Printer Drivers

By Ed Foster, Section Gripes
Posted on Sun May 11, 2003 at 04:18:37 PM PDT
One of the common gripes I hear about printer vendors are their reluctance to provide drivers for older models when a new version of the operating system comes out. One reader, noting that HP earned its place in the GripeLog Hall of Shame in part due to such complaints, had his own nomination:

If printer driver updates wins HP #5, Xerox ought to be number one. I now have three different Xerox printer models sitting in a corner on the floor, because Xerox chose to skip updating drivers for one or more Microsoft OSes, or not to continue updating them at all for an older model. It's a real pity, because they make the best quality product of all the laser vendors, and could easily be on top of the market-share heap. Contrast that to an old 300 DPI LaserJet IIIP we have that simply refuses to die, but it's running on an XP box, because I can still get drivers.

So who do you think is the worst at updating their drivers? HP? Xerox? Or maybe Canon, Epson, Lexmark, or somebody else? And who抯 the best? Write me at foster@gripe2ed.com or post your comment.

Well, from what I have seen some of the Xerox models can actually use the HP lasrjet drivers.  We have a Xerox printer at work...  the provided Xerox drivers will NOT work.  However, using an HP laserJet driver for the Xerox printer works fine.  Something that this reader may want to try.

My beef with HP is the number of ways they've managed to break their drivers to cause "bugs" in other software. For example, there's the HP driver that didn't leave the floating point processor in the same state it found it, causing Visual FoxPro to crash after printing.

having dealt with drivers for 20 years, ever hook up an mx80 to xerox machine?, i agree. what a bummer. hp is the best at upkeep of working drivers to me. (except for the non-existence of bidi drivers for w2k)but lexmark makes some doozies. they never work well but install so politelly before they wreck the registry. xerox drivers are amazingly hard to get and always work as an hp laser jet mimic. apple drivers were hilarious since they acted in secret in a committee fashion and would find any printer, just not use it. epson drivers are somewhat virus like as the status monitor blows out your network connection. but i do applaud all of the vendors for working at a moving target. microsoft does not make it easy.

One of the most vocal complaints I've seen is that the cost of the consumables for printers is awful and the manufacturers often lose money on the printers themselves. If that's the case, wouldn't it do them well to keep upgrading the drivers for the new OSes and then slowly bump the price of the toner/inks on the older models. At least businesses would still have a choice to use their older equipment that keeps on working, but there would still be the incentive to replace the machine as the price of the extras continues to mount. What about a universal printer driver? Something that would perform at least basic printer functions? This is 2003 after all. How long have they had to perfect the printer?

With the real income for printer makers coming from consumables, it would seem prudent to maintain drivers for new OS's. I had a fairly recent Canon printer, but purchased a new PC with WinXP installed. Canon stated on their site that they would not upgrade the driver for the printer. That meant I had to purchase a new printer. You can bet it was not a Canon. So, Canon lost the consumables I had been purchasing. It would seem if Canon was making all these various printer models, the same basic driver should work. That is why you can still use a HP Laserjet IIIP on WinXP and I still use my old HP Laserjet IIID.

No longer a Canon customer[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#6)

I do have a nominee for your Hall of Shameand it goes to Canon. I received a BJC-5100 printer free when I purchased one of my Toshiba Laptops. I thought I would surprise my daughter and give her the printer for graduation. Together we took it out of the box with great expectations. When I went to retrieve the newest print drivers at the Canon website, I was informed that Canon had chosen not to provide a Windows XP driver. They did for 34 other Canon BubbleJets, but not this one. Now my daughter has a brand new paperweight. A Google search found that I was not alone in the world. Petitions have been formed on-line to complain against Canon for dumping their owners. Others have suggested alternate Canon drivers but further research shows it will only provide services in the Draft mode and may even corrupt the WXP system files. Thanks Canon, for making my life as Dad even harder! If I had the right address, I would send it back to you Fed Ex Overnight Express 10 am Delivery "COD-Collect", for all your kindness.

Use Postscript...[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#8)
by Anonymous User on Tue May 13, 2003 at 01:22:01 PM PDT

I have a very unsympathic answer to the problem: Postscript.

Generic Postscript drivers can drive old and new Postscript printers alike.  Of course, it's nice when the vendor has a customized Postscript driver (e.g. to use special features, or higher resolution), but custom drivers are not required.

Some vendors charge a premium for Postscript, but avoiding the printer driver upgrade nightmare makes it cost effective.  Of course, it makes even more sense to purchase from vendors who do not charge a Postscript premium.

And those ancient Postscript printers work perfectly well from Linux too.

Of course, none of this currently applies to cheap ink jet printers, but it should.  I cannot understand why vendors saddle themselves with different drivers for every model, instead of developing to a simple, common, Postscript driver.

