Belkin Router Redirects Browser to Advertisement

By Ed Foster, Section UnFairUse
Posted on Fri Nov 07, 2003 at 02:44:57 PM PDT
Intrusive Software -- Adware -- Privacy Peril
A Belkin wireless router now redirects an HTTP request once every eight hours to an advertisement. The ad promotes a six month free trial for Belkin's parental control service.
Reader Reports, Company Website

A Belkin customer who has discussed the issue with the company writes:

Here's the scenario. You click a link on your browser to go to site X. Your Belkin router doesn't take you to X. Instead, it takes you to a Belkin advertising page. It will intercept your port 80 request and do this every eight hours for as long as you own the router. There are only two ways to turn this off. One is to click on a specific link on the advertising page. The other is to go into the router config and go to the "Parental Controls" and turn off the "feature".
This behavior has been confirmed by Belkin (to the news.admin.net-abuse.email newsgroup), though Belkin calls it a "feature" and not an advertisement. They're trying to sell a paid subscription parental control by offering you 6 months free. Apparently, though, the site doesn't mention the actual price you'll be charged after those 6 months.
I don't know about anyone else, but a company that thinks it's okay to violate trust and hijack my browser to push an advertisement will no longer be on my "acceptable supplier" list.

I would like to suggest that it is time you started a WEB page of the companies that are on your gripe log, their faults and if possible a rating of how bad they are. I know that so far, I will not purchase Lexmark printers, Intuit Tax (and Quicken) software and now Belkin routers because of their practices. and I'd like to be able to go to this page and see the status of other companies. My guess is that it should be a dense page with complany names and perhaps short phrases as to their behavior and then pointers to the details and to any comment they may want to make. Thanks for the ongoing work...

i'm with you in that I will not purchase Lexmark printers.  I switched to TaxCut last year.

You can add Zonelabs on the list[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#8)

I bought Zonelabs alarm pro 1.5 years ago. Paid, entered the serial number and some code in the correct boxes.. No problem. One year later, I had to reformat my hard drive. Tried to reinstall Zonealarm.. The program just told me that my code was too old. Contacted the company by mail, to no avail. Got answers like "please upgrade", "your code is valid only for a year", etc.. So, I'm stuck with a soft I bought, but that ZoneLabs doesn't allow me to use anymore. Do the users that advocate activation really think that, when a newer version will be out, they will still be able to get another activation for their "old" software? Of course not.

Belkin[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#3)

I'm willing to give Belkin a second chance on this one.  They made a very stupid decision and pissed off a lot of folks, but they're apparently trying to make it right.  If we don't "reward" these kinds of decisions, what incentive is there for a company to actually do the right thing?

That said, there are some companies that are just hopeless -- Intuit comes to mind.  They've been abusing their customers for years -- the DRM scheme was beyond the last straw.

It's more than just a stupid AD decision[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#4)
by Anonymous User on Tue Nov 11, 2003 at 11:32:08 AM PDT

The sad part, is it's more than just a stupid AD decision.  It actually affects the way the product works in very fundamental ways that it shouldn't.

For starters, it assumes that all HTTP traffic is from a web browser where a user is sitting there.  This presents only a minor annoyance to a user.  We use automated test scripts to check the status of web applications automatically.  This behavior would produce an error that the application was down since the page returned wasn't expected.  Alternatively, many applications use HTTP for internal communications now, and this would disrupt them.  Think of a weather bug that gets the current weather.  Both of which are things a router shouldn't affect.

A more serious problem, is one of the ways you can turn off the problem.  Clicking on a link on a web page allows the website to change an administrative feature on the router.  This means even though you may not want to administer the router from the WAN side, there is a built in administrative access that you cannot turn off.  This presents a security venerability.  If I have to put another firewall between this router and the Internet to protect it, I might as well just use the other firewall as the only router.

Agreed, but...[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#5)
by Mason on Tue Nov 11, 2003 at 04:39:15 PM PDT

I agree with your sentiments, and would add that (while I don't know exactly how the http request is hijacked) the potential for sending sensitive information to Belkin exists as well (query string / POSTed data / etc).

I've read a lot of scenarios like the one you've given (test scripts failing), but the potential damage cited is WAY overblown, especially in a business / mission-critical application.  How many businesses will be using a Belkin home router for their mission-critical services?  How many monitoring scripts ring alarms and wake people from bed when one ping goes awry, instead of trying again and logging the anomaly?

Here's how I see it:  They screwed up, bigtime.  Damn near the entire tech industry got up in arms about it (rightly so), and now they're offering to fix their screwup, and being quick about it.  They don't have a history of similar screwups.  I'd call that listening to the customers and doing the right thing.

