RealNetworks Restricts Mac Users to Mac Info

Ever hear of a company that refused to tell you about its products? There's a real one: RealNetworks. I read about RealPlayer10 so I wanted to find out about it. Went to the web site, and it sensed my OS and only showed me info on RealPlayer for the Mac. The new version is not available for the Mac (no surprise), but I was still curious. There is apparently no way to see info about the PC version from a Mac. Even a link labeled "RealPlayer for PC" took me to the Mac software. Very frustrating. This is nothing new, I have seen this previously. I think the lawsuit between Real and Microsoft is really about which is the most arrogant company.

A quick test by my webmaster using a Mac system confirmed the behavior this reader reports.

If you are using Safari on the Mac and have the Debug menu enabled, you can change the Uer Agent to "Windows MSIE 6.0". If you do this, you will be able to explore the full Real.com site and read about the pc-only RealPlayer 10. This trick also works with some of the other music services that otherwise block out Mac users.

For a while on Download.com you couldn't look at anything but Mac software with a Mac browser and Linux with Linux. You could look at everything with a windows browser, however. In fairness, I think this was an error with the navigation architecture and it seems to be fixed now.

MacCenter, South Florida's oldest Apple Specialist Dealer, has announced that it will host the first ever virtual book signing in South Florida, on Saturday May 22nd, as part of their "Meet and Geek" event.

The virtual book signing will allow Nitrozac and Snaggy, authors of "The Best of The Joy of Tech" published by O'Reilly Press, to appear at the MacCenter store from their home in British Columbia, by the use of Apple's iChatAV software and iSight camera to provide live video conferencing. The authors will be able to interact with fans, and sign books electronically using digital ink.

Other events planned for the Meet and Geek event include:

  • demonstrations of moblogging featuring Chris Hoar of Textamerica.com,
  • weblogging with movabletype.com,
  • seminars on Apple Technology,
  • music demonstrations featuring GarageBand and iTunes,
  • giveaways,
  • and local personalities and charities.
The virtual book signings will be held at various times throughout the afternoon. Please visit this page for full event schedule information.
