Ubisoft Disabling Game if Virtual Drive Software is Present

Usage Restrictions--Nasty EULA Terms--Intrusive Software
A report on the computer game site Evil Avatar claims that a patch issued for one of Ubisoft's games, Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield, is searching the computer on which it's installed for virtual drive programs, and if one is found refusing to run the game. Virtual drive programs such as Alcohol 120% or CloneCD are used to copy the contents of a CD onto a hard disk, which allows the user to bypass the copy protection schemes that rely on having the original CD in the drive to play. Ubisoft claims that their copy protection scheme is covered under their EULA, but observers see nothing in the EULA that seems to indicate this. Suggestions that the problem may be due to a bug in Macrovision's SafeDisc 2, the copy protection scheme that Raven shield uses also seem doubtful, as the software was able to work on computers with virtual drvie programs prior to the latest patch.

Update [2003-12-26 20:20:11 by Jeff Foster]:It appears that Ubisoft has backed down and released a patch to fix the problem for Raven Shield. No word on whether they will do the same for other games with the same problem that are mentioned in the comments below.

Other UBI Soft Games Do this Too[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#1)

Their other game, XIII did this too, from the day of release. They have already mentioned that its INTENTIONAL, so I do not see how it can be 'unintentional' for another of their games. What makes it worse is that a lot of the Dell / HP / newbie-machines come with pre-installed OEM CD burning software such as nero or EZ CD Creator, which has virtual drive, which stops the game from working. So here we have a product which doesn't even work on your average, purchased by a non-hardware savy gamer, from Dell / whatever... and now the non-techy is being told to 'disable virtual drives' ?? This is a bad move by UBI.

This is ridiculous...[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#4)

...because all the better Virtual Drive tools like "Daemon Tools" allow you to rename the driver, so that it isn't found....

So this limitation hits only their non-tech customers, because the game freaks - and of course the alleged or real bad guys - use the better tools....

And frankly, i use the daemon tools because i don't want to swap disks, not because i'd pirate games....

UBISoft also does this for their major disc-swapping game "Beyond Good And Evil". The actual mention of the fact that you have to disable your virtual drives are in the guts of the technical support type document. This is really pathetic. What makes it worse is that if the system even thinks you might have a virtual drive, it will either fail to work, or intentionally cause gameplay glitches because it believes you're a pirate.

This is just ridiculous.  I was planning on buying Beyond Good and Evil, but I guess they don't want my money.

Virtual Drives make life worth living[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#5)

Well not really but they make a lot of titles worth having. I have small children and I image all their game titles and create shortcuts so they never need the CDs (which I lock up). Prior to using VirtualCD they were scratching and ruining the disks (my only working copy of Minigolf is on the harddrive since the CD is now toast). I also access titles that I have imaged far more frequently than those that require me to hunt for the physical CD. I get upset when a CD title requires the CD for copy protection but I get even more irate when it won't let me image it or make a backup copy.

Perhaps I should have worded the second and third sentences of my posting differently, because I guess they don't get the point across. SkunkLink is a nice, simple model, with intuitive markup to go with it, but as a model plus markup, it doesn't say anything about what apps might do with the markup. ("When a link contains multiple arcs with the same prominence, the arcs in question are intended as alternatives for selection by the end user. As with the arc-type, implementations are free to interpret the prominence in any suitable manner.") down udown
