Still mad[ Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#1)
by Mason on Tue Aug 10, 2004 at 10:03:58 AM PDT

I was going to write y'all about the Doom 3 copy protection, and decided to hold off because I was so mad that the best I would have done was a profanity-laden rant.

I bought it, ran into the "emulation software" error, and just about flipped out of my mind.  Turned out that Doom was searching for installations of CloneCD.  My version is so old (3.0.9.1) that it doesn't do any emulation, probably wouldn't beat any modern copy protection, didn't have any services running, and was solely used for a few personal cd backups.  I actually had to uninstall CloneCD to even be able to run Doom3.

Meanwhile, friends of mine downloaded and were playing days before I bought it -- totally hassle-free.  Why bother anymore?  Why should paying customers be the ones who get screwed?

The hell with them -- they lost a paying customer.  I'm sick of it.

My Brother-in-law had the same problem, except he didn't even have the CloneCD installed! He had deleted the program long ago, but the Doom 3 installer had found the registry entry since he hadn't bothered to use the add/remove Utility.

It's starting to sound as though the only Program Doom 3 has a problem with is CloneCD. Many people are reporting Doom 3 working just peachy (using Emulation no less) with alcohol 120% and Daemon-tools. Perhaps Activision has a vendetta against SlySoft.

Copy Protection Mayhem[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#7)
by Anonymous User on Tue Aug 17, 2004 at 02:08:30 PM PDT

I want to gripe about some experiences I've had with various game software that I've purchased over the last few months. I have two pieces of software that I use for backing up cd's and mounting ISO's on a virtual dvd/cd-rom (Clone CD and Daemon Tools) so I don't have swap cd's all the time. I'm an admitted gaming addict so I purchase 30+ games a year. A few months back I purchased the action game FarCry and installed it but whenever I tried to play my computer froze before the game would start (seemingly during the copy protection cd check). There was no error message or warning as to what the problem was..just a cold hard freeze and the accompanying 5 minute wait through Scandisk each time it froze. After some research I found that some gaming software now comes with copy protection that wont let it run if it detects certain software on the users computer. On a hunch I thought that maybe the copy protection was taking more extreme liberties in my case and causing my computer to crash/freeze. So I downloaded a no-cd patch just to see if the software I paid good money for was refusing to run out of principle. The game ran fine with the no-cd patch. Imagine my displeasure with having to crack a game that I bought and paid for. My adventures continued when I purchased the games Painkiller, and Doom3 and had to go through the same exact procedure to get them to run. However, I am unable to play any of these games online because they are now cracked (or whatever you call it). Doom3 mutiplayer was something I was really looking forward to playing online so I relented and uninstalled the Clone CD and Daemon Tools software in an attempt to get Doom3 to work with the store bought executable. To add insult to injury, Windows XP decided that I had made a hardware change when I uninstalled the virtual dvd/cd-rom software and told me I had to re-activate. When I tried to re-activate it told me I had re-activated too many times. I upgrade my computer every couple of months with one piece of hardware or another so I'm also an example of how flawed their activation system being tied to hardware (or in this case virtual hardware) is. So then I had to call Microsoft and convince them I wasn't trying to install Windows XP on more than one computer so that I could use the operating system I bought and paid for over two years ago. As a Software Engineer myself, I understand the need to protect your code but to make copy protection so stringent that legitimate users can't use the software they paid for encourages piracy or at the very least discourages future purchases. Furious....$*#&@($%

you dont have to remove cloncd[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#10)

WARNING the following advice may cause damage to your windows system either read up a bit and know what your doing or dont do the following at all dont blame gripe2ed.com either cus they didnt write this. having said that its pretty easy to do this just make sure you make a back up first. it does work for me but dont blame meif you get it wrong. EDIT before you do this make a restore point. in xp goto to help and support in startmenu and look for restore on the help homepage ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' if you want to play doom with cloncd still installed then make a back up of [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Elaborate Bytes] and [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Elaborate Bytes] you do this selecting the keys folders ie "elaborate bytes" and going to the file menu and choosing export call them clone1 and clone2 or what ever you like and save them to the desktop (open the file for editing by rightclicking on the file and choosing edit this will open notepad) youll have two reg files you can either merge the two by cutting and pasting but leaving out the second "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00" line. (just paste the contents of clone2 on the end of clone1) and save the file as "addcloncdback.reg" or keep them separate eithers fine merging them just makes it a bit more effecient open a new text file in notepad and add the following #####start######dont include this line Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Elaborate Bytes] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Elaborate Bytes] #####end######dont include this line note the '-' before HKEY this will delete the reg key. just save it as "deleteclone.reg" including ""in notepad save as box otherwise youll get a file called deleteclone.reg.txt . when you need to play doom3 stop clonecd in the tray by right clicking/exit ( you may have to disable virtual drive separatly just right click on the task bar and goto to virtual drive and select disable from the dropdown box but i think jsut closing the task tray clonce icon will do that) and then double click deleteclone.reg to remove the registry entries after that doom3 runs without any hastle. and when you you need to use any elaborate bytes software double click either addcloncdback.reg or clone1.reg and clone2.reg or whatever you saved them as when you backed them up. it worked for me just make sure you back up keys by exporting them otherwise you may have to reinstall clonced if you lucky. omoora
