ZoneLabs Will Not Abandon Win 98 Users

I’m pleased to report that ZoneLabs has reconsidered the policy I described in my recent weblog item in terms of following Microsoft’s schedule for sunsetting different versions of Windows. And that means ZoneLabs will not drop support for Windows 98 on March 31st of next year, as Microsoft is scheduled to do.

ZoneLabs CEO Gregor Freund said the company will decouple its support timeframe from Microsoft’s. “The main reason we didn’t continue support for Windows NT was there was simply not enough users out there anymore for us to say the product is sufficiently tested,” Freund said. Windows 98 will continue to be supported as long as it has a large enough presence in the Zone Alarm customer base for adequate beta testing, he said. He also said the company will clarify its OS support policies on its website. “There was a certain amount of confusion about our policy, and we apologize for not clearing that up sooner.”
ZoneLabs has also made a change to help compensate those NT customers who had time remaining on their subscriptions when support for the operating system was dropped last spring. Such customers should write to Unsupported_OS@zonelabs.com to arrange to have their remaining subscription applied after they upgrade to a supported OS, ZoneLabs officials said.
