Quicker and Quicker Quicken Sunsets

By Ed Foster, Section Columns
Posted on Tue Jan 18, 2005 at 12:30:27 AM PDT

Dear Quicken Customer: Intuit is proud to announce the release of Quicken 2009 Spring Edition. In accordance with our new sunset policy, Quicken 2009 Winter Edition users have one week to upgrade before their bank accounts are frozen. Just another way of showing how much we at Intuit value your business and our firm belief that we have you over a barrel. -- Regards, Quicken Customer Care.

OK, the above is not precisely what the letter Quicken 2001 and Quicken 2002 customers started receiving last week said. I think it captures the spirit, though. What the letter does say is that, under Intuit's ever-changing , users of these two products have until April 19th to upgrade to Quicken 2005 if they wish to continue on-line banking. Thus features that were essential to many customers choosing to buy Quicken in the first place -- such as downloading account data from their financial institutions, on-line bill pay, and getting stock quotes -- are essentially being turned off for users of the 2001 and 2002 versions.

"They're doing it again," wrote one angry reader. "I just received a letter from Intuit advising that my Quicken 2002 will no longer work with any on-line features, including on-line banking. I've seen Quicken 2005 on some client systems. I hate it. It's replete with advertising and sales promos, and much of the old control-key functionality has gone away, too. I can't help but feel they really have us by the proverbial short hairs, because any realistic alternatives are more trouble than they are worth."

As we know, some of these customers were already feeling squeezed by Intuit's decision to drop QIF-file import capability for Quicken 2005 (see Intuit Pits Its Customers Against Its Partners). "I purchased Quicken because it was required at the time for on-line banking at my S&L," wrote one reader. "The S&L refused to pay the extortion Intuit wants for using its new format, so they told me not to upgrade to Quicken 2005. But now Intuit says there's no more support if I don't upgrade. Gee, what's wrong with this picture?"

Even readers who aren't really impacted reacted to the letter with some strong language. "I don't actually use the on-line services via Quicken anymore, or I'd be calling my lawyer," wrote another reader. "The idea they can arbitrarily choose to just cut people off this way is offensive. Intuit, I've got two words for you: grand larceny."

Apparently, few are buying Intuit's standard explanation for its sunset policies. "Retirement of online services for older Quicken versions lets us focus our resources on supporting our more current products, which are used by the majority of Quicken customers," is the way Quicken Customer Care letter puts it. Of course, the elimination of critical features in older versions virtually guarantees that the majority of Quicken customers must use more current products, but I guess that's just another way of saying what Intuit means.

Although Intuit has been doing its sunset thing with QuickBooks for a number of years, there seem to be some difference with what it's doing now with Quicken. The payroll and invoicing features in QuickBooks were converted to paid on-line services very gradually, and those were of critical importance to a limited minority of customers. Otherwise, users of sunsetted versions of QuickBooks mostly just have to learn how to get along without Intuit's less-than-stellar support.

In contrast, the sunsetting of Quicken has come on fast and seems to be accelerating. When Quicken 2001 and 2002 were the current versions, there was no hint to customers that critical features of the program could be turned off in less than four years. And it's interesting to note that Intuit does not say specifically when Quicken 2003, 2004 or 2005 will in turn be sunsetted.

And there's reason to wonder. Figuring from when each product was released until its official sunset, Quicken 98 users got to use their product more than six years. Quicken 99 got five-plus years, Quicken 2000 four years and eight months, Quicken 2001 four years and seven months, and Quicken 2002 three years and seven months.

Do you see a pattern there? Perhaps the only question is whether my prognostication for 2009 is overestimating how long it will take Intuit to get to mandatory quarterly upgrades. If Intuit's customers, and the customers' banks, continue to act like Intuit does indeed have them over a barrel, it could be much sooner than that. After all, as I'm sure has occurred to the folks at Intuit, real sunsets happen once a day.

Quicken 2002 lifespan[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#1)
by nytmare on Tue Jan 18, 2005 at 06:34:11 AM PDT

It looks like Quicken 2003 was released August 2002. That means in July 2002, Quicken 2002 was the current product version. If Quicken 2002 is to be killed in April 2005, its minimum lifespan is only 2 years 9 months.

Another reason to switch to MS Money and Taxcut[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#2)

Relatively quick sunsetting is a regular pratice in the corporate world, but for home users? I would wonder why they would give their current users reason to look around at their options that much earlier.

