Real Rhapsody = Real Rip Off

Real Rhapsody's "Free Trial" scam is a shameless rip off. First of all, you can't just click a link and fill out a form to cancel the free trial. No, you have to call during business hours to cancel.
I've been on hold for over two hours waiting to cancel. Fortunately I work from home so I have all the time in the world to waste waiting for these nitwits to answer but I can't imagine someone in an office having the time to wait over two hours for someone to pick up the phone. So if you want to cancel... well, essentially you can't cancel!
Finally, while waiting for some pinhead to answer the phone, I surfed around to not only find out that EVERYBODY has had this problem but also that a number of people have cancelled only to find out their credit card continues to get charged.
Don't risk it. Real Networks does bad business.

RealNetworks is up there in Microsoft land, and the arrogance probably rubs off. Also, it sounds like Customer Service is overwhelmed and underorganized, because no company wants the bad word-of-mouth that results from never picking up the phone.

I have never come across such a scam as this music scam called Rhapsody. Most companies want to work with you, try to treat you fair and give half way good customer service, this company however ripped me off for $40 on a "free trial" (go figure) and then not only deleted the music I bought when I cancelled but also the free downloads and for the topper on the cake they took the complimentry music that was on my mp3 player when I bought it from best buy. So for a lovely $40, I can listen to a astonishing 5 songs total(apparently the songs must have quadrupled in price) WORD OF MOUTH MY FRIENDS- DONT USE RHAPSODY!!!

I had a similar experience with Rhapsody, and could not get through to cancel. HOWEVER, I didn't sweat it, because I knew they would drop me real fast if my credit card didn't accept the next monthly charge.

I don't know about the other major credit card companies, but Novus (Discover Card) allows you to request "disposable charge numbers", up to 10 at a time. They are valid credit card numbers, linked to your regular charge account, but can only be used once. I use these for many online transactions or software activations.

Burned once, shame on them. Burned twice, shame on me.

I totally agree and have been taking advantage of my CITI disposable card numbers for 'free' trial offers with Wal*Mart and Blockbuster DVDs-by-mail, as well as the Napster 2-week trial. It's thoroughly liberating to know that even if they wanted to, they won't be able to continue charging my card if I don't want them to. In addition, with CITI, I can actually 'close' and 'reopen' cards if I decide I want to close them out early or keep the service for a while longer.

For the person who said they were just overwhelmed, when I cancelled they kept asking me again and again why I was cancelling. I WAS just going to stop it for a month while I was not connected, but when I discovered that I would have to CALL to cancel and then they hounded me with questions why I was cancelling, I was ready to tell them to go #$#$#R$ and now I am NOT going back.

Make sure you call this number: 1-866-563-6157 I used the number supplied inside the program and was on hold for an hour before I gave up (despite them saying it would take 5 minutes. Calling this number got me in almost immediately. The lady sounded almost Indian, but can't tell for sure. She only asked why I was cancelling (I said I didn't use it anymore), and went on to say I would get an e-mail confirming the cancellation. For the person I got, it went fairly smooth and quick, luckily.

I just wanted to thank the poster who gave a different phone number to call. I tried to cancel my service last week using the number given in the program, only to be kept on hold and eventually hanging up. I called the number the poster gave about 15 mins ago, and I got someone within 2 minutes. For the record, I was lucky I guess to not be hassled, I just stated that I was too busy to use Rhapsody and hardly use my computer, which was a lie, but I didn't want to be bugged about cancelling. So if anyone else needs to cancel, I suggest using that number.

I just wanted to say thank you for the number. i have been with rhapsody for over a year now... before they upgraded... everything was working fine with the old rhapsody... but now i have all kinds of problems... buying song but they dont download... or loosing music that i have purchased.... the latest... trying to purchase a song and now it tells me i cant i have 3 computers that are arthurized please dearuthrize one of you computers.... now the funny thing is i dont have 3 computers and i only work on one thats the one from home i work from never used another computer... so i tried to look up a number to call them about this but to my surprise no number... i had to google to try to find a number on rhapsody and came across you... thanks i will give a call first thing in the morning wish me luck... tijhea.

I managed to cancel my subscription to Rhapsody. It was reasonably quick to do so once I found the number on the website, but the number was buried very deep. I fully believe this practice is unethical and there probably should be legislation to prevent the consumer from this. If Real have the means to make it as easy as it was to subscribe, then it should be just as easy if not easier to unsubscribe. When the call center person started telling me why it is the perfect time to upgrade because a new version is available ..blah blah blah. I became very firm with her. She told me the only reason why they make you call a number is to gather information about why you want to end the subscription. I'm disapointed with Real and have decided to make WMP my default media player again.

Change your Country of Billing address to any non-US and non-CANADA (like --- China) And save it. Then u can cancel it online without calling anyone. this works for realone Super pass but not sure about Rhapsody as they are not offering Rhapsody to Non-USA users. Good luck!

I didn't need rhapsody any more so I tried to cancel. When I got the Phone number from their site it was a fake one. I found the real one when I yahoo it and found this site that told me the real number which is 1-866-563-6157. I called the place and this guy had a really strong Indian accent( i think the company has a place in India and pay the people low wages). so i called the number and the guy ask me why and i told him I just didn't want it. He told me to wait and I waited for three minutes and he kept asking me why I was canceling( dammit I just want to cancel). So he finally give up and cancel my account.

In June 07, Real Rhapsody increased their monthly subscription by $3.00. They never notified me of this increase, and if I hadn't checked my credit card invoice I would have never known? Needless to say, I cancelled. I too used the number found on a their web page and got through in just two minutes. She sounded Indian but I could understand most of what she said. Get this; when I told her I wanted to cancel because of the mo. increase from $9.95 to $12.95 she said I could pay quarterly $29.85. Right, that's $9.95/mo. What a devious company Real is. They should call themselves Real Devious. Anyway, you do need to keep repeating you want to cancel NOW, otherwise you'll get a spiel about sending you an email that alledgedly you can respond to. Also, make sure you get a cancellation number.

I used an old savings account to sign up for rhapsody. I canceled and got all the same hassles with the indian csr as everyone else here. I thought all was taken care of when I got the confirmation.

That account was just used for savings there after and I had opened another in the city i was attending college, so i didnt regularly check the balance. Statements came to mom mother back home and she didnt notice anything odd because the charges were so low.

About a year and a 1/2 later that account starts to over draft charging HUGE fees. When i get to the bottom of it Rhapsody claims that I created TWO accounts on the same day with the same billing info, one with a typo email address--so i must not have been aware of the duplicate. They claim I canceled one but not the other!!!

WHAT! Who would make two accounts of the same thing? Typo or not I DID NOT ENTER MY BILLING INFO TWICE!!! I think they are getting more creative with the way they scam people to justify their continued billing. I filled complaints but I think I'd have to take them to court to get my almost $200 back.

Whats worse is I was calling and trying to resolve all of this right after having given birth...how stressful is that. CSR were very rude and didn't seem to acknowledge anything I told them. Finally they stopped responding.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY, THEY HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO INTEGRITY AND WILL DO EVERY SHADY THING THEY CAN TO HASSLE YOU AND KEEP YOUR MONEY.

There are plenty of better alternatives to music downloading. Good luck to everyone.
