Out of Options With TurboTax

By Ed Foster, Section The Gripelog
Posted on Mon Jan 31, 2005 at 09:54:05 AM PDT

You'd think TurboTax would be the one Intuit product that wouldn't be subject to any sunsetting tactics, since customers have to buy the new version every year anyway. So I was a bit surprised when my recent story about Quicken sunsets prompted some TurboTax 2004 customers to report that Intuit seems to have retired a few features of the tax program.

One TurboTax feature that's apparently no more in the 2004 version is the ability to automatically import files from sunsetted versions of Quicken. "I use Quicken 2002, and I received the Intuit letter advising me I had until April 19th to convert," one reader wrote. "I thought I was fine. Then, I installed my TurboTax 2004 -- Premiere edition, no less. As I started my return, the program asked me if I wanted to import my data from Quicken. Well, of course I did. After beginning the import function, the program then told me, in no uncertain terms, that it was 'unable to import data from Quicken 2002 or earlier versions.' Well, I guess April 19th comes early this year. Now, not only will I not be able to use online services, but also I must print out my entire 2004 expense profile and then manually enter the data. I have been using TurboTax for over ten years and have been very happy with it. Until now."

Another loyal TurboTax user found Intuit limiting his options in a different way. "I have used TurboTax since 1993, even through their notorious registration/spyware problems, because I trusted the product," the reader wrote. "I don't run my own business, so the Basic version is all I ever needed or wanted. In the fall of 2004, I had a unique opportunity to do a same-day sale of stock from a stock option plan from years ago. No problem -- I even tried a 'test' return using my 2003 copy of TurboTax, and the program worked flawlessly. All the questions I needed popped up, numbers went into the appropriate forms, even a series of help items -- everything I had come to expect from TurboTax. Great; just buy the 2004 version in January and I'm all set."

When the reader bought the Basic version he noticed a list of features on the back. "Under 'stock options' is a bullet that indicates the Premier version has 'Extra help for stock options.' Well, I don't need extra help, just what was built into the Basic version. Wrong! When I told the interview session I had stock options, it immediately popped up with a message that this feature was only available in the Premier version and would I care to upgrade online for $40? Of course not. But I guess I'm stuck."

What really bothered the reader was not the $40 upgrade but the elimination of actual functionality in the Basic version. "My previous experience with TurboTax has been that differences between the versions were that Premier and Deluxe just offered you more bells and whistles," the reader wrote. "They had extra features that were nice, but you could always do everything with Basic. Given that last year's package contained the stock option functionality in the Basic version, and this year's does not, I wonder what missing functionality we'll find is 'extra help' next January?"

The only way these days to let the company know that you're dissatisfied with their product or service is to vote with your wallet.

This product was recommended by a reader over a similar Intuit issue on the GripeLine last year. I gave it a try and was pleased with the results.

It's free and it's easy. I only used it for personal tax prep work, so I can't vouch for additional functionality for those with small businesses or corporate use.

I've been using TaxAct for 6 years now, so add my voice to the happy users.  My taxes are simple enough (no stock holdings, our deductions have yet to exceed the standard) I don't even need all the bells and whistles IT has.  I suspect it will move right along with us if we do start getting more complex with our tax situation.  At $20 for the state and federal versions plus one free filing, it's the best deal out there.  And NO DRM!

TaxAct may be great: I wouldn't know, since I haven't used it. And I won't, since I got spam advertising TaxAct and 2nd Story Software (sent by a third party, InBoxRebates.com) this morning. I don't deal with spammers.

Not every company advertised in spam knowingly signs up with spammers. There are enough unethical dealers out there that a few might sneakily slip through the cracks or turn to spam after traditional means fail. They may cut the company off by your report, thus doing a part to rid the world of spam. :p

Turn over the spam information you got to taxact. How they deal with it will show how worthy a company they are.

This was not spam from a dealer: this was very definately spam that 2nd Story Software/TaxAct had contracted a third party to send, and which included their corporate address and phone numbers.

"Turn over the spam information you got to taxact. How they deal with it will show how worthy a company they are."
They were copied on the original spam complaint I sent to the third party mailer, and have not responded.

I was so mad at Intuit from all the things I've read about them that I switched to TaxCut last year and it imported my previous TurboTax data and worked wonderfully, plus it was cheaper than TurboTax. In looking at TaxAct, it appears that the free version won't import data from a previous year. Also, can't find out if it will import from other products on the paid versions. Can anyone provide confirmation/denial of this? To avoid rekeying, I'd pay money for TaxCut again. David

When TurboTax installed the spyware two years ago, I vowed never again.  The only way to deal with companies that use product activation and spyware is to hit them in the bottom line and make an example of them.  And as the parent said, TaxCut is cheaper anyway.  When I registered the product and they asked why I purchased it, I wrote, "No product activation or spyware like TurboTax," just so they understand.

