Reader Voices: Intuit Crippleware

My most recent Weblog item about Inutit’s sunsetting policies for QuickBooks prompted readers to inform me of several others ways Intuit cripples its products in order to force customers to upgrade to the latest version.

Quicken 2000 customers have recently been notified by Intuit that as of May 18, 2004, online services for the product are being discontinued. "The reason I purchased Quicken 2000 in the first place was to do online banking," one outraged reader wrote. "Now they are requiring me to move to Quicken 2004 if I wish to continue. Can they do that? If there isn’t a law against it, there should be."

One reader discovered that a feature he uses in Quicken 2000 won’t be supported even if he upgrades to Quicken 2004. "I've been using Quicken 2000 to track my portfolio, in which I have a large number of over-the-counter securities," the reader wrote. "Today, I get a message that the online quotes feature of Quicken 2000 is going away on May 18th, and to continue to use the online download feature I need to upgrade to Quicken 2004. But Quicken 2004 does not permit you to download quotes for a number of symbols that are supported by Quicken 2000. After spending over an hour on the phone with Inutit, they told me Quicken users who trade pink sheet or other over-the-counter securities are just out of luck."

And several readers report another way Intuit encourages QuickBooks users to upgrade -- by crippling TurboTax. "Quickbooks and TurboTax integrate quite nicely, and it saves quite a bit of time and hassle re-keying data," one reader wrote. "Well, this year TurboTax 2003 won't import anything from versions of Quickbooks that are not at least 2002. We have QB 2001 and have not seen compelling features or enhancements to move from 2001 to any new version. We actually looked at 2004 and determined it was too slow, but with this little forced upgrade feature in TurboTax, if I want to be able to import data from Quickbooks, I will need to upgrade. Funny, I just came here to post a bitch about Intuit in an older thread.  Lo and behold, there's a new one for me!

You know the drill... yearly reinstall of the OS and all the apps.  Quickbooks Pro 2003 is, of course, "registerware" -- the last damn application requiring what amounts to product activation that ever got my money (or ever will again).  

Well, I couldn't register online, because a product with that serial number was already registered! (Go figure!) I had to spend ten minutes on the phone with Intuit to get it fixed, and had to fend off two separate hard-sell attempts at getting me to sign up for some support deal.  $#&*%!@#(!@!#$

I hate Intuit and rue the day I bought Quickbooks.  I should have known better.

I also feel sorry for the people who will have to go through the same ordeal with a dozen or more pieces of software, thanks to product activation.

Same here, changed from a desktop to a laptop. When I reinstalled Quicken 2002 it wanted my registration number. No problem I thought, I kept a record of that - except it didn't work. Quicken's tied it to the hardware configuration of the machine!

And they have the nerve to want me to pay them to re-register it, claiming it's "technical support" and saying the licence allows them to charge. They're wrong, as it's not technical support (the program wants a registration number, that Quicken is supposed to supply - if they don't supply it, that's not the program's fault, that's the company's fault!) but who's got the money and time to take them to court over it?

I have QuickBooks. They have sent me at least a dozen notices asking me to update for payroll. I write exactly one payroll check per month: to me. I used to do all payroll by hand. When they cut off payroll updates later this year, I'm simply going to go back to doing it by hand. SHould they remotely cripple QuickBooks 2001 somehow, then I'll set up excel spreadsheets like I used to do for my corporate books. I've already discussed it with my accountant. They won't get my money again.

How long should software be supported?[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#3)

I can see the point of view of the customer, but I think you need to also look at it from Intuit's point of view. As I understand it, they changed the protocol they used for online payments a while back. They were having to support both versions on their servers, and perhaps it was impacting them. At some point, they want to stop supporting an alternate method that is only used by what they see as obsolete software. How long should they keep supporting it? Quicken 2000 is already 4 releases old. You can get Quicken basic for free by buying Turbotax, which many people do. As for the issue of Quickbooks and the tax feature not working with this year's Turbotax, I think it's the same issue. How many years of QB should they test with (and be required to support) for compatability? Should they be forced to continue to support old versions (and we're not talking about last year's version here). I will grant that QB is much more expensive than Quicken, but I think it is a similar issue. Note I have no relationship with Intuit other than a sometimes satisfied customer.

As long as the banks use the same protocal, then QB 2000 users should be allowed to use it. Until the banks change the protocal, no one should be forced to use QB2004. I am in the software business, and I support users all the time with fixes. Intuit is just trying to squeeze people to pay, similar to Microsoft. This is forced upgrade, not some compelling reason that users want. I used TurboTax for two years to file my taxes. I decided to drop them this yeari (I feel very bad already last year with their product activation, but this year I decided that I do not want to suport Intuit anymore). I'm using both TaxCut and TaxAct this year (to verify against each other). Maybe, one of these days, the IRS will accept an opensource product. I'll be happy as a lark for that.

I wonder if banks have to pay to provide online banking support for quicken.  If intuit forces customers to upgrade to a new version that can't use the old online banking protocol, they can force the customers to complain to their banks who would then have to turn around and upgrade also.

eh, maybe too conspiracy theoryish there.

Ultimately they need competition!!! No company with a decent amount of competition would even consider Pi----g off their customers so much. As long as my bank does not change their program (which it assures me it has not), there should be no problem.

Apparently what Intuit has done is place a bit of code in Quicken similar to the following:

Just today, my father (who handles the books for our business) said he can't download transactions from our bank as he had done weekly for the past three years. He said there was a message that we had to upgrade to 2006 to continue to use online banking. My response was that just cannot be right- however it turns out to be true. I cannot concieve of a more sleazy business practice that utilizes extortion to extract money from its customers. In researching this I find I am not alone in my disbelief and disgust. It is also apparent that Intuit couldn't give a rat's behind about the ethics of this or their customer's complaints. However, I purchased my vesion at Costco and I will make clear my disgust with a vendor of theirs. Costco will listen to my issues with Intuit. Perhaps if the mass merchants stopped buying from Intuit, they would take notice.

It's not an alternative to QuickBooks, but I switched from Quicken to Moneydance years ago because I disliked Intuit's policies. Not sure it has all the securities stuff people want yet (I don't have any...) although it has some. It supports online banking but not necessarily for all banks (you have to go through their online support to get a definitive answer, but their e-mail support has always been fast and efficient for me). http://www.moneydance.com/ Not affiliated with the company other than being a happy user.

... at the messages my bank leaves for me on my online banking system. The downside to their system is that you're never notified when there is a new message. So I find this posted back in January 2004:
We recently received this information from Intuit and consider it valuable information for you, our internet banking customers, who are using Quicken.

Upcoming Changes to Online Services in Quicken 98, Quicken 99 and Quicken 2000.

With the number of customers using current versions of Quicken growing, Intuit Inc. has begun notifying users of Quicken 98, 99 and 2000 that Online Services will be discontinued as of April 20, 2004 (for Quicken 98 and 99 users) and May 18, 2004 (for Quicken 2000 users). Online services include online bill pay; downloading financial data from your bank, credit union, credit card, brokerage or mutual fund accounts; and downloading stock quotes, news headlines and other financial information into Quicken and uploading portfolio information from Quicken to Quicken.com. I don't use Quicken, and because of something like this, I never will, either. As an aside, I was just discussing this with another individual the other day, he informed me that when he complained about having to be forced to upgrade, Intuit offered him the upgrade for free as opposed to paying $40, and he's happy with that.

The history of software is repeated over and over again if the program is not essential (i.e. and operating system) realtively lower cost and there is competion if you turn against your customers you will lose I switch with turbo tax and will switch with Quicken
