Live Gripes

By Ed Foster, Section The Gripelog
Posted on Fri Dec 24, 2004 at 11:23:29 PM PDT

I have a gripe, and it's about me. I'm too slow. I can't handle all the gripes coming into the GripeLog, and it means that some that deserve attention never get posted. So we're going to try an experiment: Live Gripes.

Jeff Foster, my webmaster and progeny, has suggested we take advantage of the "diaries" feature in the Scoop weblog engine we use on our site to permit readers to post new gripe stories directly. Of course, readers can already post comments on any of the stories that I post, but in the Live Gripes section you'll now be able to post a story yourself to initiate a new topic. That'll help get around the bottleneck that is me.

As readers start posting their stories, you can read and comment on them in the Live Gripes section. To post a story yourself, first log into your posting account and then go the Live Gripes posting page. If you don't already have a posting account for the GripeLog, you can create one here-- it's free to register and only takes a minute.

So let's give it a try. Please try to keep your gripe short and to the point, but give us enough of the basics so your fellow readers can respond to your issue. Of course, we reserve the right to remove any stories we consider inappropriate, but as much as possible we will try to leave it up to readers and their comments to show us which stories they think deserve attention.

I created an account, got the email confirming it, returned, attempted log-in apparently not up to snuff. posted a comment--only to have it appear as anonymous, which is okay. hludens14@yahoo.com

Sorry, neither Jeff nor I are professional tech manual writers, and it shows. Once you have a posting account, you have to log in. In the righthand column of the page you should see a "Login" box with fields to enter your username and password. Once you're logged in, the system recognizes who you are and you can go to the Live Gripes posting page. -- Ed

There seems to be a problem getting logged in. No matter what I do it tells me "Invalid login". I reset my password and had a new one sent to me. I still get "Invalid login". /shrug

Not a big deal, but would there be a way from the home page to indicate if new Live Gripes have been posted since the last visit? The way it works for the comments would be great.

As a matter of fact, yes I am too lazy to just click on the Live Gripes link to check if new live gripes have been posted :-)

If you look to the right column on the home page, you will see a "live gripes" box, with direct links to the last 9 gripes posted.

Thanks, Jeff; I didn't even notice the stuff on the right side.

By the way, have you noticed that this topic on the home page is not synched with the same topic on the Live Gripes page?

Thanks for your suggestions, but why do you think we should disable anonymous posting? -- Ed Foster

I most definitely think you should NOT disable anonymous posting -- all that does is discourage people who otherwise might be willing to blow the whistle on some unscrupulous outfit.

Make it so that anyone can post anonymously as long as they log in first.  That will prevent people from posting inappropriate material and still allow people to hide their identities.

There's no point to requiring creation of an account to make anonymous posts. The account created will likely be a bogus name created using a free/temporary email address. I think anonymous posting is important to a site like this, and should continue.

There have already been a few posts from company insiders on the HP thread, who clearly wouldn't have posted if they couldn't do so anonymously.

Adding a report this post type of link to each post would be a good idea though. It could send an email to both Ed & Jeff who could review and remove the bad posts. I've sent Ed notification of 2 posts recently that were filled with HTML gibberish and links using the submit a gripe link.

Why no anonymous?[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#16)
by ethiksgradient on Tue Jan 04, 2005 at 01:49:18 PM PDT

I've been involved in a number of community sites around the web, and anonymous posting has only ever been a temporary measure.

I'd like to think that the internet is inhabited by people who act like adults who know when a facility is there for their convenience.

However, the harsh reality is that sooner or later the crapflooders WILL arrive and they WILL ruin the current excellent S/N ratio.

Short of disabling new account creation, your only real weapon against the idiots is to require an account with a real, working email address; this at the very least forces them to go off to Yahoo or wherever to create their next persona.

By disabling anonymous posting you're raising the bar that little bit that might discourage otherwise drive-by idiots. Every little helps, and all that.

To those who say that anonymous posting allows whistleblowers to post safely, I sympathise, but also point out that there are a number of places you can get a free, throwaway email account that's otherwise unconnected with you and does not require you to identify yourself in any way.

Another side-benefit of non-anonymous posting is that in a discussion, you can track who it is you're replying to.

I would add that I occasionally page back through all the entries on the site looking for updates. What I mostly find are anonymous junk entries with links to unrelated sites. Anything that makes those posts less convenient to make is a benefit to all members of our community.

We've had a recent attack of those junk posts on stories going back to 2003. Jeff's trying to clear them up and find a way to block future ones. But I don't know that eliminating anonymous posting would stop that particular spammer, because he's also been known to use posting accounts for some of his attacks. -- Ed