I said that last year and this year as well. I put 'No product activation' as my reason for purchase. Frankly, I imagine so many people have said this that I was a little surprised it wasn't a listed option & I had to use the Other field.

Oh, I like how the current TaxCut installs. When installing, it tosses up a dialog box that asks you if this is a legal copy. One question, plain, simple, no volumes of legalese, no mention of repurcussions. Call it more of an awareness thing than anything else.

Intuit: Customers as money trees to be shaken down[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#4)
by tsingher on Tue Feb 01, 2005 at 09:55:30 AM PDT

Ed- What frosts me more than the stories you tell about software companies is the customer stories where a customer says "well I guess I just have to keep buying the product." Intuit long ago revealed itself as a company who sees customers as money trees to be harvested regularly, rather than as people to be convenienced and served. It started with all of the desktop icons that magically appear on the desktop after installation. Then there were the popups INSIDE the program touting some new way Intuit would take your money. Then the agressive strong-arm tactics to upgrade EVERY time you call tech support. Then it was product activation. Now it's sunsetting. I stopped buying Intuit products long ago. I'm a computer consultant and I strongly recommend against Intuit products to my clients. I switched to TaxCut three years ago when Intuit added product activation. I don't like TaxCut as much as I liked my old TurboTax, but it doesn't shake me down for money. And it does the job. Oh, and it imports my Quicken 2000 data just fine. People who continue to support Intuit are responsible for their own misery and, in my opinion, are the reason that software companies continue to get away with things. If other software companies watch Intuit go down in flames from overreaching, they will be much more cautious about overreaching themselves. But your readers continue to shrug their shoulders and say "oh well, I guess I have no other choice..." Phooey.

Several years ago, my dial-up monitor I used detected TurboTax attempting to send information it claimed it wouldn't. I pulled the plug and decided to create my "isolation" machine - the one I keep my bank records and taxes on that doesn't connect to the internet. I downloaded updates and transfered them to the isolation machine. Then came activation, which negated the tactic. I switched to TaxCut, and have been happy. And I never file via e-file. I mail a paper copy. When my e-file doesn't go through a private company or contractor, but direct to the government via encrypted or direct dial means, I will use it. Until then, Uncle Sam gets a letter. I don't care about the delay. I gave up on Quicken. I use 2000 as a check register. I use the banks software online. It has eliminated the "errors" I was getting from the upgrade cycle. So Intuit is gone, for lack of Intui-ition.

2 years ago I got fed up with Intuit and bought TaxCut. Thank God. I go to Staples and pay like $20 for the Fed basic box, get rebates (which I have used and have always been honored) for my money back on the state box plus 1 free e-filing, which I use. It imports from other programs, it prompts me with suggestions as I'm doing my return, and I don't have to deal with another joke software company like Intuit. I don't work for H&R Block. I'm an IT guy who deals with computer BS all day long, and don't want the computer-related headaches to continue at home.

Intuit: don't say "subscription license"[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#10)
by Egroeg on Tue Feb 01, 2005 at 01:59:04 PM PDT

Don't tell anyone, it's Intuit's secret version of annual subscription-based licensing for software. Avoid using the word "subscription"; the customers don't like that!

All the big consumer software companies want to switch to subscription-based licensing.  The US PC software market is saturating.  Without either subscription-based licensing or continuous product innovations to extract regular income streams from existing customers, company sales revenue would deminish. Innovation is expensive and hard to do with any regularity; subscription-based licensing is ultimately the more reliable and desired solution.

Problem: customers don't like the risk of being held hostage by subscriptions.  What happens to the software (and more importantly, the data) if the company goes under.  Customers aren't going for it.

So sly companies like Intuit will try to sell their software via annual updates with sunset features, prompting subscription-like payments without calling it subscription-licensing. If Intuit is successful in this strategy, expect more of the same from the likes of Microsoft and others.... real-soon-now...

TurboTax is a no-win situation. You can bet that Intuit is only going to become more and more obnoxious over time. I switched from TurboTax to Taxcut a few years ago and have never looked back. Before using TurboTax again, I would return to paper forms and a bunch of sharp pencils. I'm hoping that someday a reasonably priced product is available that will allow me to replace Quicken 99 as well. (No, don't bother mentioning Microsoft products... they are as bad or worse than Intuit.)

by Anonymous User on Tue Feb 01, 2005 at 08:19:16 PM PDT

I've been so fed up with Intuit I tried TaxCut last year but had a lot of compatibility problems and no real support. So I reluctantly went back to TurboTax. But at least, based on the recent Intuit discussion here, went out and bought MS Money instead of updating my Quicken 2002. I like it much better, though it still sunsets the interactive online support in about two years. Still, if we move as a flock away from Intuit they will capitulate, just like they did with copy protection in Turbo Tax a couple of years ago. Putting up with their abuse should not even be considered.