Switch to Check Book Balancer (or CBB) or some other Free or Open Source Software solution. And use an online tax preparation website (I have heard of these). For instance turbotax: http://www.turbotax.com/lp/2a.html?source=gl4lp2&venue=goog-srch&kw=tax+online
Downside: Owned by Intuit

I wimped out and ordered the "new" version. I am afraid that the news may really be worse than reported in Ed's column. For example, Intuit does not tell you that in upgrading to the new program that your data files become unusable should you decide to resume with the old program. From reading the product description on Intuit's webpage, several of the features on Quicken Deluxe 2001 may have evaporated as a means of forcing you to upgrade to the "Premier" version. Quicken 2001, when it is reinstalled, requires an "update", I assume that your ability to reinstall an old version of Quicken will also disappear. Additionally, the program seems of have evolved into a means to deliver advertising to you AND to encourage you to subscribe on a fee basis for "other services". What is also irritating about all of this is that you have a working program where Intuit is maliciously spending program resources, time, and money to stop your program from working.

Any good alternatives to Quicken out there?[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#4)
by Anonymous User on Tue Jan 18, 2005 at 09:58:53 AM PDT

Quicken 98 was great.  I used it for years and it did everything I needed it to.  I even continued using it past the end of support when you could no longer reinstall and download patches for it, but instead had to copy it entirely from one HD to another when upgrading your system.

Finally I broke down and gave a new version a try... It's either Quicken 2003 or 2004.  It's less customizeable, does some very annoying things automatically with no ability to disable them, and insists on displaying little ads for various Quicken services they want you to buy.

So... what I'm wondering now is, what alternatives are out there?  Is there a good open source alternative that will import Quicken data files?

Yes, there is at least one[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#13)
by Anonymous User on Tue Jan 18, 2005 at 11:13:39 AM PDT

I've been using gnucash (www.gnucash.org) for about 3 years. It is a double entry accounting program that can import qif, and also get stock quotes along with many other features. But it is only available for OSX, Linux, and other flavors of UNIX. If you can't or won't switch, try looking through sourceforge.net. There is a large number of financial projects there, and many for windows, but I haven't personally looked at anything that doesn't run on Linux.

Gnucash and banks[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#22)
by Anonymous User on Tue Jan 18, 2005 at 01:51:37 PM PDT

I wonder what it would take the major banks to get involved with development of gnucash. Banks should realize that Intuit isn't their friend. They could do themselves a big favor by working on developing gnucash, including a windows version, and free themselves of Intuit. For the record, I use Quicken 2001 and because I don't use online banking I have no plans to upgrade. From what I've read about 2005, there isn't a compelling reason to switch.

GnuCash[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#26)
by Anonymous User on Tue Jan 18, 2005 at 04:33:10 PM PDT

I don't think that banks will care enough to support GnuCash. Like Intuit, they're goal is to make money, not to make banking convenient for small, individual customers. I wouldn't be optimistic about help from the banks.

Banks should worry about Quicken[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#57)
by Anonymous User on Thu Feb 17, 2005 at 07:50:26 AM PDT

I'm a freelance Notary Public in addition to being a programmer, and one of the things I do as a Notary is that on occasion I get orders from banks and mortgage companies to go out to a customer's home or office to witness them signing the paperwork. (Certain documents in a loan transaction must be notarized, which requires it be done in the presence of the Notary.) One of the companies that is offering home loans is Quicken Loans. Now I'm not sure if they are simply a mortgage company or they are a bank, but it means Quicken is a competitor of the banks that use its on-line service. And in view of how fairly easy it is for a bank to set up its own on-line service (based on the number that are doing it, and on it apparently not being all that difficult to design a web site to allow on-line banking), tying in with Quicken is on the order of competitors to Microsoft allowing it to dictate terms for them, the result being eventually your competitor will eat you alive.

I think financial institutions need to have serious considerations about how Quicken/Intuit runs its business, before they run them out of it.

Alternatives to Quicken[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#14)
by vroberts on Tue Jan 18, 2005 at 12:12:26 PM PDT

I just switched from Quicken 2002 to MoneyDance, www.moneydance.com. I am using Win98SE but MOneyDance runs under Windows, Linux and I think Mac OS. The interface is a bit different but all the functions I need, including stock quote downloads, are there and the program is "clean". You can try it for free to see how it imports your QIF file.

I've been using moneydance for years on Mac OS X (and for a little bit on OS 9 prior to that), it's very nice. Does everything I need (which isn't much) and the developer is very responsive to bug reports and feature requests. It does online banking -- mostly with banks using OFX rather than quicken's just different enough to require a license agreement QFX. My bank doesn't support either so I can't say how well that part works.

QuickBooks[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#5)

The horrible way Intuit treats customers is the reason we have not upgraded to any newer version of Quickbooks than 2000 Pro. It does everything we need and I would probably upgrade our 3 copies but am afraid that Intuit will find a way to charge me for something I get in the program now. Sorry Intuit, you are your own worst enemy when I consider upgrades. The only problem is that if I need to re-install QuickBooks 2000 I'll bet Intuit will turn off the activation feature at some point and I won't be able to use the program again.

