This comment is neither pro-AVG nor anti-Avast - it is just some info about AVG with dial-up. I had a client using dial-up who used AVG. It WAS necessary to change the AVG update configuration to work smoothly with this. Basically, I changed the update schedule to [When an Internet connection is available], with a recheck interval of 1 hour. (I am working from memory, so the wording may be a bit different.) With this change, AVG checked for updates hourly, downloading them when an Internet connection was active. It did not produce any pop-ups or other messages complaining about not being able to get updates. This client used the Internet often enough that this config change assured AVG was updated at least once a day.
