Reader Voices: Breaking Up Microsoft

A number of readers have commented on how the European Union’s antitrust action against Microsoft makes the Microsoft-DOJ settlement look all the lamer. One reader, though, was inspired to propose that not only should the Redmond software monolith be broken up but it should be broken up seven ways.

"I have been thinking about the three-prong Microsoft penalty recently handed down by the European Union anti-monopoly judge," the reader wrote. "The penalties were: a monetary fine, the requirement to sell a version of Windows XP without a bundled multimedia and the requirement to disclose OS code to server application developers. I think EU's ruling is a good thing but with Microsoft's army of lawyers, firing off a fusillade of appeals, I doubt it will have much effect. Justice delayed is justice denied.

"Having everything you need as part of the operating system is very convenient," the reader continued. "It certainly reduces the complexity of using a PC and saves from having to buy extra software to do the things you want to do. I like the ability to view images directly in WinXP. If you want to do image editing, however, you still need to buy a separate imaging program. But there is no doubt that Microsoft's inexorable expansion of the monster OS that ate (and is continuing to eat) the world of independent software developers has reduced our choices for the PC.

"I regret that the U.S. ruling proposing to break Microsoft into an operating system company and an application development company was overturned," the reader continued. "I believe that the enormous might of Microsoft is difficult to comprehend and is not appreciated by most people. Efforts to control its pervasive power have not been nearly enough. I think that Microsoft should be divested into seven, not two, totally independent companies:

1. client operating system software company (WinXP),
2. server operating system software company (Server2003),
3. embedded operating system software company (WinCE),
4. application software company (MSOffice, Visual .Net/Studio),
5. hardware company (Xbox, etc.),
6. media company (MSNBC), and
7. internet company (MSN).

"How often do you have to see the inane MSN big blue butterfly ads on TV to realize that something must be done to rein in the ‘Jolly Blue Giant ho, ho, ho!’" the reader concluded.

Don't forget Microsoft Game Studios - the MS division assimilating all the small, innovative game designers in their continuing quest to squash innovation.

Amazing Slashdot Monkies[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#2)

I was excited with this site at first thinking that it is trying to protect consumers like me. But now I see that it is more about politics and becoming a magnet for slashdot monkies. Web already has slashdot with enough number of monkies jumping up and down bashing Microsoft for various reasons, why did you come up with this web site?

I think Microsoft should not be breaken down because most of the accusations come from Slashdot Monkies and competitiors that charge consumers significantly more.

Real, we all know how they abuse their position. Their free player is very hard to get, they always try to sell you the premium Real Player. Their player is more like spyware.

Apple, charges 400$ over 3 years for an operating system which barely matches Windows XP. Only recently, their operating system solved serious problems and become a usable one. Along the way, they ditched their old MacOS 9 customers. They force you to upgrade in various ways, not releasing security patches for older systems, breaking apps by making thing incompatible, etc...

Sun, was making money by charging a premium for its Sparc machines. Now we have cheaper machines, thus Sun has to find a way to stay at business. Their Java didn't make any change on the desktop. Nobody uses Java for desktop apps. Result? They sued Microsoft. Even on European case, they complained about Microsoft's server-to-server technology, not even related to desktops. Now they earned 2 billion dollar, which prompted many to believe that they were somewhat right in their bashing Microsoft.

Microsoft has been convincted by a biased judge. The appeals court removed the judge. The judge was so biased that, he didn't allow the defense of Microsoft at all.

Netscape was charging money for the browser, Microsoft gave it away, people said this is abuse. Linux companies giving away the operating system, nobody cares, as long as it doesn't hurt Apple of course.

Again and again, these are against the consumers. I am technically capable more than anybody else here, but what I see is the abuse of technical knowledge, probably because you love Apple so much, less probably you believe in communism, even less probably you like Sun. In any case, I think the bashing against Microsoft is simply being against consumers, and reflect the real value of the site.
