I'll try it and let you know[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#1)

Though you might not want to wait two months for the answer.

Here's what all Gripelog readers should do, though: every credit card offer includes a self-addressed, postage guaranteed envelope that they hope you'll send your application in. Fill it with all the junk you can find, get it up to at least 2 or 3 oz., and drop it in the mailbox.

Make sure you leave out anything that could be construed as your having agreed to or applied for anything. I do it all the time, knowing that one person doing it won't make much of a difference, but I urge others to do it as much as possible.

The envelopes for many of these offers are now barcodes to identify you before they even open the envelope.  I like to simply run the form thru the shredder and mail the little pieces back at thier cost.

Seems like the quantity of offers has gone down since I have started returning shredded forms. The envelope barcode identifies me and they get message I don't want thier offers.

I've been doing this too for a short while. I have seen a few envelopes with bar codes on the back. I just cut the code out and throw it away, add non-identifiable paper from the offer, and mail. I wish more people did this; might help the postal service's revenue, and keep the cost of stamps from rising.

I leave the barcode on the return envelope to let them know who is returning the shredded form.  It is a simple "no" response. This way I hope they stop sending me more junk.

Unsolicited Credit Card Offers[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#102)
by Anonymous User on Sun Aug 27, 2006 at 01:22:52 PM PDT

People talked about stuffing junk into the business reply envelope. Back before 9/11, I used to keep a supply of very thin sheet lead. I'd cut a piece to just fit inside the business reply envelope and drop it in the mail. That would be asking for lots of trouble now. What I have done sometimes recently is to tape 39 pennies onto a card, with a note thanking them for their attention and stating that I'm paying their postage to make sure they never send me another such mailing.

Don't know if this works[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#169)

A few years ago when I was still underage, i would recieve credit card offers. One day I got fed up, and called the phone number on the form. I spoke to the person, exaggerated and asked "Can I really have a credit card?!?!? I'm only 13!!" not only did the offers from the one company stop but all of them. I was curious how they got my information in the first place.

I like that idea of shredding it and sending it back to them. I get so tired of tearing them all up. I don't have a shredding machine, but, if the offers don't stop, guess I will have to get one. I had not given that a thought, but its a great idea. wichlet

reply envelope[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#10)
by Anonymous User on Tue Apr 12, 2005 at 11:24:17 AM PDT

For several years we have done this. We put everything back into the business-reply envelope, including the original envelope it came in. We write on whatever "pre-filled" form may have been included "Please remove this name from your mailing list" and make sure it's very visible to whoever opens the envelope.

We probably average about one "pre-approved" mailing per week, or less.

here's what they say[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#35)
by Anonymous User on Fri Jun 17, 2005 at 12:20:30 PM PDT

on the DMA website (opt-out prescreen probably has similar language):

This "do not mail" file is updated monthly and distributed four times a year -- January, April, July, and October (some mailers receive the file monthly). Your name remains on file for five years, after which time you may register again.

they have no interest in taking you off the list, so gee, 4 times a year, that's fair right? wow thanks guys.

Lets Act Now - stop this solicitation terrorism[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#53)

I agree.. lets return the favor. But why should it waste our time and our natural resources and energy. Better still it's time there were serious law suits against the federal govt and against some of these agencies. It's the only real way to stop this senseless waste of resources and energy and protect our privacy at the same time (and it should apply to businesses as well as persons). Please pass the intent of this message on and Lets Act Now.

I agree totally! We need to stop this crap and protect ourselves. The meaning of the word "privacy" has gone out the window. I'm sick and tired of getting pre-approved junk mail. If a person has had financial difficulty in the past and has learned from it (not everyone who has had money problems did so willingly; loss of job or illness has brought on late payments, etc.) and now trying to get on the right path again is even more difficult because of all the scammers out there! Who can we trust now?

Credit Card Junk Mail[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#444)
by Anonymous User on Tue Oct 16, 2007 at 12:23:39 PM PDT

it takes the same time to open and throw away the junk as it would to seal and send back an empty pre-paid envelope - I stuff the envelope with paper and send it back making them pay for postage and the help to open it - if everyone did this it would cost them approximately $150 per person per year - mulitple by 1 million - and see if they still send them!
