications revealed the devices to be one in the same."

Same part number, same technical specifications, so why would the almost $70 difference in price, the reader wondered. "But it gets better, or worse, depending on your point of view," the reader wrote. "I went to Dell.com and did a search for 8W925 and found it in the Home & Home Office section, selling for $299.99. So, depending upon where on Dell.com you find it -- which depends on your account access -- you can buy the same docking station for $299.99, $348.74, or $417.57!"

The reader inquired about this with a Dell sales rep and was assured that, in spite of the three different list prices, the price to his company would actually be lower. "The price of either Dell part will be the same for us, they said, because our price is based on the cost of the docking station to Dell," the reader wrote. "Because we are a large buyer, this makes sense."

But all the different prices for different kinds of customers left the reader feeling less than warm and fuzzy about Dell. "Why does Dell have to sell the same product three different ways and charge a different price for each?" the reader. "It seems just a little too underhanded to this generally pro-capitalistic person. More and more often I'm finding things like this with Dell that are turning me off to the company."

This has been going on for some time with mail-order catalog sales. There is often different prices for catalogs shipped to different regions (even though the orders are shipped from the same warehouse). Also, I know that one store (Harbor Freight Tools??) that has item numbers ending in a letter unique to the catalog that's been mailed to you. Someone figured out a way of ordering online using the item number but varying the last letter until the lowest price showed up. Come to think of it, why is this any different from when you sign up for cell phone service? The plan price is constant but the phone price changes depending on if you sign up in the store, over the phone, or online. This is why so many companies live in fear of Google...

I am in food service and I know soda companies have for years had many price points depending on how much they could get. Complain and you could get a lower price. A few years back Pepsi won a lawsuit in WI allowing it to change the price it charges to a customer if that customer raised his price. I also know auto part stores had three prices, retail which only idiots payed, normal price and what mechanics paid. I think lumber yards have a homeowner and contractor rates. And how about airlines? Wait a few minutes and the price will change for the same service. Dell is doing nothing unusual

Agreed...Years ago I worked in a chemical plant that made, among other things, floor tile adhesive. We would make a 400 gallon batch of the stuff and pack it into 1 gallon pails. 200 of the pails were labeled "800" for ceramic tile and "not suitable for parquet flooring" while the other 200 gallons were labeled "850" for parquet flooring and "not suitable for ceramic tile." And, of course, the 850 was more expensive.

I call that fraud. I don't care how common this tyhpe of practice is, it stinks and I don't think it should be legal.

Economists call it differential pricing. Seems somehow unfair, doesn't it? A classic example is airline tickets.

The advice I've always heard for Dell is to spec out your part on all the parts of their site: enterprise, small business, and home. They're all totally independant and run different specials, sales, prices, and coupons, and chances are good you'll save a lot in the long run if you're a big dell customer. And then check to see if it's listed under another model's umbrella. It's a PITA, I have no idea where they get the wildly different prices from, and usually no matter what this sales rep says, they absolutely will not give you the lower price unless you find it first.

Fortunately Dell doesn't seem to care where you buy from, unlike some companies that will hide or rigidly enforce pricing rules.

This is called willingness to pay, and is a long-established practice by nearly every free enterprise. If you don't want it for $417, don't buy it, maybe you'll find a lower price. Dell is obviously catering to different markets with different WTP's.

The Los Angeles Times has three rates too: The idiot rate which is printed in the paper - Daily Plus (which strangely includes only 43 of 52 Sunday papers) at $4.50/wk The promotional rate you get from mailings or from their reps at malls and trade shows - either $2.99/wk by normal billing or $2.65/wk by credit card but WATCH OUT! Billing by credit card is "for up to 26 weeks, after that your credit card will be billed every 8 or 12 weeks, depending on the service type, at the regular weekly rate in effect at the time your discount expires, unless you notify The Times otherwise." The real rate, which you get not by calling the subscription desk but by calling Customer Service to cancel your subscription after (or, if you're smart) before you've been screwed by the credit card deal above - $2.00/wk for full service 7 days a week. This is only available by credit card, and of course, requires that you be most vigilant about your charges, but if you threaten to quit at the end of each subscription, they always sign you up again.

pricing at Dell[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#10)
by petermac on Thu Nov 10, 2005 at 12:10:59 PM PDT

We have run into this many times. We were recently looking at getting a 24" flat panel for a customer (really nice unit by the way). The price varied by over $200CDN depending on whether we bought it with a computer, on a special from the web page or seperately from our sales rep. Do I have a problem, no. It's the web equivalent of haggling for the price of something in a store. However when I run into things where they have started to emulate IBM and HP where I can't get a set of drive rails for their 2800 series servers unless I buy a tape drive or extra CDROM drive from them then I have a problem.

During the sixties, I drove an old Cadillac I inherited from my father's estate. My backyard neighbor, who worked in the parts department for General Motors, told me that Chevy parts and Cadillac parts were often identical, except for price.

True[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#12)
by tcsbiz on Mon Nov 14, 2005 at 11:37:59 AM PDT

This is very true today. I'm working on a project for a local dealership. When they check for price parts from a manufacturer, they can do it by part number, VIN, or make and model. The highest-priced models share many parts with the lowest-priced models. The prices are based on the model. The theory is the same as taxes. The assumption is that if the customer owns a high-priced vehicle, he can afford to pay a higher price for the part even if a different customer with an economy model pays up to 50% less. The only time a higher-paying customer is given a lower price, is if they complain. The dealership only pays one wholesale price for the part. They base their retail prices on the MSRP when they do their lookup.

Here's an example many of you could take advantage of: Call Pitney Bowes and complain that your mailing machine is too expensive or the maintaince contract is too high. The guy on the phone (1st person, no higherups even) had the authority to knock 25-30% off the maintaince agreement just cause i thought it was too much!! Threaten to move to the other guys machine or get bumped higher up the chain of command and it can go even lower. Yes i detest Pitney ever since they charged me a surcharge to pay in CASH in PERSON, get every penny you can :) On the other hand in medical supplies virtually everyone gets a diferent price. Our vendors do it to us and we have to do same to compete. All stages in the chain play one vendor off another to lower the price.

I just found Dell Part# 8W925 for $799[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#14)

In the original article above the part used as an example went for $299.99, $348.74, or $417.57. It felt like a treasure hunt as I went looking for myself, and I quickly found several other prices including $629! http://tinyurl.com/aex4p I even found it for $799 but only on a Dell page in Google's cache. http://tinyurl.com/cax8n
