Dealing With Symantec

By Ed Foster, Section The Gripelog
Posted on Tue Aug 17, 2004 at 12:49:02 AM PDT

Rebates, copy protection, support ... the subjects vary considerably, but the stream of gripes about Symantec just keep coming. The one common thread seems to be that, when dealing with Symantec, it's hard to be sure just what deal you have.

One reader wasn't sure whether he was more upset about an extra charge Symantec added to his Live Update subscription for Norton AntiVirus or his inability to get an explanation from the company. "I renewed my subscription for Norton Antivirus updates last night for $19.95," the reader wrote. "Today, on reviewing my order, I found that a special fee of $10 had been added, a fee I never noticed in ordering the renewal." With some difficulty, he figured out how to e-mail Symantec about the problem and finally got a response. "It looks like it came from an actual service rep, but that the rep's responsibility is so narrowly defined that all she can do with a dissatisfied customer is instruct him to jump through another set of hoops to reach another low-level service drone. It isn't worth any more of my time, so I told them to cancel my order."

Readers keep finding news ways in which Symantec's product activation can bite them. "First they cheat the company of paid-for service if you have to reformat for any reason," wrote another reader. "I had prepaid for two years of updates by mistake, and asked for a refund, which they refused to give me. Two re-formattings later, I lost most of that second year's worth of subscription. I was told I could not recover the lost time already paid for."

And Symantec continues to lead the pack when it comes to gripes about deadbeat rebates. But their fulfillment center's excuses sometimes have their amusing side, as shown by a gripe I just received. "This is all triggered by a recent postcard I received from what must be Symantec's current fulfillment center," wrote one reader. "At Best Buy I had purchased and received authentic receipt duplicates and instructions for submitting my rebate request for Norton Antivirus Professional 2004. The postcard I received claims I did not include the requested information and gives a bogus 800 number for the rebate center. It also states that: '...we could not honor your request due to the following reason(s) : "Norton AntiVirus Pro (NAV Pro) - MissingPurchase Date, Invalid receipt required.' Please note the corrupted syntax in the latter item/reason -- does it mean they require an invalid receipt?"

Well, maybe. With Symantec, you just don't know for sure what the deal is. Speaking of which, in case you missed it, those of you looking for a different deal should check out the final results of what readers had to say when I polled them on which antivirus products they think are the best alternatives to McAfee and Symantec.

symantec solution[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#1)
by Howling on Tue Aug 17, 2004 at 09:57:27 AM PDT

I have come with a simple solution to symantec - replace it. Yesterday I was at a client's site and found three machine prompting to renew Norton Antivirus. Uninstalled and bought AVG online for all three, installed and ran the scan. AVG found virus's on two of the three machine that Norton had missed.

an old saw, but not really correct[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#2)
by Anonymous User on Tue Aug 17, 2004 at 11:35:22 AM PDT

I know the line about "I installed AV product X and it found viruses product Y had missed" is a classic, but it's not really a good reason to pick one over the other or justify a switch. Different programs will always detect viruses differently, and their displays of viruses found aren't always reliable. (Was it really a virus, or just a file already disinfected by the previous program? The end user can't tell.) You can't compare on small numbers alone. Besides, if you do play the numbers game, Grisoft's AVG does worse in a lot of professional AV testing than Norton. I like AVG, and I use it, but it's not necessarily better than Norton just because it says it found traces of a couple more viruses. It's better for a hole host of other reasons. And add my voice to those who've had problems with Norton. I gave up on them after having rebate and subscription date problems. Then over the last few months 4 of my friends and relatives have come to me for help with Norton 2004 installs gone awry. That program AND the company took a nose dive in reliability.

I also like the specious logic people often use in support whatever AV they've chosen:

Them: Get So-And-So AV.  It's great.

Me: Oh, yeah?  I've never heard of it.

Them: I've had it for months and I've had no problems.

Me: Hmmm.  I've been wearing this new cologne for the last few months and I haven't been attacked by any bears so it must be an effective bear repellent.

Symantec work around[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#3)
by Anonymous User on Tue Aug 17, 2004 at 01:01:07 PM PDT

One of the techs slipped and told me one time that the time on when your subscription to Symantec is kept is on you computer, not at Symantec. When I could not renew my subscription he told me to delete the Symantec Virus Program then delete the Symantec Common Folder in the programs folder. Re install Symantec and it will give you another full year of virus protection. Their computer checks the install date on your computer and will give you all the latest updtes.

