Out of Ink? Buy a New Printer

By Ed Foster, Section Gripes
Posted on Mon Nov 10, 2003 at 12:15:14 PM PDT
A reader points out an odd situation:
I just thought I'd pass along an interesting gripe, but one that's going to create an environmental disaster. The price of advanced inkjet printers are falling so fast that not only is replacement cheaper than repair, but replacement will soon be cheaper than MAINTENANCE. Let me give you an example.
About a year ago, I purchased an HP Photosmart 7350 inkjet printer and a black cartridge (since it only came with the color & "photo" cartridges) for $260--an excellent price at the time. A buddy of mine found that same printer, with all 3 cartridges, on clearance at Costco today for $99. The price drop doesn't bother me (well, not overly). It's the fact that he's buying the printer BECAUSE HE'S OUT OF INK ON HIS OLDER, PERFECTLY WORKING PRINTER!
By keeping the ink cartridge prices artificially high, manufacturers have gotten to the point that replacement makes more sense than maintenance. At an average retail price of ~$30 for one of my printer's cartridges, I'd pay around $90 to get 3 new cartridges, or $99 for a new printer--all 3 cartridges included? I'm no environmentalist, but this is like buying a brand new car for the same price as a set of new tires! Environmental disaster waiting to happen...

I've done the same thing several times.  When I need to replace ink, I always browse the printer area to see if any are on sale.  Break even or come out ahead, and sell the old one for a couple bucks on the local newsgroup.

One thing to consider...[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#2)
by wantobe on Tue Nov 11, 2003 at 06:27:27 AM PDT

is that the ink cartridges that come with new printers have anywhere from 30-70% less ink in them than buying a new cartridge (depending on the manufacturer.) I'm not saying that it doesn't make sense to buy a new, inexpensive printer rather than the replacement cartridges, but you should definitely do the cost comparison first considering the lesser amount of ink you'll get.

Actaully, unless you really need color, most home users would be better off with an inexpensive laser printer. The cartridges cost a little more, but they have a longer life cycle and they don't dry out if you don't use them for a few weeks. The average home user probably doesn't print near as many pictures as they convince themselves they are going to when pricing ink jets. It's more economical, and probably more ecologically sound, to just pay a little extra for professional picture printing, even of digital images.

Ink jet vs Laser[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#3)

I have been preaching for years that most people do not need a color ink jet printer and are much better off with a laser. Unless you print a lot of pictures it is cheaper to send them out for processing and use a monochrome laser for everythng else. And I still have not found an inkjet that can rival a laser for quality of text printing

I would even say that if you have to print in color for whatever reason, there are some very affordable personal color laser printers out that that, in the long run, make more sense than ink jet.

But I'm a hypocrit, of course. I have 3 inkjet printers at home right now that rarely get used. In fact, I haven't even bothered downloading the drivers to install one of them to my new XP Pro computer, and the "good" one that's connected to my Mac probably won't work when I really need it because I just don't need to print all that often.

love your sig... gonna forward that to a bunch of friends... re: the article: it's a little like the extended warranties they try to sell you when you buy electronic gear. i usually set my limit at about 10% of the sales price per year. what you're describing is, in effect, a "repair" charge [of new cartridges] that's between 30% per year and 100% per year, depending on the model, etc.! if the manufacturers don't cut it out, some legislators will, which i would rather not be the case. a full cartridge complement should be about 10% of the price of the printer, and should last at least 4-6 months. if not, it's just like your excellent car/tires analogy, and that dog just won't hunt, in the long run. +af

Depends on make and model[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#6)

I've been doing this for a couple of years now, as well as recommending this practice to my customers; suggesting they donate their old printer to their favorite charity and take a tax write-off. Its usually a win-win situation as the charity gets a printer that they can use with refilled ink cartridges (prices down to the $5 range per cartridge), and the donor gets a tax write off of about half the cost of the new printer as well as a new printer with between 4x to 10x better speed, resolution, etc.

I noticed within the last several months that new HP printers are being sold with full size ink cartridges. I bought an HP DeskJet 5650 printer at Sam's Club in central Florida, paying less than $120, and it came with full size 19ml color and b&w cartridges. Not bad considering that the HP56 black cartridge goes for about $25 and the HP 57 color cartridge goes for about $40. However, this cartridge situation ain't necessarily true with Canon, Epson, and (ugh!) Lexmark.

Hey, we live in a throw-away society. My old IBM PC/XT from 1986 still works great, but who can get software for it? And why bother upgrading that 1,000 MHz Pentium III computer with new mainboard, CPU, RAM, & power supply when the same $$$ will buy a brand new 2.4GHz rig from Dell with flat panel display and Win XP and Office productivity software. I can even buy a 27" TV for under $150 - try to get the old 25" TV fixed at a repair shop for even half that cost ... So using printers in this manner only strengthens the (hopefully) obvious - as technology increases and as production increases, costs reduce and customers benefit. May it stay this way for a while longer.

