The whole aspect of having to call someone to tell them I wanted to cancel in the first place is what irked me from the beginning. The entire process would actually take a few seconds if it were done with thru a listserv-like function, but no, I have to call someone and tell them why, in my own voice, their service is not for me. It doesn't make it a more difficult decision, it just makes the inevitable more stressful, and perhaps even begrudges me to never consider AOL again later on knowing that if I decide to cancel again I'd get such a hideous run-around and "but are you sure? I could give you an extension on your free trial days" blah blah whine blah. Shut up and cancel it, because I freakin' said so. Drop and give me 50 while you're at it.
