Don't exempt games[ Parent | Reply to This ] (none / 0) (#5)

I have yet to see a computer implementation of Risk or Clue that actually follows the rules printed for decades in the rule books of those board games. For true fans of these games the differences are not trivial. With all the work that went into the AI of the various versions of these games the developers failed to actually make the programs work according to the specs (in this case the published rules). I have often tried to get games to work and they have failed or the documentation is for a far different or better product than the one they are selling but not supporting.

I made an exception for games because a game's task is to entertain the player. I wouldn't warranty this "task". There is also numerous reviews available on the net. These helps checking if a product keeps up with previous ones and keep their promises. Master of Orion comes to mind in the under reputation product. I'd still keep the function warranty.

This gives us another interresting aspect of "satisfaction or your money back" warranty. Software which are oriented toward psychological or intellectual goals can be long to evaluate and can fail with a specific user. Good examples are the numerous "learn ... with ..." products. Having some knowledge in teaching, I can tell you the quality vary from junk to marvellous but, even with marvellous products, failure happen.

It remind me of the legal difference between the obligation of delivering result and doing the best possible job. A physician is obligated to do the best possible job to heal you while the carpenter must deliver a specific result.
