Excel Can't Read Works Spreadsheet Files

An annoyed reader writes:

I just discovered that feature-bloated Microsoft Excel XP and 2000, which can read or save in over two dozen different spreadsheet formats, specifically -- and more than likely deliberately -- lacks a converter for reading .wks files from MS's poor step-sibling, Works, version 3.0 or later. Is Microsoft so afraid of one of their own crippled products taking over the office desktop? Of course, according to the Microsoft Support Knowledge Base, the solution is to save it in a different, supported format. Bloody unlikely if you're the non-Works-owning recipient of one of these files.

Office won't read Works files?[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#1)

We've got Office 97 installed at work, and some of the users that teach on the side require their students to write essays  - standard for college homework. Now, college students have never had much money, so a lot of them can't afford even the academic versions of Office. They use Works, which is bundled with the computers they buy for school.

Unfortunately, Word, Excel, and so forth won't read the equivalent Works files, which means the student has to re-save their work into a format the instructor can import - like WordPerfect.

To the best of my knowledge, this has been going on since Office 6.1 for Win 3.1. Not having fixed this points to a design decision to force people  to pay for Office.

And Bill wonders why people perceive M$FT as greedy ...

Sounds like OpenOffice might be the perfect solution - suggest to the students that they use openoffice rather than Works - it's less crippled, and can save in native Word format.

I use open office in my business. I have office 2000. Open Office creates and reads Excel files just fine. Tim VB

There is a free plug-in converter available for Word to enable it to read .WKS documents. Microsoft provides it somewhere in it's vast online support world. I have it, have used it but can't remember where from M$FT I got it. (And just to add to the confusion they use the same file name for the converter from one version of Works to the other so you don't know which version of Works you have it for, but I do believe they are downwardly compatible.) At www.microsoft.com/downloads Choose "Works" from the drop-down list. It's the first file on the list.

Hi, a converter for works spreadsheet to excel can be found at http://www.rl-software.com/ Best advice though is to switch to OpenOffice.org