As an aside - I've heard a lot about the inkjet vs. laser debate and I really believe it comes down to educated choice. Inkjets can be cheaper per page and faster per page when compared side-by-side to their laser brethren, but do have some drawbacks, notably color smear when making contact with liquid. Lasers tend to have a "crisper" text appearance but be more expensive to run from a power standpoint as they can take between 200W (at idle) and 600W (in printing) whilst the inkjet runs between 2W (at idle) and 40W (in printing). I think it really comes down to this: How nice do you want it, how long do you want it to last, is having it in color a big issue, and how much are you willing to spend across the long haul!

Toner cartridges for older printers can run up big bucks too. I was looking for one for my 5 year old Xerox P8e at Office Depot the other day and saw the price was $120ish. While checking out, I was scanning a circular and saw a new laserprinter (can't remember the brand, but it was something like Samsung), for $149. If I werent' in such a rush, I would have picked up the new printer and sold the old one on Craigs List or somehting for $40 and came out ahead.

Panasonic laser, cheaper than its own drum[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#11)
by Anonymous User on Thu Nov 13, 2003 at 03:41:12 PM PDT

I got a Panasonic 7100 laser printer, with automatic duplexing built in, for $99 after rebate at Tiger Direct. It includes 2,000 pages worth of toner, and a drum that lasts 20,000 pages. It was $140 before the rebate. The strange part is that the drum ALONE costs $143 (at buy.com). Buy the drum, and get a FREE printer with every drum!!

...that we live in a "throw-away" society, but situations like this take throwing away to a whole new level. Sure, this guy could donate the printer, but there are a few pitfalls even with that...

About 2 years ago, a company called Heller Financial was bought out by GE Capital. Instead of donating all of the 1500+ old computers that GE replaced, they paid to have them destroyed. Why? Because they got burned by the EPA. A year earlier, Heller donated their PCs to charity (per their policy at the time). One of the PCs ended up in a landfill and it somehow caught the attention of the EPA. The EPA traced the serial numbers back to Heller and fined them, despite the fact that Heller didn't dispose of it. As a result, Heller no longer donated PCs and paid to have them destroyed, which then applied to GE. Crazy, isn't it?

So be careful what you donate or throw out--or never register your items so serial numbers can't be traced back...

Refills work too[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#10)

I bought a full quart of ink for my lexmark on ebay or somewhere for under $25. I've refilled each ink cartridge 10 times before it wears out! But then I also have purchased 3 lexmark printers in the last year for free after rebate, and tossed the older one. I throw away the printers and just use the ink!

Tossing Lexmark Printers[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#13)

Gee, maybe Lexmark should reverse the way its "Prebate" program works. Instead of going to court to force customers to return their used toner cartrdiges, they should have customers return the printer instead. After all, Lexmark says they're trying to help the environment, so they wouldn't want all those excess printers lying around.

I have purchased many printers for free after rebate only to pull the ink cartridges out. In the last year I have purchased 20 lexmark printers for this very purpose. I don't throw out the printers though, I donate them to a charity that sells them. It all works out, I get free ink and a tax deduction and the charity gets to make some money.

Epson Consumables[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#15)
by Anonymous User on Tue Nov 25, 2003 at 12:24:04 PM PDT

In the 90's I worked for a repair center in Seattle, WA. Our service manager went to Epson for a Service Center meeting. After the meeting they were given the nickle tour of the facilities in LA. Two thirds of Epson's warehouse was for consumables, the other one third was for products and spare parts. I don't know how many times our customers were price shocked to find out their laser cartridge was $200.00 for a $400.00 laser printer. I believe Epson's theory was to sell the peripherals cheaply and make up the difference on the consumables.

This is the ol' razor/blades marketing theory in action. Give 'em a razor and rape 'em for years with the blades. Take a guess how many blades you can get out of each of the hundreds of WWII ships that were sold as scrap, many to these guys.

you raise a wonderful point: the vendors of inkjet printers have founded their entire industry and profitability on the base that they'll "make it up on the consumables".... when the printer itself becomes the consumable, where will they be? will they start shipping printers without cartridges, and have that as an option? if that's the next step, the Feds are going to be under a lot of consumer pressure to put a stop to that! :)

Laser just as bad as inkjet[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#18)
by Anonymous User on Sun May 07, 2006 at 06:22:07 PM PDT

I bought a laser printer last year because I got sick and tired of buying inkjet printers every other month and wanted something that would last longer. Well now the black toner on my $399 color laser printer is low. The cost to replace the toner is 90 dollars. The other three colors are at about 25%. I guess this means that I can $360 for new toner or $350 for a new printer. What you do?

This is bacause of your low quality ink, if you try good quality ink then never you have to purchase new printer. Best quality ink will also give u good prints and keep your printer safe.
