Intuit Pits Its Customers Against Its Partners

By Ed Foster, Section Columns
Posted on Fri Sep 17, 2004 at 08:27:51 AM PDT

In a way, you have to give Intuit credit. Who else could figure out how to "sunset" both their customers and their financial institution partners at the same time?

Intuit's decision to disable its older technology for importing most types of bank account information in Quicken 2005 for Windows is causing quite a stir. "I remembered reading your story about Intuit no longer supporting on-line banking with older versions of Quicken, so I thought I should bite the bullet this year and upgrade to Quicken 2005 when it came out," a reader wrote. "So guess what -- with the new Quicken I can no longer download checking account info from my bank, something I could do perfectly well with Quicken 2002."

The reader's bank informed her it had refused to pay Intuit's fees for implementing the OFX (Open Financial Exchange) download technology that is now mandatory for most online banking in Quicken 2005. "If I want to access my accounts, I have to revert to an older version of Quicken that still uses the .QIF file format," the reader wrote. "It's either that or type my data in by hand. Otherwise, my bank would have to charge an astronomical monthly fee to make up for extortion payments they'd be making to Intuit. What incredible greed!"

You can read Intuit's explanation for all this in detail on its QIF FAQ page. Among the things they point out is that the .QIF format is aging technology, that Quicken has supported the OFX standard for a number of years, that Quicken 2004 displayed warnings that Intuit was going to do this in the next version, and that Quicken 2005 customers have 60 days to return the product if they don't like it. In other words, Intuit is saying that sooner or later they were going to have to cut off use of the .QIF format, so why not just have a clean break now?

OK, but readers found some other things on Intuit's FAQ page that were disturbing. "If you upgrade to the new version of Quicken and your financial institution doesn't, they suggest you 'call or write to your Financial Institution to let them know you would like to download into Quicken via OFX...' or that you should '...consider moving to a Financial Institution that supports direct download via OFX,'" wrote another reader. "While I admit that .QIF format is not very user friendly and OFX will bring benefits, Quicken management has clearly taken the Microsoft approach of modifying an essential element of the underlying format on a new version and NOT providing any overlap -- to assure that you must get in lock-step with them. It would cost them essentially nothing in code to keep .QIF available. Instead, they are creating this 'crisis' to force sales both in their new products for people whose financial institutions do change and to force a crisis on the financial institutions by double-barreling the attack to get them to migrate to OFX."

Actually, it would cost Intuit nothing at all code-wise to keep supporting .QIF, because the code is still there. Intuit is only blocking .QIF imports for checking, savings, 401(k), and brokerage accounts in Quicken 2005 for Windows, and export of .QIF data is still allowed. Asset, liability, cash and other types of accounts can still use .QIF imports because OFX apparently doesn't handle them. Credit card account data will not be imported via .QIF in Quicken 2006 for Windows, but it's OK now. And, interestingly enough, Quicken 2005 for the Mac can still use .QIF for all types of accounts, and as of yet Intuit has no announced plans to change that. So while some users must leave this old technology behind right now, Intuit thinks it's perfectly fine for others.

A clear illustration of how Intuit is playing its Quicken customers off against its financial partners is provided on the company's QIF information page for financial institutions. It shows a screenshot of the warning message that is displayed to Quicken 2004 users during .QIF import sessions if their financial institution has not signed up to use OFX. QIF Imports will no longer be available in the next release of Quicken, the message pronounces ominously, because it "appears that this Financial Institution does not support the better method of direct download." A link is then provided for the user to go find a bank that does support Intuit's chosen method.

Of course, the warning screenshot in Quicken 2004 doesn't mention the possibility of the user's bank charging a hefty monthly fee for this spiffy service, and neither does the warning that Quicken 2005 displays about .QIF credit card data imports not working in the next release. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the current consternation over .QIF imports is but a taste of what we'll be hearing from credit card companies and their customers next year. We'll see how much credit Intuit gets then.

