I've had no other reports of people having trouble accessing the site, and the logs look normal. Perhaps the problem is on your end? -- Ed

  1. Yours was the only site affected.
  2. Name lookup and "Connecting to www.gripe2ed.com..." proceeded normally and quickly, but it would then hang at "Waiting for www.gripe2ed.com...". This indicated that my machine sent a SYN, your server sent an ACK, and mine sent HTTP GET /scoop/comments/2007/9/13/112615/16/post or whatever other URL, and then your server ignored it. A problem at my end would have caused either the SYN not to be sent or the ACK not to be received, so the transaction would not have gotten as far as it did. Given the evidence that the browser at my end was functioning normally, the indication is that all of my software was working, as was the operating system/TCP stack on your server, but your httpd was in doornail mode, albeit with the port still open as far as the OS was concerned.
  3. It's happened repeatedly now, and at all times nothing's abormal if I go to e.g. www.google.com.
  4. The successful initial TCP handshake indicates no problem with intervening routers either.

All the evidence points to a software fault at your end. Apparently it's not being logged, probably because nothing's actually crashing, just being extremely slow and intermittently nonresponsive. FWIW it's behaving normally right now; the problem seems to be intermittent on top of everything else.

Also remaining unaddressed: the format default indecisiveness and other indications of dubious change management.

...the server ignoring a goodly fraction of HTTP requests, that is. The TCP stack on the machine handshakes quickly enough, but the httpd ignores a fair proportion of the GETs it sees (though not the POSTs; I wonder why?) and links once again need from three to as many as ten clicks before they go anywhere. :P