You can bet all the other companies who produce routers for home use took notice, too.

why not reward companies doing it right first?[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#9)
by Anonymous User on Wed Nov 12, 2003 at 09:46:18 AM PDT

if we don't "reward" the decision, there's a pretty damn huge incentive for a company to do the right thing - *in the first place*. . . and why should i reward them for fixing their product that was not only purposely broken but then given some b.s. marketing spin as to why we should appreciate the hijack when people first started to complain about it?. . .

the *only* reason they're supplying a firmware fix is 'cuz of the *massive* bad publicity they got and not 'cuz they thought they did anything wrong - in other words, the fix was only issued to salvage their reputation. . . i don't wanna buy my hardware from a company like that. . .

and besides, wouldn't it make more sense for me to reward other companies like linksys or netgear for putting out product that works properly in the first place?. . .

Firmware update[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#7)
by Jeff Foster on Wed Nov 12, 2003 at 05:49:14 AM PDT

The problem with the firmware update is that the people who know what firmware is and how to update it have already turned off the "feature". It's the people (the vast majority I would guess)who only have a foggy idea as to what a router does, much less what firmware is or how to update it that are going to have problems. This leads to the question whether Belkin will be shipping new routers of this model with the old firmware or the new one. Belkin hasn't said one way or the other as far as I know.

Belkin patch[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#14)
by Anonymous User on Fri Nov 14, 2003 at 07:08:41 AM PDT

The Belkin website says only that the patch will eliminate redirects that happen during the installation process. The original post said the redirect happens every 8 hours. If the original complaint was true, the purported fix does not say anything about changing that continuing action. Maybe it is just a dangling participle. . . From the Belkin web site: "This upgrade will rid the redirect completely so that no additional browser windows will appear during the router's installation process."

Perpetual Punishment?[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#10)
by byelen on Thu Nov 13, 2003 at 07:22:50 AM PDT

I have some Belkin wireless products. Had they not rethought their recent policy I would have stopped purchasing anything from them. However, having reversed themselves, they are "back on my list" and I will purchase from them in the future, if the product and my needs warrants it. I agree it's better for companies not to do these things in the first place, but it's counter-productive to continue "punishing" them once they quit the objectional practice.

[ Reply to This ]

I agree..[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#11)
by Reziac on Thu Nov 13, 2003 at 09:02:12 AM PDT

To repeat what I posted elsewhere on the subject:

That's my take on it too. They got bitchslapped for implementing a Dumb Idea, and they're now saying, "You're right, that WAS dumb... give us a few days and we'll fix it."

If a company makes a mistake, or even a major blunder, but owns up to it and fixes it, that tells me they really DO care about their customers. This is a far cry from a company that tries to excuse their behaviour and wants US to live with the consequences.

So while I won't buy this particular Belkin product, Belkin's behaviour is NOT deserving of an across-the-board boycott.

What people also forget in their rush to find "some other product, ANY other product" is that other companies may have implemented naughties that you don't yet KNOW about. So in your haste to punish the erring company, you may well be jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire.

Sometimes I think people who go off the deep end over honest blunders like this one, should be cast into the outer darkness the first time they majorly screw up. That'd teach 'em a little restraint. ;)

I partly agree[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#12)
by microbee on Thu Nov 13, 2003 at 09:57:00 AM PDT

I agree with the principle of not punishing forever a company which owns up to an error and fixes it. We all make mistakes, and a prompt appropriate response earns bonus points in my book. But this was not a simple error. This was a deliberate decision to break a well-understood standard technology. I'm sure their techies screamed bloody murder about this "feature". Somehow Belkin management decided to go with Marketing on this one. I'm assuming that same management team is still in place; when they are faced with another such decision in the future, how can they be trusted to make the right choice? It's not so much a matter of punishment as a matter of trust. With so many competitive alternatives, why go with someone who has shown bad judgment?

So should we forgive Intuit too?[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#13)
by Ed Foster on Thu Nov 13, 2003 at 02:07:45 PM PDT

Intuit says it's seen the error of its ways with TurboTax product activation, so should all those customers who switched to TaxCut give Intuit another chance?

I'm being a bit facetious there, of course. You have to treat this story as another data point that helps you make decisions. If you're a Belkin customer who likes their products and have had good experiences dealing with them, you probably will want to give them another chance. On the other hand, if you haven't dealt with them before, this story suggests you might want to think twice about doing so.

One more thing about forgiving companies who correct their mistakes. There are marketers out there who maintain the old philosophy of "there's no such thing as bad publicity." They'll see what they can get away with, and then retreat on those things the market won't tolerate. I'm not saying that's the case with Belkin -- they sound truly contrite -- but you always have to wonder what other things a company may be doing that are going unnoticed.