It can apply to cheap ink jets. Look at Ghostscript. It runs on every platform known to man, and can print postscript to even the cheapest ink-jets.

funny, one of the most diffecult things to keep up with was the version change in postscript world as they upgraded the drivers. nec, lexmark, hp, epson all tried and failed to give us drivers that kept working as level 1 ps went to level 2 and then to whatever. the printers were expensive, so were the "custom" drivers" and so was the support. many users were so releived when they found they could use the setup features of their new ps printers to cause them to become laserjets. universal postscript drivers confused windows as it never was sure which universe they came from. postscript used by the knowledgeable is great, for us clods, just another postscript.

I love HP for drivers. The only problem I have with them is finding everything they have available. I've had problems solved by beta drivers that I only found after looking at discussion boards. I am considering linux at home and went to their page only to find Mac and MS drivers. A firend pointed me to their linux drivers on sourceforge, but still devolped and maintained by HP. There are so many drivers out there but the accessibilty is awful. Their web page used to be easier to navigate.

Really? I've found HP can be maddening for printer drivers. When I bought a new DeskJet 1220C one of the selling points was Postscript on 13x19 plain paper (great for quick proofs for a graphic designer.) Of course no one mentioned that the postscript was in the form of PressReady which Adobe had pulled the plug on about a year and a half ago and wasn't compatable with OS X and no, neither HP, Apple, nor Adobe had any intentions of providing any patches, and PowerRip 2000 only works with Epson printers... So what was that again about HP being the best for printer drivers?

My son had a Lexmark Winwriter 150c color inkjet. Worked fine for my son when he had Win95 and Win98SE computers. Slow, but decent output.

When my son built a new computer, he put WinXPPro on the new system. We were quite surprised when we went to Lexmark and found that they would never have an XP driver for the 150c.

We also had to go buy a new printer. While the Lexmark was a little cheaper, the HP was what we bought.

Printers, including Xerox, HP, and PostScript[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#14)
by Anonymous User on Thu May 15, 2003 at 10:25:54 AM PDT

HP has made its Printer Control Language (PCL) variants the second lingua franca of printers, the first being PostScript, of course. Other brand-names including one-time DEC, Xerox, NEC implement PCL clone printers. Often, if one of these companies drops the ball on driver support for a new operating system, installing the HP PCL driver from a printer of the same epoch will do the trick. This approach has bailed me out several times with my clients, turning a boat anchor into a printer working with XP, for example. But PostScript remains the best and most universal printer driver solution. Any worthwhile operating system has both a generic PostScript driver and some sort of hook for installing PostScript Printer Definitions (PPDs). Absent a tried and proven driver for a PostScript printer with your favorite operating system (an oxymoron?), install the generic PostScript driver and track down the PPD, probably from the Adobe web site. ... Yes I agree. Fargo and Primera are very bad examples. Their is no continuity in their products. I contacted Fargo support and they told me that they sold the product to Primera. Fargo doesn't feel responsible anymore and Primera phased out the product. They don't want to invest some effort writing new drivers to keep their existing customers happy. My impession is that both companies don't care about their customers.

Xerox Drivers and Downloads[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#16)
by bilbo on Thu May 15, 2003 at 06:00:21 PM PDT

Just a comment from someone inside Xerox...

I don't know about the actual driver files and what is or isn't supported, but I happen to be personally working on the Web site for the Xerox drivers and other associated downloads. One of the problems we've been seeing is that, even if the drivers are there, the Web site to search for them is hopelessly broken. I've been looking at some of the data behind the site, and it's in really sad shape. So, we're on a project to completely overhall the downloads part of the Xerox site. We're also going to clean up the old data, and provide a lot more consistency checking to make sure it doesn't get into this kind of broken state again.

I don't know what they are targeting for a roll-out date, but it will be very soon.

So, there's some hope.

Epson has an ink jet printer that not only prints photos but also prints to CD/DVD media directly. The model is: Stylus Photo 900 and 960. It has both USB and Parallel ports but drivers are not available for Windows NT. I can see if a printer only had and USB port why it would not support NT, but since it has a parallel port, it could very easily run on NT. When I contacted Epson, they said thet had plans to support Windows NT. Epson is certainly losing out on potential business by not supporting Windows NT on those models. If they don't someone else will. Ken Slotkowski

Logitech and Best Data (if you're a Mac user)[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#19)
by PhillyMJS on Mon May 19, 2003 at 05:21:51 PM PDT

Logitech is on my sh*t list because they refuse to make OS X drivers for any of their slightly-older webcams. They've released about 30-40 webcams in the last few years. How many have Mac OS X drivers? None! I've got two of them, and they're paperweights when it comes to using them with my G4 running OS X-- one of them, a QuickCam Pro USB (beige focus ring) doesn't even have XP drivers, so I'm doubly screwed-- can't even use it with my PC.