Intuit's user hostility[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#1)
by Anonymous User on Fri Sep 17, 2004 at 08:53:34 AM PDT

I first started using Quicken for DOS in 1990. It was by far the best PC program I'd ever seen, a total joy to use. Sadly, I had to move on because Quicken for DOS had no concept of a 21st century. To their credit, Intuit provided Quicken 98 at no cost, but compared with the older DOS version, Quicken 98 is afflicted with a thousand major and minor irritations that seem to be the result of sloppy, inept, careless, or just plain unimaginative programming. Add to that the user-hostility that the Intuit business machine has developed over the last several years, and here's an outfit I passionately want to get away from. I have not upgraded from Quicken 98 because I have no use for the bells and whistles of later versions, and no confidence that 98's irritations will have been dealt with. All this is enough to push me towards setting up a Linux box and getting to grips with GnuCash.

Personal Financial Data Download Formats[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#2)
by Anonymous User on Fri Sep 17, 2004 at 09:11:30 AM PDT

I once used Parson's Technology's "Money Counts" which was character based (maybe even DOS-based) but since Intuit bought and killed that I've been using spreadsheet products -- currently Excel. I've tried several versions of both Money and Quicken but never fallen in love with either one. I wish [more] financial instutions would offer their downloadable data in Excel or better still in CSV (Comma Separated Values) format. Maybe that should be their response to new formats and licensing fees from Intuit (and Microsoft?) -- continue to offer the old formats but add CSV and let their customers send pressure back up the line to the software vendors to accept CSV imports for their software. I've been a Quicken user since the early 90s and it does seem that increasingly more development effort is spent by Intuit building an inescapable wall around it's products and locking users into a yearly upgrade scheme. I wonder Ed, have you or others on this list taken a look at MS Money to see how it compares with the current state of affairs with Quicken? Heaven forbid that it's worse! Are there fully functional alternatives to run under Windows other than Quicken & Money? (Preferably something better than the spreadsheet from hell that I used prior to Quicken).

Who is a good competitor to Quicken?[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#5)

I'm locked into Quickbooks online, my wife uses quicken for the mac. I think both of us would gladly switch to a non-MS competitor, if a high quality competitor exists. Can anyone recommend one?

That's the problem, why Intuit can get away with how they treat their loyal customer base. Personally, I'm scaling back the overall financial "monitoring" that I do. I'm reminded of the old computer/software axiom: "Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should ..." The package I'm testing these days is MoneyDance, a Java application that runs on practically ALL operating systems. From Windows and Linux, and all the way to OS/2 Warp. As long as there's a current JVM MoneyDance will run. Be prepared though, if it's the same features that Quicken offers you are looking for don't waste the bandwidth. And stick with the devil you know. When you are tired of getting poked, you'll do what I did and do an honest evaluation of just what you really need in a financial management application. Gregory L. Alternative to Quickbooks[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#7)
by Anonymous User on Fri Sep 17, 2004 at 10:03:59 AM PDT

I recently started a small business and needed an accounting package. Being a loyal reader of this column I knew it would not be Quickbooks. I went with Peachtree. My CPA was a quickbooks certified expert and tried to get me to change my mind. When I didn't he bought a copy of Peachtree so he could support me. Now he is becoming a Peachtree expert and recommending it to all his customers. Besides a more friendly company backing the program he tells me Peachtree is more inline with true accounting proceedures.

I started using Peachtree when I was treasurer for a non-profit group many years back. We were a 100% volunteer organization, so had no need for all the payroll part of it, and consequently I've upgraded only once in 10 years. Granted, I don't do any online banking with it, and most banks I've seen don't support Peachtree, anyway. But for a standalone system, I think there's none better. Incidentally, I originally got it because I thought the standard reports from Quickbooks looked like a programming student's early exercises, but given all the corporate nonsense that's gone on since I'm even happier with the choice by made. I still use Peachtree for my personal finances, too (it was my copy, not the organization's -- they've since bought a copy for the new treasurer).

I use Moneydance (http://www.moneydance.com/) on the Mac. Have for 3 or 4 years now. It's java based, actually looks like a mac app in most respects, and works well. It's online banking is OK -- not as many banks as Quicken, my bank doesn't work with it, but it supports OFX and QIF imports. Support is great via mailing list or e-mail to the company.