Perpetual, yes[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#15)

Belkin isn't sorry they planted a trojan in their routers, they're sorry they got caught.

If they fired the people responsible for the decision to install a trojan inside their routers, then that would show a sincere desire for change. Instead, the same people with no ethics or honesty are still employed by Belkin and who knows what they might try next?

It is not productive to reward a company that's seeing what it can get away with over a company that has always played fair.

Not Overblown[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#16)
by Anonymous User on Fri Nov 14, 2003 at 01:33:53 PM PDT

I disagree.  Sure, in most cases, in most scenarios, you (or software accessing through the router) can work around the problem.  But, YOU WOULD NEVER EXPECT THE ROUTER TO HIJACK A PACKET REQUEST.  It is like a carmaker deciding that the brake pedal won't work once in a while.  Sure, you probably just pump it again, most times it won't matter.  And there are problems that make it fail by accident.  But you NEVER would expect the carmaker to decide it SHOULD fail on occasion.  It ruins trust and it WILL matter sometimes.

I've decided that Dilbert's Boss works at Belkin.  I doubt they'll do it again, but I just can't imagine the total idiocy it takes to do something like this.  I think even they've figured it out by now, but now Belkin is on my watch list big time.

Sorry, but I agree that Belkin deserves declining sales of their router based on this "feature." All of my routers route properly. I would return equipment as DEFECTIVE that hijacked traffic to the manufacturer's web site for the purpose of advertising. What if their router hijacked FTP sessions to their firmware update site -- without warning? What if their router hijacked outgoing SMTP sessions to their servers ... and inserted siglines for their products into outgoing mail -- without warning? What if their router dropped incoming P2P data ... and replaced the downloaded files with text files titled Belkin_supports_DRM_and_not_P2P_software.txt -- without warning? Would you call this a good router? I didn't think so. ... I've used 3 Linksys routers and have been very happy. To #311 with Belkin. :(

The p2p thing is where you stepped on your tongue.  How can you possibly believe that it's ok for people to hijack other people's work (software, music, etc) via p2p file sharing and think that it's wrong to hijack a few packets?  I agree that what Belkin did was wrong, and yes, to #3ll with them; however, stealing software, music, and movies is a much larger violation of trust being performed by customers instead of big companies.  I don't want to get into a big debate about p2p here, and I know there are a few legit uses for p2p software such as freeware distribution, etc.  The point is just that DRM protects the rights of people (and big companies) to protect their work from being hijacked.  Please, don't argue both sides of the fence.

Hey Anonymous, do you think that davidspalding is around? Did you notice his post was from Dec 2003? It is now April 2006 and It appears the "hi-jacking" is happening again! I've been using this router for almost 2 years now... and never had a problem with it. All of a sudden, about 2 weeks ago or so, I keep getting re-directed to the "ad"! What's going on?

belkin again[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#22)
by Anonymous User on Sat Dec 15, 2007 at 03:34:38 PM PDT

This discussion is old and there may be a new thread somewhere, but oh well; I'll venture forth. Let me say right off the bat that I'm not as saavy about technology as the the rest of the folks who have posted here seem to be. So I am open to enlightenment and suggestions. I would just like to say this, though. Two or three years ago I became a captive audience to the Belkin ad others have referred to in this thread, and that was before I was connected to wireless. I have had wireless for two years not, but for the past couple of years I have been Belkin free, but within the last couple of weeks when I type in a web address I get the Belkin ad instead of the site I want. I noticed that in the discussion here dating from 2003 that several people were willing to forgive Belkin, because they felt that Belking had acknowledged their mistake in hijacking browser and were willing to correct it. But now it's Dec 2007 and I'm yet again being (mis)directed to the Belkin ad: I emailed them the other day and wrote: "I do not subscribe to your website or products, and do not want to. Why is it that when I try to access my internet service your webpage pops up? Please tell me how to stop this!" Belkin's Response Dec 14 2007 21:39 "Thank you for contacting Belkin Customer Support. This may be because you internet explorer home page default somehow might have got set to the Belkin homepage. please see the attached information to change internet settings thank you. " I emailed back saying that it was a mystery to me how my homepage default "somehow might have got set to the Belkin homepage." (Please note the passive voice here: "Might have got set..." But by whom? Certainly not by me! My default homepage remains the same as it was). Also, as I pointed out in my response that the attachments Belkin sent that would supposedly help me resolve this problem were unreadable. So Belkin's unethical behavior marches on, does it not? (Please feel free to set me straight if I am mistaken.)
