While your doctor may not mis-use your medical history, there may be nothing to prevent this genetics organization from passing on your medical history to something like the Medical Information Bureau (MIB). While the intent of the MIB is to prevent insurance fraud and reduce risk to the insurance companies, I suspect that they are looking to mine more and more data to assist in developing underwriting models that exclude coverage for certain conditions and histories. Giving up your SSN to a genetics organization, along with an extensive medical history (where you may be more honest in the interest of "research") could put an individual at some risk for coverage denial or rate increases. I don't want to go all black helicopter here, but it does concern me when information agregators start getting hold of medical information. If you think you have trouble with your credit scores and identity theft, imagine if you couldn't get insurance because someone messed with your medical history or the wrong test result was reported -- or simply because a bean counter assigned a higher risk to you because a genetics institute reported your history.

I went in to the same type of Doctor recently and was in a great deal of pain. This Doctor had performed my last colonoscopy. While filling out the forms that seem to be required every time you visit the Doctor even if you have seen them before I was asked for my Driver's License so that they could make a copy. I had just completed the forms that included my SS#, DOB, etc. Now they wanted this photo copy. I had to threaten to leave the office before the receptionis relented and made the photo copy in front of me and proceded to crop the black and white picture out to attach to the file and let me keep the rest of the photo copy. I suggested that perhaps they could inform the patients that they need a picture rather than insisting on making a photo copy of such a sesnitive document. Of course I was I was the first person to have grief with this. I think being an IT profesional may have something to do with our sensitivety level with this sort of thing.

The reason that doc's offices want alot of the info is for pursuing your bill versus health info. Why do they need multiple contact numbers and relatives info for simple exams or visits for a common cold? They want to be able to track you down if you default on the bill.

It's not that they want a duplicate of the information that you already filled out. What they want is ID to confirm that you are really the person you claim you are, not some impostor using somebody else's health insurance. If there was some question in the future the photocopied ID would show that they had confirmed that you were really you. What's your DL got that they didn't already get off your forms, other than your picture? (And the captcha: What do you mean, are you saying Lemon isn't a car??? <G>)