Intuit problems[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#4)
by Red Rat on Fri Sep 17, 2004 at 09:43:24 AM PDT

Years ago I started using online banking with Washington Mutual. Unfortunately, they would allow you to download your past checking history in only two fomats (Microsoft Money and Intuit Quicken). I pointed out to them that you needed to use one of these software packages in order to your banking with them. I suggested that since a large portion of their online banking customers more than likely had Microsoft Office or MS Excel, why not allow downloads in either Excel format or "cvs" since most programs can handle that format since it is in simple plain text. Recently, not that I credit myself with this addtion, Washington Mutual added ".csv" format to the checking download. I am sure that others complained about this too. Using CSV, I get check number, date it was cashed/processed, and the amount. Furthermore, WAMU also downloads all my activities on that account including electronic banking of all payments. What more do I need, unless I am a mega-corporation.

Intuit and Banking Downloads[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#9)

Two comments. First, Intuit wants me to upgrade to 2005. I can now download in 2002 but not 2005. Where is my incentive to upgrade? Second, Intuit states on their FAQ webpage that, "Open Financial Exchange (OFX), is the industry standard for consumer and small business online banking, bill payment, bill presentment, investment transaction download and 401(k) account access." Is it really the standard? Whose standard?

Intuit/Money[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#11)
by Anonymous User on Fri Sep 17, 2004 at 03:34:07 PM PDT

I broke down and started using Quicken 2002 several years ago because I wanted the computer to print checks instead of handwriting them. Quicken taught me painful lessons about keeping multiple backups, and I fell in love with its download of transactions and instant reconciliation. About a year ago, Quicken quit downloading. I called the credit union and finally got to someone who knew what was going on. He explained that Intuit was charging them $10,000 a year for the interface and they only had 3 people using it. He suggested that I try Microsoft Money. I did, and I hate it. Quicken was annoying with all the little things that it wanted to do, but Money is absolutely stupid whit all the crazy things it wants to do. The condescending voice "guidance" has convinced me to keep my speakers on mute anytime I run money. It does not do the transaction download correctly, and I stopped using it because it kept screwing up my account. I really wish there was an alternative...

OFX is closed?[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#12)
by Anonymous User on Fri Sep 17, 2004 at 04:06:04 PM PDT

I find it ironic that "Open Financial Exchange" is a closed/proprietary format.  Very open, isn't it?

I gave up on Quicken years ago, and switched to Excel with custom macros.  I wanted an open system where I could add macros for custom automation.  Instead, Quicken is a closed product, that increasingly tied you to Intuit's services. It was more work than it was worth.

OFX is Open[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#45)
by Anonymous User on Fri Jan 14, 2005 at 08:45:17 PM PDT

OFX is an open standard with no licensing fees. It's simply a bunch of carefully defined XML tags. You can get all the documentation on the various versions at www.ofx.net. OFX isn't the problem. It's Intuit's partial truths about its use of OFX. Quicken will not import an OFX file. It only imports QFX files -- Intuit's proprietary variation. If you take a look inside a QFX file you will find that the majority of the XML tags in it are standard OFX. But there are at least a couple of tags that aren't standard. You can actually download an OFX (Money) file from your financial institution, copy the appropriate tags out of a QFX file from the same financial institutions into the OFX file, rename the file to .QFX and Quicken will happily digest it. But if you just try to rename an OFX file to QFX, Quicken will gag on it without those tags.

Everbank.com installed a new internet access program and fell into Intuit's trap. Whereas a use could previously download a new bill pay item using QIF, everbank's new program does not allow this use of QIF and does not offer any substitute way to accomplish immediate bill pay download. Instead users must wait two days for the item to be processed, then download it but without the Quicken expense category. Also the download is flawed in that the payee name appears in the memo field in Quicken, So will they pay up to Intuit or resist and reinstate QIF (or do nothing, in which case I'm gone)

Intuit always finds a way to abuse its customers[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#16)
by Anonymous User on Sun Sep 19, 2004 at 08:45:33 AM PDT

Intuit has managed to sell endless "new versions" of its programs without ever really fixing their obvious flaws. They constantly alter the input screens and modify the data files so that you can't go back when you realize that you are coping with a new look with no improved function. Their cynical instance that you must pay them for updated tax tables every year should have been sufficient warning to all of us to flee to any competitive product we could find.

