I think the point is that the contract doesn't kick in until the manufacturer's warranty expires thus giving you plenty of time to identify defects and pre-existing conditions for which the manufacturer is liable under its own warranty -- they don't want you to buy a broken device, wait one year, then try to get them to fix it. They do explicitly cover "normal wear and tear" -- so only the "cosmetic" exclusion would seem to be problematic. They only exclude cosmetics if it doesn't inhibit proper operation and performance. So they might have to fix a broken hinge on a cell phone (integral to the components) but not a broken cover hinge on a calculator that only serves to cover up the keypad and display.

So you're getting a bad deal (you knew that because all extended warranty offers are bad deals) but not that bad.
