Poor taste[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#1)

I was handed one of those at the Boston Linuxworld Expo, and while I thought it was cute at first, I really think it was in poor taste. My colleague didn't realize what it was until later that evening when he was going through his bag of goodies at home surrounded by his family. It frankly looked like a box of mints. The company was from Romania, so I can see them wanting to make a splash. However, they would have done themselves a favor to think about the ramifications of coming into a foreign culture with something that could offend potential customers.

I'm sure the relatives are going to be real shocked to find out that sometimes consenting adults actually have sex and use contraception. Oh my! How scandalous! American culture and a number of others all need to get their heads screwed on straight and quit taking any reminder of the basic facts of human reproductive biology as a reason to completely freak out. Practical, levelheader, and not taking stuff too seriously -- that's the way to have a civilized people. Otherwise, your society will be unstable against various kinds of fanaticism, restrictions on expression, and "capture" by special interests.

unfortunately, our society is in the process of being hijacked by those who believe that only their opinion counts, and we are returning to the 1650s where dissent is blasphemy and unique opinions are grounds for persecution, prosecution, and death by torture. We are not there yet, but the momentum is clear