All of the above rants about Intuit are so right on the money (so to speak). An interesting side note for Mac users is that the Quicken product for the Mac is not the same as the one for Windows. The Mac version is seemingly written separately, by a different team, and has many fewer features, along with a ton of bugs. I used Quicken for years in DOS/Windows. I recently switched to the Mac world and a copy of Quicken 2004 for the Mac came with my iBook. What a piece of junk! I was never happy with Intuit when I was a Windows user, but I stayed with it. Unfortunately, the Mac world doesn't even offer Microsoft Money as a competitor. The best post is the one with advice on running GnuCash under X11. I've had some experieince with Linux, and I'm going to try that. Perhaps Apple can throw a couple of programmers their way and get it to run natively under OS X? Are you listening, Apple? The other good piece of advice is to perhaps scale down my needs and make do without Quicken. Do we really need to have a computer intervene in every part of our lives? Thanks for a good topic, Ed.

You can run GnuCash on OS/X right now, you don't need to wait for a port. See this page.

Quicken[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#18)

I have been a long time Quicken user who has also become increasingly irritated over the product. Most everyone has already pointed out the obvious. Below, are some additional irritating observations. Recently I bought a new computer that unfortunately came with a "new" user version of Quicken. Just for the hell of it, I tried to import my data, as expected - I could not import my existing quicken data. When I BUY a program, I don't want the screen/menu items cluttered with "ads" that direct you to the company's website to buy their products.

Why I'm still on Quicken98[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#19)

Does the basics, does what I need, and doesn't get in my way. I quit thinking about Intuit as a company to do business when I heard about the QuickBooks Update debacle. I've got the activation for the .ini file in my PDA and an in case of a complete disaster. What do I need the company for? Support? Customer Friendliness? [cue disbelieving laughter]

Intuit has begun to suck more and more...[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#20)
by Anonymous User on Mon Sep 20, 2004 at 11:56:11 AM PDT

... I've been using Quicken for over a decade, but Intuit has always tried to build revenue from "plus-up" ongoing sales and the new strategy is no different.  If Quicken Billpay's behavior was not so appalling I might even put up with this.

In Intuit's defense we must note that they are now in direct competition with these financial institutions, many of whom are now providing equivalent bill-paying services as part of customer accounts and depriving Intuit of revenue -- it's a pity that Intuit couldn't figure out a way to add value instead of consumer robbery.

I've already entered negative reviews of Quicken 2004 on ZDnet and CNet and will be writing a strongly-worded letter to Intuit's management in one of the following cases:  (1) They fix my problems with Billpay before next month or (2) I write them off in favor of any major bank.

Can anyone here claim that Microsoft Money is in any important way superior to Quicken?  How about any other competing product?  Open-source account trackers are good but they're still feature-light and service-zero.

The PDA connection[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#21)
by jimdoria on Tue Sep 21, 2004 at 10:09:21 AM PDT

I recently re-installed Quicken 98 to use with Pocket Quicken. I wanted a PDA program that would synchronize my financial data (the whole point of having a PDA.) Only Pocket Quicken and Pocket Money offered this, and by all accounts Pocket Money was a nest of bugs. The other choices required a multi-step export/import process every time I wanted to transfer data to the desktop. So much for convenience.

Only then did I find out about them "breaking" the online transaction download feature. You know what? I'll do without it. I can still track my finances, synch with my PDA & import QIF files. This is all I really need. I never cared much for the way the program handled automated transaction downloads anyway.

