After seeing Norton Antivirus 2006, I have not been impressed. It seems to be a far more bloated program than 2003/2004/2005, and makes changes to the Windows GUI that I do not like. I'm no longer recommending it to the average user, I think Symantec needs to listen to the masses of technically inclined people who have requested a less bloated program, not more, something much closer to their Corporate edition product.

I used AVG for awhile, but found its automatic updates feature did not work well for several clients still using dialup Internet access. Then I found Avast! Antivirus Free edition. (http://www.avast.com). I have found that while AVG works, Avast! is a far more polished application.

One note: I recommend people install the Minimal option of the program. The only thing removed is support for skins (why would you need skins in an AV program) which actually makes the program far easier to use.
