Re: go AVG[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#12)

After seeing Norton Antivirus 2006, I have not been impressed. It seems to be a far more bloated program than 2003/2004/2005, and makes changes to the Windows GUI that I do not like. I'm no longer recommending it to the average user, I think Symantec needs to listen to the masses of technically inclined people who have requested a less bloated program, not more, something much closer to their Corporate edition product.

I used AVG for awhile, but found its automatic updates feature did not work well for several clients still using dialup Internet access. Then I found Avast! Antivirus Free edition. (http://www.avast.com). I have found that while AVG works, Avast! is a far more polished application.

One note: I recommend people install the Minimal option of the program. The only thing removed is support for skins (why would you need skins in an AV program) which actually makes the program far easier to use.

This comment is neither pro-AVG nor anti-Avast - it is just some info about AVG with dial-up. I had a client using dial-up who used AVG. It WAS necessary to change the AVG update configuration to work smoothly with this. Basically, I changed the update schedule to [When an Internet connection is available], with a recheck interval of 1 hour. (I am working from memory, so the wording may be a bit different.) With this change, AVG checked for updates hourly, downloading them when an Internet connection was active. It did not produce any pop-ups or other messages complaining about not being able to get updates. This client used the Internet often enough that this config change assured AVG was updated at least once a day.

I have clients using AVG and updating using dial-up and it's worked out of the box without any configuration changes. And it's so much faster than LiveUpdate!
