an old saw, but not really correct[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#2)

I know the line about "I installed AV product X and it found viruses product Y had missed" is a classic, but it's not really a good reason to pick one over the other or justify a switch. Different programs will always detect viruses differently, and their displays of viruses found aren't always reliable. (Was it really a virus, or just a file already disinfected by the previous program? The end user can't tell.) You can't compare on small numbers alone. Besides, if you do play the numbers game, Grisoft's AVG does worse in a lot of professional AV testing than Norton. I like AVG, and I use it, but it's not necessarily better than Norton just because it says it found traces of a couple more viruses. It's better for a hole host of other reasons. And add my voice to those who've had problems with Norton. I gave up on them after having rebate and subscription date problems. Then over the last few months 4 of my friends and relatives have come to me for help with Norton 2004 installs gone awry. That program AND the company took a nose dive in reliability.

I also like the specious logic people often use in support whatever AV they've chosen:

Them: Get So-And-So AV.  It's great.

Me: Oh, yeah?  I've never heard of it.

Them: I've had it for months and I've had no problems.

Me: Hmmm.  I've been wearing this new cologne for the last few months and I haven't been attacked by any bears so it must be an effective bear repellent.