Likewise. I am also voting with my wallet. Intuit can no longer have any part of my discretionary income. Not now. Not ever. Actually, I am surprised to NOT hear anyone think that their practice regarding failure to import valid data simply because of Quicken's age - this is extortion in my book. Isn't that illegal? Sunsetting isn't really the issue there. What they are talking about is not allowing the transfer of valid personal data from your checkbook mgmt software into their current version of tax software - simply because they wanted to do that. After all, just what is the truly valid reason to deny that transfer? Format change in the data structure? Why, on earth, would anyone do that to surprise the customer just when that customer needs it most? And was that specifically spelled out on the 2004 Turbotax editions? No. (I'm holding that box in my hand this very moment.) It says "Imports from Quicken, Quickbooks, Microsoft Money and ItsDeductible software" - nowhere on the box does it say that it will only do this import with specific versions. This is out and out fraud. They should be taken to court over this.

Out of Options With TurboTax[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#21)
by Anonymous User on Sun Feb 06, 2005 at 12:10:33 AM PDT

Intuit is adopting the same business model as Symantec - slowly remove (or sunset) features entirely or move them from the basic edition to the premium edition. If one compares the original Norton Systems Works (published by Symantec) with each subsequent release (2001, 2002, etc.) you will find less features and functionality while the cost has gone up and the online renewal fees have increased by 1000%. Intuit knows a good money making thing when they see it and this is an easier way to get their hands into consumer's wallets without get slapped silly for dumb product activation schemes. Vote with your wallet is the way to go - at least with Symantec. Never again will they get a dime from me. But I have used both TaxCut Premium and TurboTax Premium and find that TurboTax is still more thorough and polished when dealing with rental property, educational expenses and a self-owned business. I do tax returns for several in my family plus in-laws. And the fact that you can save tax returns as a PDF file for future print copies without loading the software again is a real plus and a feature TaxCut doesn't have (as least not for tax year 2003 which is the last year I used TaxCut).

Stock Options Issues[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#22)
by Anonymous User on Fri Feb 18, 2005 at 06:44:03 PM PDT

While I am completely in agreement over the general sleaziness of Intuit, I did want to comment on the stock options issue mentioned in the original posting.

In the fall of 2004, I had a unique opportunity to do a same-day sale of stock from a stock option plan from years ago. [...]
Under 'stock options' is a bullet that indicates the Premier version has 'Extra help for stock options.' Well, I don't need extra help, just what was built into the Basic version. Wrong! When I told the interview session I had stock options, it immediately popped up with a message that this feature was only available in the Premier version and would I care to upgrade online for $40? Of course not. But I guess I'm stuck.

Well, in fact, what was needed was the "extra help". Same-day sales of options do not require any special treatment at all; they are reported on the W-2 form. Not knowing this cost Ed's source the $40 (which may be less in practice, if he also needs a state program and remembers to file for the rebate included with the Premier version).

I have an unfortunately complex stock options situation. The 2004 Turbotax is handling all the essential information, which does require alternate forms and some pretty tricky calculations, exactly as before. What is missing this year, pertinent to my situation, is the "worksheet" which allows you to fill certain values in to calculate an adjustment value. Since I know the tax particulars of my situation in depth, this isn't a problem for me; I can calculate the adjustment by hand and enter it into the questionnaire. But I could certainly see where someone who hasn't put the hours of study into the situation would be much better off with the "extra help."

According to Ed's original post, one of the grippers complained that they could not import their data into TurboTax because they were running a version of Quicken before 2003. That's true. However, the TurboTax video says that you can still import data from earlier versions of Quicken, but you first have to export your Quicken data to a format that TurboTax can import. This doesn't sound too unreasonable to me.

Isn't that a pointless statement?[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#26)

So you can import older Quicken data into TurboTax if you first export it into a format that TurboTax can import. Hmm, doesn't that mean you have to export the Quicken data into a newer version of Quicken data? (That is, upgrade and then export?) Or will TurboTax import a QIF file containing all your finances for a year?

We pay the IRS to make filing taxes easy. Seems we shouldn't have to pay Inuit to do that too. I'll explain more to you here: http://thebigball.blogspot.com/2005/04/if-irs-fulfilled-its-mission-thered-be.html
