My strategy for bonehead moves by companies (none / 0) (#2)
by Anonymous User on Mon Feb 18, 2008 at 11:52:55 AM PDT

The best way I've found to counter situations like this is to have 2 computers.  One computer is hooked up to the net, with nothing of real value stored on it.  The second computer is never connected to the net, and this is where I keep my sensitive data.

I use Taxcut, but am unaffected by their lack of care for my computer security.  I download any updates on the web-connected computer, then move it over to my standalone computer and enter my data.  When I'm finished, I print out my return on paper and mail it in.  While this strategy is more inconvenient then using a single computer, at least I can sleep at night knowing they (and who knows who else) do not have access to my data.

P.S. I was one of the people who move to Taxcut just before their product activation fiasco.  I was unhappy with the ads and other crap that was being installed on my computer along with the TurboTax product.  I had used quickbooks a few years before and that experience gave me an inside look at the lengths they would go to insure an continuous income stream.  I didn't like the way the company seemed to be heading and voted with my wallet.  I have no regrets. I encourage everyone else to do the same.