Logitech's indifference to their Mac OS X-using customers continued until last week. Until then, they didn't make OS X drivers for any of their cameras, current or discontinued, but now they have some for their "Pocket Digital" camera. (I am aware of the 3rd-party generic webcam drivers that work with some of the older Logitech stuff, but the cameras I own are not on the 'supported' list.)

As for Best Data, about 2 years ago I bought one of their external USB modems-- I needed one for my Mac to use its Caller ID capability with my home automation setup. Anyway, at the time I bought it, Mac OS 9.0.4 was the most recent Mac OS version. The modem worked fine. When Apple released OS 9.1, I suddenly found my USB modem would no longer work, and I wasn't alone-- a change to the Mac OS broke the driver. The modem was about 4 or 5 months old at this point. Best Data decided to not bother updating their drivers for Mac OS 9.1, rendering my less than 6 month-old modem useless-- and ensuring that Best Data will never again see a dollar of my money.

Xerox & Minolta Printer issues[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#20)
by Anonymous User on Sat May 24, 2003 at 01:42:25 PM PDT

I purchased a Xerox WorkCentre M950 multifunction printer for $199.99 because it had an Auto-feeding scanner and will photo copy. Unfortunately the printer installs a GDI driver which is unstable especially when printing over my home network. Xerox says that they are dropping support for this printer and getting out of the consumer business. Therefore they will not be updating the drivers anymore and will never provide any signed drivers for XP or for Windows 2003. I also bought a Minolta 1100L laser printer so I could reduce the cost of replacing the ink cartridges in my other printers. Unfortunately I discovered that it too installs a GDI driver and intermittently works over the network and also in order to be able to print the print server must have an administrator logged into the console. Additionally if the machine is rebooted while the printer is in power save mode the printer will not print until the printer is power cycled. Minolta is saying they don't support XP with this printer and will never do so with out explanation. Nor will they ever fix the power issues either. I believe printer manufactures should be held to the same standards other manufactures are such as fitness for a particular purpose which would mean that if they produce a product which doesn't work correctly they should be required to either fix it or refund your money. They should also be required to disclose if they are using non-standard drivers or method for printing such as using GDI drivers. The net effect of GDI drivers is that if you don't have their software you can't print at all even with a generic printer driver.

Hardware rendered obsolete by newer OS[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#22)
by mgdurrant on Thu May 29, 2003 at 12:53:36 PM PDT

I have a Sony photo printer, about three years old. It prints 4X6 photos on a proprietary glossy paper. No driver support newer than W95 or Mac OS 8.6. No postscript. Supplies (expensive) only available from a couple of remainder places. Sony has newer models that look similar, but made sure that the cartridges are incompatible. I have piles of hardware, in perfect running condition, for which I have no W2K, WXP or OSX drivers. Scanners are a particular problem. Unlike printers, there are no supplies to sell, so manufacturers have no incentive to update drivers, they just want you to buy a new one. Scanners don't wear out very fast either.

It has been my experience, and I'm not saying that what I say is final, that there are two printer manufacturers in the world. HP, and not HP. I have owned Canon, Epson, HP, NEC, Okidata, Fargo, Star. HP has drivers, Xerox works with HP drivers, NEC does too. Epson, had three, a laser (hp drivers) will run forever, a dotmatrix (epson driver) crushes rocks better than a blender crushes ice, Inkjet biggest piece of crap ever owned (crumby epson drivers). Okidata, had an LED, worked great, ok driver support. Canon, BJC-4300, flimsy low quality plastic, ink cart.s are a joke, driver support, they aren't expected to last until the next OS release. Lexmark I have worked with. Don't bother, they are cute little printers, your probably going to replace the printer before you replace the ink cart.s. The short answer to drivers in general Type of printer - Industry standard Dotmatrix- Epson or Star Laser- HP Inkjet- none, if it doesn't work, try this years models version (EG you have a BJC4200, try BJC4300)

The short answer to drivers in general
Type of printer - Industry standard:
Dotmatrix- Epson or Star
Laser- HP
Inkjet- none, if it doesn't work, try this years models version (EG you have a BJC4200, try BJC4300)

unknowningly, i screwed up the printer drivers for this xerox printer because i tried to install the correct xerox drivers for it to replace the hp drivers so that i could set some features on it for printing. it stopped working. everyone yelled at me in the office for doing it.

I recently had to clear my hard drive and reload, losing essentially everything. I have a Lexmark all-in-one that I cannot find the disk for. Now that MS has stopped supporting 98, Lexmark will no longer support it, either. To Hell with both Microsoft and Lexmark