Help save Quicken .qif format[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#6)
by Anonymous User on Tue Jan 18, 2005 at 10:05:15 AM PDT

I use and am satisfied with Quicken Deluxe 99. All but one of my credit card issuers and banks permit .qif downloads, but I fear this will change. The logical next step for Intuit after dropping .qif from Quicken will be to encourage financial institutions to make it unavailable for downloads, thereby forcing users to upgrade. I urge people to contact their financial institutions, as I have done, to say that .qif is important and that you do not want Intuit to dictate how your data is accessible.

I do think it would be legitimate for Quicken to offer reasonably priced subscriptions to its data services rather than forcing users of older versions to upgrade.

QIF convertor[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#48)
by Reziac on Tue Jan 25, 2005 at 01:32:18 PM PDT

It occurs to me that what's needed for folks who prefer not to be extorted into a newer version of Quicken, is a utility that intercepts and converts their data on the fly, as they exchange it with their bank. IOW, an automated QIF <==> OFX convertor.

I'm not a coder, but ISTM this isn't any more complex than using some existing convertor and a little scripting.

Discover Card to QIF converter[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#63)
by Anonymous User on Thu Apr 21, 2005 at 06:35:36 PM PDT

Below is an Excel macro that will take data from the Discover Card web site (a table of text) and convert it to QIF format.  You can then import the QIF file into Quicken 2001 or 2002.

  1.  Copy the table of data from the discovercard.com website
  2.  Paste the data into Excel
  3.  Save the Excel file as FormatQuicken.xls
  4.  create this macro in Excel
  5.  Run this macro

It is a crude macro but it works!

Excel QIF conversion[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#78)
by fem80 on Mon May 07, 2007 at 06:46:54 AM PDT

If the copying from Discover card to Excel returns data in one column use the following code to delete empty rows, copy data from rows to columns and format the data into QIF.  The code is run in the following steps (starting out in debug mode):
  1. Remove the empty rows by setting the break point to the beginning of the section of the code that moves the data from rows to columns.
  2. Do a quick visual check to remove any rows containing data other than the transaction date, the date posted, the merchant, or the transaction type.  I checked for any entry beginning with a number and removed it.
  3. Copy this worksheet to another worksheet to have as a backup to make debugging easier. Then go back to the first worksheet.
  4. In the macro, set variable "unformated" to 1 to allow the section of the code that moves data from rows to columns to run, set a break point to the beginning of the formatting section of the code, and run to breakpoint.
  5. Ensure that you get four columns of data per statement entry (transaction date-date posted-merchant-transaction type).  If not, check which statement entries have extra data entries (for ex. Gas purchases have an extra entry with a number identifier representing the Gas Station) - these must be removed.
  6. Copy the second worksheet to the first worksheet and make the manual changes required (such as removing rows or adding rows with needed information) then go back to step 4.
  7. Once you get four columns of data in the right  format (transaction date-date posted-merchant-transaction type), delete one of the date columns (I deleted the date posted column), insert a column before the transaction type column, select the merchant column and from the Data menu do a "Text to Columns" action delimeted on "$" to parse the merchant data into the merchant name and the dollar amount spent.
  8. Change "unformated" to 0 to comment out this section, get out of debugging mode, and run the entire code to get a text file with the data formatted in QIF.

Sub CreateQIF_File()

    Dim LastCellRow, CurrRow, RowCount As Long
    Dim LastValue As String

    Windows("FormatQuicken.xls").Activate
    Sheets("Sheet1").Select
    LastCellRow = RealLastCell(Sheets("Sheet1")).Row

    'Delete empty rows
    RowIndex = 1
    Do While (RowIndex < LastCellRow)
        If Cells(RowIndex, 1).Value = "" Then
            Set currentcell = Cells(RowIndex, 1)
            currentcell.EntireRow.Delete
            LastCellRow = LastCellRow - 1
            RowIndex = RowIndex - 1
        End If
        RowIndex = RowIndex + 1
    Loop

    'Move data from rows to columns
    unformated = 0
    If unformated Then
        LastCellRow = RealLastCell(Sheets("Sheet1")).Row
        i = 1   'row
        j = 1   'col
        RowIndex = 1    'row copying from
        Do While (RowIndex < LastCellRow)
            row_fin = RowIndex + 3
            For k = RowIndex To row_fin
                Cells(i, j).Value = Cells(RowIndex, 1).Value
                RowIndex = RowIndex + 1
                j = j + 1
            Next
            i = i + 1
            j = 1
        Loop
    End If

