WD Warranties[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#1)

WD plays tricks with their warranties. Most of the Caviar series drives sold in a retail box have a 1-year warranty, while the exact same drive sold in bulk/OEM (and usually for less money) have a 3-year warranty. I was hoping that when Seagate went to a 5-year warranty, WD would be forced to stop playing games with their warranties.

Same thing with the MyBook external drives. Some models are 3 year, some are 1.

My solution, buy Seagate drives, and/or use a Credit Card that adds a year to the warranty.

Warranty Date Tricks[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#2)

I recently called Lenovo about my laptop, and was told it was out of warranty. Turns out, the warranty defaults to the date of manufacture. And even though I thought I had registered when I got my rebate, I guess I didn't. To be fair, Lenovo had a whole process in place to help me get the warranty date fixed, routing me through IBM services, but I easily could have been deterred from following up by the initial online rejection if I hadn't checked exactly when I purchased the laptop.

OEM drives have warrantees?[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#3)

I always thought OEM means the manufacturer is not including a warrantee themselves? The OEM takes on the warrantee responsibility? If a hard drive that came in a Dell PC dies, I can't call the drive manufacturer for warrantee replacement - I have to go through Dell. Dell is an OEM, right?

OEM[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#4)

It's not uncommon to refer to drives sold as bulk or bare drives as OEM, even though they are technically not OEM. True OEM drives are warrantied by the OEM, like a WD drive included in a Dell PC.

If you buy a bare drive from a store like Newegg, you'll get the full warranty provided by the MFR.  For WD drives, that means 3 years for most bare drives, and one year for most retail-boxed drives.
