There are 2 things you can do when buying Dell hardware. Order from the small business division. Anyone can do this, just use your name as the company name. This gets you a 30-day return policy with no restock charge. (At least it does on the Vostro and Lattitude products.) It does seem to result in better customer & tech support. If you have a problem like the above, call the support number, and go through the phone menus choosing the option to return your computer. That will get you to a resolutions person in the US. They have the power to solve your problem.

They will also typically offer a credit back to you to get you to keep a computer you want to return. I ordered a notebook, and called to return it 2 weeks later, and was offered over $100 refund to keep it.

Frequently, you can get better deals on hardware through the small business division than you can through the home/small office division. There are entire threads devoted to this on sites like fatwallet.com and slickdeals.net.

And of course, ALWAYS pay by credit card, NOT debit card. If they can't/won't resolve a problem, do a chargeback.
