I maintain a VMWare virtual machine specifically for running TaxCut. I use it just to file my taxes. The VM machine is Win2K (yes, valid license and all).

When not in use, I compress (bzip2) this VM and take it off my current workstation altogether. This way, I avoid anyone being able to access my tax data. So, while I noted their insecure behaviour, it simply doesn't matter to me. My methodology makes their inane selfish procedures moot. For everything else, I run Linux. I do, however, find TaxCut's charges for electronic filing to be a bit on the onerous side so I'm definitely going to look into TaxAct for next year. I wasn't aware of the existence of TaxAct. Thanks to those who mentioned it.
