Those Rebate Credit Cards[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#2)
by Anonymous User on Mon Feb 11, 2008 at 09:57:14 AM PDT

You can buy a PayPal or Amazon.com gift card in any amount (I think there may be a $2.00 minimum on Amazon). As soon as we get one of those gift cards, wether it be rebate or gift, I use it to buy an Amazon gift card for myself in the exact amount of the card. I can usually find something I need on Amazon at SOME point, and then I don't have to worry about loosing the card, ringing up fees for not using it, or having it expire. I just wish I had thought of this before my husband let a BellSouth rebate card die in his wallet.

Grocery Gift Certs work even better[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#3)

An even better idea is to pick up gift certificates from King Soopers, Safeway, or Albertsons. Or whatever other grocery store is in your area. You can get the exact amount in either certificates (coupons) or gift cards. And you know for sure you will be buying groceries before they expire.

Just say no[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#4)

Is it so hard to understand? This emperor is not wearing any clothes. Issuing a "rebate" is to attract customers in the way a sale does, while keeping most of the money.

The ONLY reason for a rebate is to avoid paying it. If they wanted to make good on the low price they would simply lower the price. The reason they pay a rebate fulfillment house a fat fee is because schemes to avoid making good on rebates save a ton of money over merely lowering the price the same amount.

The percentage range of rebates actually honored is a contract matter negotiated between the rebate issuer and the rebate fulfillment house. Can anyone doubt that rebate fulfillment houses have ample data to show, when they pitch a client a rebate deal, what percentage of buyers will fail to achieve the rebate?

Around here we just say no to rebates and stores who use them. We search out the web for the best price and buy it. It takes a lot less time than visiting a store, finding a clerk (when possible,) filing for rebates through a thicket of rules, keeping receipts and paperwork, and remembering to follow up when the check doesn't come.

Anyone screwed in a rebate deal has only himself to blame. No one forced you into it.

I never consider rebates when buying a product[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#7)
by Anonymous User on Thu Feb 14, 2008 at 08:44:58 PM PDT

I never look for a rebate when I am shopping for a product. I make purchases on the basis of what the product is going to cost me out of my own pocket today. Initially I will shop for the best price on the specific type of item. When I find a reliable supplier who has consistently-good prices, I tend to go back to them whenever I need that same type of product.

It's only fair to point out, however, that a few suppliers have very good rebate programs. Costco has what may be the best. The rebate coupon is automatically printed on the bottom of your receipt, even if you weren't aware that there was a rebate.

Generally, all that you have to do is fill in your name and address and mail the coupon to Costco's own rebate center. I've never had to do anything else, such as cut out a UPC bar code. You can also submit your rebate request at their online store, which is even better. My rebate checks have always arrived in a reasonable length of time, and they have been checks, not credit or gift cards.

Note, however, that if you are an executive member of Costco, once a year you get a rebate equal to two percent of your purchases. This is a rebate coupon, not a check, and can only be used toward purchases at Costco.