    'Format into QIF and output to a text file
    LastCellRow = RealLastCell(Sheets("Sheet1")).Row
    Open "c:test.txt" For Output As #1

I'm still on Quicken98[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#7)
by Anonymous User on Tue Jan 18, 2005 at 10:11:08 AM PDT

I was still using Q98 when I saw the handwriting on the wall with their mandatory "upgrades" to QuickBooks. I figured out the structure of the quicken.ini file and saved off the [Registration] section. When I was forced a few months ago to re-install my entire OS from the ground up, the Q98 install CD worked fine. I then stuffed the registration information into quicken.ini with TextPad and the program hasn't given me a headache since. It does everything I need, since I don't care about "auto-download" of account data, and Intuit can take a flying leap into boiling lava for all I'm concerned. Their support was lousy back when I got started with their software and it hasn't, by all accounts, improved since.

Where to find old Quickens[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#8)
by mtbandit on Tue Jan 18, 2005 at 10:20:21 AM PDT

I'm a Q2002 user and got that notice.  Yeah, I was not happy.  Then I asked myself a couple of questions:
1. Where might I find a copy of Q2004? Most of my financial institutions use QIF files and I'm too lazy to manually enter the information, so I refuse to use Q2005.
2.  I wonder what other programs I could use instead of Quicken... programs that are less restrictive.

To be honest, I don't even need a quarter of the features in Quicken.  I track bank accounts, loans, and credit cards.  Things that the original Quicken did just fine.  So if there's a freeware or shareware program that can do just that (and support the open standard QIF format), then I'd be happy.

But really, since nearly every institution provides QIF downloads, I can live on 2002 without the online access anyway.  Since all I would need to do is download the information manually.  It's a damn nusiance, but I can do it.  I do that with half the accounts I'm managing anyway.

So for the forseeable future, I'll be hanging with Q2002 and showing Intuit the proverbial finger.

Getting Q2004[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#15)
by Anonymous User on Tue Jan 18, 2005 at 12:29:56 PM PDT

Try ebay for Q2004. I had been using Quicken Deluxe 1998 for years, but I couldn't import banking data (a capability I was starting to want).

So, when I saw the earlier article about removal of QIF file import in 2005, I figured I'd best get a copy of 2004. I quick trip to ebay and a "buy now" button, yielded a Quicken 2004 Deluxe CD for ~$15 (incl shipping).

That's another $15 off my $2000 Paypal limit before they insist on confirming my bank account information.

Finding Qucken 2004[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#27)
by ekuns on Tue Jan 18, 2005 at 04:40:44 PM PDT

I had exactly the thought you did.  I found out that CompUSA is able to order Quicken 2004, but first I went to a computer show and found it there.  (Some vendors at computer shows have the older software on hand.)

I have been happy with Quicken 2002 running under Crossover Office under Linux, but there were a few problems I was having tracking a 401k with Quicken 2002.  Once I heard about Intuit removing QIF import from Quicken 2005, I decided that I would buy Quicken 2004 and would never upgrade from there.  That is still my plan.

I am happy with Quicken 2004.  It did indeed fix the problems I was having with 401k tracking with Quicken 2002, and it added some very very nice other features of use to that sort of account.  (If not for the 401k, I would have had no need to upgrade from 2002, because my only "online" Quicken use is related to the 401k.)

I will never upgrade Quicken again.  Whenever they sunset 2004, I will be forced to find another product to handle my finances.  Nothing I have tried is as easy for me to use as Quicken.  I haven't tried anything else in a couple years however.

I fully expect Intuit to sunset Quicken 2004 as soon as they think they can -- and sooner if possible.  It sounds (from their sunset policy page) like they intend to support the current version and the two previous versions.  That means Quicken 2004 will be sunsetted the moment that Quicken 2007 comes out.

I either haven't run into or haven't noticed the advertising others mention about 2004 or earlier.  I like the user interface of 2004 more than the user interface of 2002, but YMMV.

Same boat[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#34)

Found a copy on amazon(side vendor) for $11 with $3.99 shipping.  Will have to see if I can get an old rebate form and get $10 back for my upgrade.

Check the quicken site on 2004 and it does stop offering online services come 2007.  Personnally I would of been far more happy if I could of sent quicken a $10 check for next year to just download the data, no new updates needed.

Before doing this I looked in getting money 2005. However in reading reviews for money 2005 and quicken 2005 both seem to be filled with bugs and are filled with ads selling you stuff(2004 has some of it). Also no-one really recommended that you upgrade from 2004 to 2005 since they offered no real product upgrade.

So instead I will pay my $15 for the next 2 years of support and wait until 2007 and see what is available then.