I've heard users griping about Intuit for years. I remember reading a column five years ago or more (it might have even been Ed's old column in InfoWorld) about how abusive they were to their customers. But the company's still going strong. How can that be? The psychological term is "accommodation". Receive enough negative stimulus for long enough, and you'll tend to ignore it. Software customers have grown to accept this kind of tyranny as the cost of doing business, from Microsoft, Intuit, and countless lesser imitators. Plus the fact that for the average user (the one not "sophisticated" enough to find this website) the program you choose to do a job is the one that came with your computer or the one that the sales guy at the computer store directs you to (because it's what "everybody else" uses.) In other words, there's no real choice involved.

The real solution would be for banks to get together and come up with their own industry-standard data interchange format for customer use. But we'll all grow old and gray waiting for banks to innovate anything.

interchange format is standard, but...[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#26)

The interchange data format has already been standardized -- that's OFX. The prime movers being Checkfree, Intuit, and Microsoft (the latter two owning minority stakes in Checkfree...). You can download the data specfication from ofx.net.

The problem is the interface on both sides (bank and consumer) of the data exchange. The banks dug their own hole on this one in that they outsourced the interface construction on the prior version to Intuit and now Intuit is squeezing hard to bleed the banks for the new version for OFX. It wouldn't surprise me if the banks' licensing agreement with Intuit gave away the right to independently develop their own interface while they are still using Intuit's.

Curiously, my credit union, which uses the same third party developer for all its online services, has OFX data file downloads for the credit card accounts, but not checking/savings.

Why'd I Use Quicken In The First Place?[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#22)
by Anonymous User on Tue Sep 21, 2004 at 11:17:35 AM PDT

Because Quicken supported the download data formats that my financial instituions were using, I picked Quicken. Quicken 2005 won't support many of those formats. So the logical thing for me to do is to buy Quicken 2005 and demand that my financial institutions implement acceptable data formats for use by Quicken? By the way, what am I supposed to use instead of Quicken 2005 until all the financial institutions comply? What I need is an alternative to Quicken 2005 and the Intuit created problem is no longer my problem. Seems logical to me. Why didn't Intuit think this through?

Hot off the presses -- PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Microsoft Corp. may make more large acquisitions than it has done historically and become a more distributed company as opposed to moving key employees to its Redmond, Washington, headquarters, Chief Financial Officer John Connors said Monday. Here a nightmare scenario for you. Microsoft buys Intuit and meshes Money, Quicken, and Turbo-Tax. Then charges you a couple of hundred a year to get new tax tables, less standardization in formats, and more bugs! At least Quicken works more often than not. Of course I have not yet run into a file download format problem with my own files.

Microsoft already tried to acquire Intuit a few years ago or maybe Intuit tried to get bought. Not sure what happened, But maybe the DOJ denided it? Anyway why would they want to but them now, all MS has to do is wait until Inuit buries itself and losses value in stock and then tkes them over.

Microsoft saw something & tried to buy Intuit back in 1994.  This was killed by the DoJ in late-'94 or early-'95.

Where has the old Intuit gone -- wrong![ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#38)
by Anonymous User on Thu Sep 30, 2004 at 03:24:20 PM PDT

Intuit had their act pretty much together and was pretty customer oriented (a direction promoted by founder Scott Cook) until their new CEO showed up about in January 2000. A GE-whiz manager, Steve Bennett was going to make Intuit a $5B company in 5 years (last time I checked they were about a 1.8B company). What happened basically is that he rolled out nearly all the existing VPs within about a year and brought in his own people. To reach his $5B goal they were all focused on profit -- thus the many things they've done to Quicken and Turbotax to make them products that lock you in and drive Intuit's profit up. They just weren't satisifed (why not?) with owning 70%+ of the two markets, they wanted more $$$. They botched the once well thought of quicken.com website (it now sends you to Yahoo finance). During the last three years they tried to institute six sigma and from an insider's point of view, it's been neither pretty nor successful. Employee evaluations dropped dramatically in multiple departments including IT (where during one point they had 5 different CIOs over a 16 month period, the two externally hired candidates lasting about 3 months and 6 months respectively before being fired!). Employee moral is down, customers are pissed, and the stock is going nowhere. But Steve is doing fine, the finance web site shows his pay at $22M (http://finance.yahoo.com/q/pr?s=INTU) even through the stock price has been relatively flat the past 4 years.