And then we wonder why companies feel the need to protect themselves. The "work around" you describe is unethical and unfair. All system administrators with more than a dozen machines know this one, but also know how to do it right. It's because of people like you that we even have these discussions. Perhaps if the home users, who outnumber the corporate users, sincerely tried to work with their software vendors they could get better results and the companies would not have to do some of the things they do to stay in business. Remember, they are protecting themselves from us as much as we are protecting ourselves from them. I don't understand the pervasive mentality that all these companies are bad and out to get you. Very few are. Most are just trying to make a living - just like everyone else. I'll bet that you "trust" the guy who works on your car, and you're at least as likely to get ripped off there as from a utility vendor.

I have used "Norton" products since Dos 3.3. It Their products have gotten so BAD in the past few years with constant reinstalls etc. that I am now actively looking for replacements for all their products. If Symantec was easy to reach for problems with activation, It would be ok as I can ALWAYS take my mechanic to small claims court if we disagree but you can NOT reach any manager level person at Symantec EVER!!! Meandering thru their website is like wandering the forests in "Lord of the Rings". I have purchased MANY Norton products and Peter Norton must be sick to his stomach to see what Symantec has done with his software. UGH!!

Symantec Only Have Themselves to Blame[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#14)
by Anonymous User on Sat Aug 21, 2004 at 10:02:29 PM PDT

Why blame the poster? He had a legitimate reason to use this workaround, and was instructed to do so by a Symantec rep. In posting it here he might aid others having the same problem, who are suffering due to Symantec's poor consumer relations. It's up to the people who read his post as to whether or not to use it appropriately.

And lets not get to preachy about business users vs. home users. A lot of companies fudge on licensing, and they have little excuse. If you're using software at your place of work, in order to help your productivity etc (in other words, you're using it to MAKE A PROFIT), you should damn well be paying for it. Even if the percentages are uneven, unlicensed software in a business setting is a FAR greater problem.

Why blame the poster? He had a legitimate reason to use this workaround, and was instructed to do so by a Symantec rep. In posting it here he might aid others having the same problem, >>> Well, it doesn't work. Or, it didn't work for me. I purchased a NAV 2004 upgrade/renewal that has a license for two computers. It installed fine on my primary computer, but when I installed it on the second, the renewal date did not change. I tried everything, unistalling, manually uninstalling, deleting folders, changing the registry.....nothing worked and my supposed second license is worthless. Symantec said they will contact me in 24 hours, after I finally figured out how to sent them an email....

Problems with Norton[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#4)
by auctionhugh on Tue Aug 17, 2004 at 01:21:17 PM PDT

I use Norton for Exchange at our work servers, and Norton on my home pc's. I don't have any of the goofy problems I've had with McAfee, but that is just me.

The big problem we've had lately is getting hit with viruses that were not detected until the detections came out the next day, after it is already too late.

Symantec's in excuseable actions[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#7)
by Anonymous User on Tue Aug 17, 2004 at 02:52:18 PM PDT

Simple solution, you don't like what a company has done to you ... turn them over to your states Department of Consumer Affairs and watch the fur fly after that has hit the fan. My suggestion is to send them a copy of the message that goes to Consumer Affairs Department. In Florida that would be considered a fraud of the consumer. The fine that is given to a company that has done this is very severe high and stiff. No, you probably won't get anything for it but they would reconsider foing the same thing again. Also if you used a credit card you could get a hold of them and stop the payment to the company. Yes, it does take longer to get your money back, but they don't get to use your funds either.

Symantec Subscription[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#9)
by Anonymous User on Tue Aug 17, 2004 at 05:52:43 PM PDT

I was about to renew my NAV subscription when I read your article. This made me reluctant to give Symantec my credit card number and risk being overcharged. So after 5 minutes searching the Internet, I downloaded a file which extended my subscription to 1/5/2041. Thanks for the warning!

Circular logic[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#12)
by Anonymous User on Wed Aug 18, 2004 at 08:50:54 AM PDT

I ran into a problem with NAV Pro recently where if suddenly refused to scan my machine. The subscription still showed good for another eight months, so I followed all of the instructions to uninstall/reinstall/update NAV, but never could get it to scan my machine. I finally uninstalled it a final time (doing my best to also delete all folders/registry entries for NAV) and am experimenting with other programs.

I also didn't feel like spending $$ to talk to a live human, since I'm sure they would have followed a script about "please uninstall/reinstall" rather than actually troubleshooting the problem.

NAV rebates--good news[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#13)
by Anonymous User on Thu Aug 19, 2004 at 11:46:17 AM PDT

Just for balance, I have requested several Norton AntiVirus rebates in recent years and have received all of them-some actually fast. Not that this proves anything except that there may also be good news among the bad and vice versa. Their online support, though, is often mystifying.

Symantec rebates[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#16)
by Anonymous User on Tue Aug 24, 2004 at 11:24:41 AM PDT

When Symantec rebates work, they are REALLY fast, like under a month. However, when they are bad, they get rejected for bogus reasons, or just don't get entered at all. I recently had a problem with 2 rebates I sent in, they never showed up. So I contacted customer service and they gave me the fax #, and I faxed my submission, and it still did not show up. Then I asked if I could email the scans and they said yes, and it still did not show up. Finally I sent a nastygram to Symantec, and I got a phone call from Parago (the rebate processor) and apparently they finally got to processing my rebate. In fact, they apparently processed each of them twice :-). So now I figure I've been compensated for my pain and suffering.

Symantec rebates SUCK[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#20)
by Anonymous User on Fri Jul 07, 2006 at 04:55:07 PM PDT

I noticed bloggers aren't enthused about Symantec rebate programs - with GOOD reason. Ever since Symantec took over Norton they seem to play a nasty rebate game. Every single year since the takeover I have had rebates refused for "missing information" - a re-submission address is given on the rejection form. Upon sending a COPY of all the material in the original submission accompanied by a NASTY letter, the rebate is usually forthcoming. NOT THIS YEAR. I submitted a dual rebate request for a dual package (NSW and Firewall) with promised rebates on $30 and $40 (the latter for purchasing the package through Outlet.com). The second was rejected. After much email communication Symantec finally agreed that all the material necessary had been submitted and the claim was valid - then issued a $30 check (NOT $40) for the rebate. So far I have been unable to get these idiots to understand that they've miscast the rebate despite quoting chapter-and-verse on reference numbers. I finally wrote to Symantec CEO, but - NO RESPONSE. Apparently they now employ TOTAL IDIOTS at their rebate processing center and their management doesn't give a S*** about customers. When the current license period of Symantec products expires I'll be voting with my feet and I'll be bad-mounting Symantec at every opportunity.

Symantec return policy[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#17)
by Howling on Tue Aug 24, 2004 at 03:07:29 PM PDT

Symantec does have a 60 day return policy.  You have to look for it under customer server (don't load the assistant), non-techical issues, other issues.

Went to help a client that bought the Norton 2004 upgrade online.  She had problems with the download timing out multiple times.  Then after getting it installed it bogged down the machine by using nearly  100% of CPU.

I had to dig in symantec knowlege base to find their solution - live update is corrupt so uninstall and reinstall the entire problem.

I did uninstall Norton and delete the install kit.  Bought AVG online and used symantec LOD (letter of destruction) form to get my client's money back.

System is running much better now.

Problem with renewal[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#19)
by Anonymous User on Sun Sep 12, 2004 at 03:03:48 PM PDT

I have just (on 10th Sept) renewed my subscription for Symantec anti virus for £21. After a while I got an email which is supposed to give me my new subscription key, but... hey! where the subscription key is meant to be, it's just blank, empty space! So I visit the Symantec site which directs me to the Symantec "subscription troubleshooter".....

Ever spoken to a really dumb enquiries clerk? Like when you say "I have a problem with your product!" replies to you "Now, let me get this straight... You have told me you have a problem with our product. I understand from what you have told me so far that you have a problem with our product. Is that right?". Well, that's what the subscription troubleshooter is - it's just an *automated* dumb enquiries clerk!

Eventually I found a link to an email address support@symantec.com and filled in the details, including a copy of the complete receipt and the message that should have had a subscription key but doesn't, but 2 mins later the message bounces back!.. "The message reached the recipient's e-mail system, but delivery was refused."

Well, in the end they have not delivered what I paid for. And as it would take me much more than £21 worth of my time to recover my £21, I may as well write it off. This is what gives internet shopping a bad name.

I'll just go and buy AVG instead, which I have on my other machines and has always worked without a hitch.
